I live in rural Arkansas. When I moved here everyone on my street had those and a police scanner on the porch. They got a 30 pack of beer and enjoyed the action every night. I used to drink whiskey and watch the people doing this.

police scanner + bug zapper + beer = a damn good night

That's so funny. That's the same thing I got my dad to do to his bug zapper like 30 years ago. The next morning there was a huge pile of dead bugs and a bird underneath it.

made sense to me. more open, more killing, more better

Alot easier to clean when the bugs explode. No bodies laying inside. The bigger the pop, the less parts land in the bottom.

These bug zappers are the reason we have so many mosquitoes as the zappers mostly kill beneficial insects many of which are predators of mosquitoes.

I'm working on a SEARS bugwacker, 1acre I think, rated that is 5500V 9MA. I was changing to use a screw in bulb socket and accidentally drilled into the primary coil winding. Not rewinding anytime soon.

The new bug zappers use a voltage Tripler with diode's and capacitors, but the old bug zappers used a good old iron core transformer that fed a steady current and voltage to sustain that sizzling arc that we all crave to hear.

A giant moth frying on one of these things is KZfaq material. I have one of the vintage zappers it's a flowtron from the late 70s and works well. If I had a similar modern unit I'd cut out all the grating and let the bugs fly in and FRY.

Damn. That's not a bad idea. I do have a bunch of bats around already. Birds eat a bunch too. Good idea... What's a bat house
@GermanToolReviews7 жыл бұрын
Just a box where bat's can roost during the day. You can find them on Amazon or most pet stores. Might take a year or two to get bats to settle in them.
@MikesToolShed7 жыл бұрын
pretty sure I need that. bats are cool even if they don't eat bugs

I have about 3 bats that fly in my backyard every evening. The lazy bums don't work in the day though. As many bugs as bats may eat I still have loads more. I'm just in a prime location for them in the woods.

A higher voltage capacitor will still only charge to the output voltage of the charging circuit/transformer.... a higher capacity capacitor won't arc further, but it'll arc bigger.

A giant moth stuck in one? I can top that. My buddy had a possum fry in one. Not intentionally (so he says). I guess the thing tried climbing down it. But when it got zapped, one of its fingers got stuck in the wire mesh and kinda laid/hung across the rest of the unit until my pal wondered what was burning.

My flowTron is about 14 inches tall, midsize I guess, within a week here in Pennsylvania, the light was almost blocked out because the dead mosquitoes were about half an inch thick.I have a small stream about 75 feet from my house running through my property. I had no idea there were that many’mosquitoes . I hang that light up down by the stream in March, I change the attractant in July with some fresh attractant, and I don’t bring it until the first frost in mid November. I don’t know what I like the sound of better, a sizzling steak, or a sizzling mosquito. Just in 2018 and new insect showed up here in Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh. I believe they’re called can’t see ems..Does anybody know of a bug zapper that would take care of them? They show up in May and they’re pretty much gone by the end of June. And they seem to only come out in the evening after 5 PM.

Ethan Devlin lots of tiny mosquito looking bugs. they don't bite. but they can get in your nose and all over you. annoying as hell if they get inside too
@1pcfred7 жыл бұрын
I have the biting variety of bugs here. I just had to check my tick bite I got the other day, No bulls eye so maybe I'm safe? I plan on getting 3 more 20 pound bags of insecticide to spread over the property soon. My spring time application is wearing off. I'll tell you what to do to someone if you don't like them. Get some Japanese beetle traps and put them on their property. I made that mistake one year. I swear every beetle in the county was in my yard! It took years to wipe them all out.

I was thinking the same thing, that small insects don't get zapped. A REAL mod would come up with a finer grid to close the gap.
@kennek62242 жыл бұрын
they cut the power back in newer ones / the old ones higher voltage the wider the electric field small bug gets zapped new zappers same spacing but reduceded juice smaller field / got to increase the transformer hope it up
@minecraftster506 жыл бұрын
If you want to test the voltage go get a electric fence tester from a farm store with voltage readout it has 6 or 7 neon lamps that each light up displaying the voltage

Save someone some real pain: Discharge capacitor before touching kill cage. Doesn’t matter if it’s been unplugged for some time. Great video: but maybe add warning text at start. I think you can add annotation from KZfaq without editing and reuploading. I connect my positive and negative prong on power cord with an insulated screwdriver to discharge, but not sure if this is theproper method or works universally.

Being facetious to convey the amount of electricity I want to pulse through the exploding bodies of the insects I hate. A fuck load. Hey if it cost me an extra 5 bucks a month a have a tesla coil that can kill seagulls I'd do it

Mike's Tool Shed so when you wake up to a pile of dead bugs and birds under the zapper you know you've done a good job!

I would be surprised if it is not a step up transformer. Something like a furnace ignition coil? They're a lot of fun. Amaze your friends! But to measure the voltage in something like that you could feed it a lower input voltage, then measure that, and extrapolate the difference. Because transformers are linear. That's how I figure out unknown transformers. I also put a bulb in series to limit the current. If the bulb really lights up there's something wrong. I love a good visual indicator. But it might have some kind of a janky switch mode PSU in it? Lots of things do today. Then figuring out the output voltage may be more complicated. You need to check out flyback experiments. There's shitloads of nuts on KZfaq that do those. You could make that zapper zap even when no bugs are landing on it. Here's a spark playing music. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gdmTqMZ9tNzanY0.html

I used to have a 10kv neon xfmr and I have a 3kv ignitor for a jet heater. love playing with that kind of shit. I watch tons of videos of basement scientists with their variac xfmrs and oscilloscopes and wish I knew electrons like they did. only one way to learn... soup up a bug zapper. I just have to do some research. after I filmed this is was thinking there has to be a low amp, high volt transformer to feed that cap to get the zap (title for next video) so im gonna see if I can get my hands on another neon transformer and learn some science in an attempt to kill bugs.

Yeah the Intertubes is chock full of great info about high voltage electronics. I messed with it once myself years before I got online. Like you I enjoy seeing what others are up to making high voltage apparatus today. Someday I am going to have to build a Tesla coil I suppose? But back in the day I did what I did with common items. I made an oscillator with a 555 timer IC that I drove a MOSFET with, then I put that pulsed DC through a step up transformer, which fed a ladder voltage multiplier, that drove a car ignition coil. I powered the whole thing with a 9V battery and it would bridge a one inch spark gap. Which I thought was pretty good for just being powered by a little battery. Most of what I see today is flyback transformers out of CRTs. I think people make tuned tank circuits with those? Which when done right yields rather impressive results.
