Here are some of the highlights and key takeaways from my first guitar kit build ever. I went with StewMac because my research indicated that their kits were the best, and included the best instruction. I found the guitar kit to be of very good quality, and the instructions were clear, even for a beginner. The support that I got from StewMac was also superb.
In the video I also talk about the specialty guitar building tools that I bought and used on the build, and I'll also tell you about the major goof that I made and how you can avoid it. You'll get to hear my brother Peter Mayer (www.petermayer.net), professional musician, play the guitar at the end.
The products that I used on this build include:
Fret Hammer amzn.to/399gteZ
Fret file amzn.to/3orVslY
fret board sanding block amzn.to/2LfCpNx
Nut Files amzn.to/3oq8OPV
Transtint Dye amzn.to/2MKGo56
StewMac Les Paul Kit www.stewmac.com/kits-and-proj...
Soldering iron amzn.to/2Lz2mr4
Video equipment used:
Canon Rebel 7i DSLR amzn.to/3pKXxuV
Camera mounted mic: amzn.to/36CZZLl
Studio Mic: amzn.to/3epZIiR

Yeah, I definitely avoided kits in the $100 range. They are out there but the reviews are horrible. This kit is good quality with clear controls instructions and great tech support for new builders like me. This is a nice guitar and a great way to go if you want the experience of assembling a guitar. It’s probably not going to save you much money, especially on a first build.

I put this guitar together as you have shown .Using a Bargain Musician kit turned out wonderfully thanks for the inspiration. Swapped out the tuners for Vintage Gibson tuners ( already had them.) For pickups I found Epiphone Pro Buckers online with wiring ( less than $60.00 online). Rivals my Custom and is better sounding than most of my Les Pauls for about $ 250.00 strings included.

What an amazing job. I think I’d rather a kit guitar done by you then but a factory made one. I love the detail and care you put into it. Would you consider ?
@ToolMetrix
@ToolMetrix 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, thanks! I'm honored that you would say that. What I've heard is that, if you do a good job building one of these $250 kit guitars, that they are approximately comparable to a guitar that you would buy complete for $300. If you compared the finish and the wiring of mine to a factory made guitar, the factor made one would be considerable better. With the hours that I put into this one, it would cost enough to where you could buy a guitar that was WAY better, including better electronic components, for less money. I'd encourage you to try your hand at building one from a kit. It was a great learning experience for me. I really appreciate the kind words and the interest, Ben. Cheers, Paul

From a fellow woodworker, beautiful guitar and nice job! I love Les Paul style guitars and will probably build one from a kit someday as you did. I noticed you left off the truss rod cover. If you didn't receive one with the kit, they're cheap. Consider getting a blank and an extra to practice on, personalizing it with your name, business logo or something artistic using your Dremel tool and cutting through the black top laminate to just touch the white underneath. A nice way to add a unique finishing detail to your guitar.

Beautiful guitar! I'm looking into doing a similar build, and have a few questions about the finish you used. First, the wipe on poly- is it clear or warm, and satin or gloss? does the sheen matter for the wipe on layer? Secondly, for the spray, is it a polyurethane or lacquer, and is it clear or warm finish? I haven't done much of these types of finishes before. Thanks for any info you can give, and for creating this great video!
@ToolMetrix
@ToolMetrix 3 ай бұрын
Thanks 🙏. As far as finishing, I used polyurethane and you can find clear (usually water based) or amber (usually oil based), and satin or gloss in both options. Lacquer is probably a good option for this project as well (perhaps even better) but I don’t have experience with it so I can’t really advise.

Hi Vadim, yeah, it’s definitely good to know. The veneer isn’t a problem as long as you’re careful with your sanding. The body is actually made of mahogany which is a great wood for this. A solid piece of guitar-quality flame maple, machined with LP pattern, would probably cost more than this whole kit. Just guessing.

Nice build, and thanks for posting! I’m contemplating building my own Gibson Les Paul (even going as far as putting a Gibson logo on the headstock!) For two reasons: 1. I cannot afford to pay what Gibson is asking for a Les Paul. 2. Given Gibson‘s shoddy quality in the last 20 or so years I want one that’s built right! For the price of a real Gibson Les Paul the way I figure is with these premade kits I could probably build around five of my own. To hell with Gibson!

Hi Wade, That's a bummer. In my case I had cooked some electronics with my soldering iron that was too hot. It's hard to say, but my hunch is like yours; probably a grounding problem. You goofed again. Always tin the tip of your soldering iron (coat it in solder). This keeps it from oxidizing and allow the tip to heat up much more quickly, plus it keeps oxidized metal from mixing into the solder when working, giving you cold solder joints.

Buy a Chinese kit from AliExpress, they're cheaper and the body is the right shape.

Hi Frogmella, Thanks for your suggestion! I had a great experience with this kit, and in working with the customer service team at StewMac. I would definitely buy from them again, but others might want to try Ali.

Thanks for watching and sharing your input. SM calls the veneer layer "Highly Flamed Maple" which is just a different name for the curly maple. Do you think it is actually something else? Or do you just refer to call it flame maple?

Sounds like Stewmac is selling kits that require you to buy a bunch of their tools. Hmmmm...

You do need a modest set of tools but I didn’t have to buy any of them from StewMac.

Why would you want to build an instrument you don’t play?

Because they are a beautiful, interesting project. There are lots of guitar makers who don’t play.

Sorry, I don't recall. It seemed like a great value at the time, though. The products that I used are listed in the video description. Thanks for watching!
