I have had a set of Def Tech Towers for about ten years and have loved them. They do need experimenting with placement and may be too imposing for your living room. Mine have 12 inch built in powered subwoofers and have more than enough bass. Forget about using them in an apartment or Condo. I am assuming that in ten years Def tech has made improvements so they are probably incredible. I am wondering if you have tried Golden Ear towers and if so, how do you think the Def Techs compare to the Golden Ears? The Def Techs are not cheap but I have found on occasion around the holidays they have gone on sale for a good discount after they have been on the market a few years. No you are not crazy for comparing these to much more expensive speakers. I paid about $4000.00 for mine 10 years ago and that is not cheap by any measure but I have had my Def Tech towers for about 10 years and I would be hard pressed to find as enjoyable a pair of speakers for anywhere near their price.

I think it would be an interesting video. I know in this particular review you mention things being tweaked 2 or 3 diffferent ways and I have no idea what all that REALLY means, especially in real world listening. I have never used room treatments or any other DSP items. Makes me very curious how my bi polar Mirage 1295is would/ could sound.

Just had to say how enjoyable and fun your reviews are and lately you are breaking new ground in humor .Kristi has really upped her game lately and is a a great finisher for all the reviews. You are one lucky man to have someone who actually cares about audio/video with the same passion as you do and she's funny as hell. Thanks for never caving into the temptations of taking the money and running. You are appreciated in so many ways.

@@dalstar925 I’m happy just that I have some understanding/tolerance of the purchases. Wifey doesn’t “get” our Klipsch Forte bedroom speakers but tolerates them and their amplifier nightlight 😆 and she helped audition our Focal Kanta 2s and raved about them. Wasn’t thrilled at the price but hey, who would be. Likes to say “there’s a holiday in NYC sitting there” and I have to correct her and say, more like a holiday in Tokyo 😬

I commented a week ago asking for this review and I spent this whole review smiling listening to you talk about what I love about these, I’m 18 years old and grew up around my dads super towers and they’re what got me into hifi, and now a pair of BP 8060 supertowers sit in my bedroom flanking my TV with a 12 inch home made sub with an svs driver in it, as one of my favorite hifi KZfaqrs that I’ve been watching since I was about 15-16 years old, thank you for this review I loved it and it reminded me why I got into the hobby

I’m happy you opened the door to the Wilson comparison. Audio is a subjective experience and you relating your experience is valid. Many audiophiles are very signal path obsessed and have bought into the pure path idea. That also aligns with triode or pure class A amps, high end cables and power supplies. That, combined with a great source and recording can produce a great experience. But I have to agree that the new world of class D power, DSP, room correction, etc. can also produce quite a thrill. Isn’t that what this hobby is all about?

I've been waiting for a review of Def Techs! Loved the video! If I ever build a home theatre, I might start with the DM60s. My first "hi -end" speakers were Def Tech Mythos ST-L Super Towers. Those speakers really did make me become an "audiophile". I could hear a huge difference from anything I'd ever owned. I eventually upgraded to Sonus Faber Olympica Nova 2, but I couldn't part with the Def Tech Mythos so I gave them to my dad to "borrow".

I am really happy to see this review for a brand I fell in love with in 1994. I had fantastic auditions with the BP 30 or their 9040 series and was very close to buying them had I not accidentally found Mirage 1295is bipolar speakers, which 25+ years later are still my main listening speakers. Your thoughts on the tweeter are very valid, as it was the shrillness at higher volumes (a thing I still love to do) that directed me to get the Mirages instead. Nice to hear Def Tech is still gettin it done!

I've really been looking forward to this review. I own the BP 9060s and distinctly remember the first time hearing the Def Tech super towers and the lasting impression they made. I 100% agree that positioning and setup is crucial and still have not mastered it in my current space. Your review reinforces how imperative (and painstaking) it is but also that the payoff is worth it. An excellent, transparent and spot on review. Well done 👏

Also used 9060s in a typical living room, and they definitely took up space, but for how the room worked (rental, so wasn't doing anything to the room) but they ROCKED and still felt good spatially and sounded amazing. Add not needing separate subs or atmos speakers that look awful, it's a great space budget

I recall when Definitive Technology came around in the 90's and for the money then they had our senses peeked and the wallet happy enough to purchase a pair of the BP10's. Loved everything about the experience in the showroom and then struggled with placement and room size. Having to take a second mortgage, defeating their value, to build a new Room just for the speakers was not on any radar. or warranted.. But dang that soundstage stage and impact on the low end.

This was an exciting review for me because I own Definitive Technology's other BP 9040 tower speakers as well as their CS 9060, SR 9040 and A90 Atmos modules which are altogether fantastic for both music and films. I've never concerned myself with speaker styling, to me it's just a speaker, my only concern is how it sounds, but that's just me. It's nice to see Definitive Technology getting some attention.

Great review ... thank you! I worked for Klipsch in 1988-1989 building KG-4, Heresy, Forte, Cornwall, and Chorus speakers before joining the US Navy. In 1993, while stationed in Maryland, I walked into a stereo shop in Germantown, MD to buy a set of Klipsch Fortes; however, the salesman asked if I had ever heard of a new Maryland-based company called Definitive Technology. I chuckled a bit and said, "Uh...No! Where are your Klipsch speakers?" So, he took me into a listening room to hear the Forte. Sitting right next to them were Def Tech BP-20's. Today, after 30-years of being packed literally around the world with me and sustaining "drunken sailor" abuse few speakers on the planet could have withstood, those same BP-20's are sitting in my living room ... and they still sound freaking AMAZING! But, it's time to upgrade, and though I am a Klipsch disciple ... I'm going to pass on the RP-8000F. I'm going back to the DEF TECH well for the second time since 1993.

I think there will be a ton of people really interested in these speakers. But they will be put off because of potentially needing to place them out from the wall and the black fabric aesthetics. Completely completely agree on adding some other fabric choices. Impressed that they impressed both of you since you have heard so many other products. Thanks.

I loved the pictures of the different fabric-- what a difference. I think it showed Def Tech how important it is to dress a speaker properly and size it properly. If someone is spending $5,000, then they have to spend at least $1,000 on the appearance of the speaker because it will make it more appealing and drive up their sales.

Yaaaaaaay Def Techs. I am so elated that you two fell in love with their beleivable soundstage as have I. My units are the pre-historic originals: (BP10S X 4 & BP8S X 2 & CLR2002): BP10s had the 6.5 in woofs & BP8s and CLR2002 both had the smaller 5.75 in woofs I wonder how the performance has been improved since 1990, short of the obvious added powered-subwoofer per tower? I bought their SuperCube2 (8in x 3) subwoofer at that period... and it hits solid 20bB in my room. You are RIGHT about DefTech towers being finicky BUT they are a tweekers wet dream. Mine are optimal at 20in away from the back walls and 3 to 4 ft from the left or right walls. Their sound is infinitely augmented with the equally tweekable Yama A2080 AVR. I tweek them all at least once a month like a NUT. 😊😂 Q: IS THERE ANYTHING ABOUT THESE NEW 5.25IN WOOF TOWERS THAT BEGS UPGRADING (outside built-in subs addition)? God Bless and keep you BOTH ❤🎉🙏

We need more of Kristi unfiltered, guys - her response to the Wilson resemblance to an ATM is priceless. I rarely laugh at review vids but that was spontaneous as it gets - I wish you hadn't bleeped it out. As for her fear that the Def Tech speakers would be 'bangers', that's a compliment in many musical genres, esp EDM, but I agree that these dominate your room. Congrats Andrew and Kristi on another great speaker review. I applaud you on these speaker reviews in the $3K to $5K price range as today that area offers tremendous bang for the buck and is reasonably attainable for the average audiophile. Curious if you've ever approached Aperion Audio to review their Verus III Concert V8T tower speaker. Based on only a few reviews I've read, they appear to offer tremendous performance and build quality far beyond their $4K price. Aperion may be one of those under the radar direct to consumer audio brands that punches well above its price. Thanks.

Almost brought a pr some years ago to replace my Forte lls but did like the high end in the Def Techs also did want to fool with Keeping the cover on them clean. When you had yours was it a problem? And yes you can compare a $5.000 pr of speakers to a set of speakers that cost more that some people's HOMES! A lot of times those ultra high dollar speakers are just to flat and Boring 😴. Nothing against the High end. But you got to put some soul in them. In order to touch the persons soul. Keep up the great work your doing👍

Thanks for the video, I have the older BP 60s and I thought they were pretty great… I do have my close to the wall though probably less than a foot as the room isn’t very big. To me, they sound fine, but I really don’t know much about room placement, or managing the bass levels between them, and the subwoofer. Do you think it’s some point you could do a video about room placement? I wouldn’t even really know where to begin to find out what sounds better.

I was glad to hear you did a review the Def tech newest speaker. I have had 8000 series for years and wanted the 9000 when they went on sale. I missed the sales. Only thing I didn't like about my def techs was that sock. I did a upgraded and gave my son my old Def tech 8040 bp's. and went with the KEF 750's which is the right size for my man cave. Although I like your review it came two months late. Not your fault no else had them in their store or was waiting on Def tech to send them. Great review.

Bipolar speaker design and built in powered subwoofers were two of the gems that the legendary Sandy Gross brought to market starting in the early 90's. My favorite Definitive technology speaker is the Mythos ST-L towers (not bipolar, but powered subs built-in). The Mythos line attempted to fusion Home Theater and two channel into an aesthetically appealing speakers. Sandy Gross co-founder of Polk Audio, founder of Deftech, and later Goldenear was the king of delivering us world class sonics at great price value. That is truly the american way.

The Mythos ST-L towers are still my everyday go to speakers in my main system driven by Anthem STR amp. I've been to the AXPONA Audio show in Chicago and there are ultra-uber-high end systems that blew me away, but I always felt that my humble home system is not embarrassed by them at all. Lastly, most of these show systems are way too large for a normal home space. Happy listening!

I purchased the BP model before these, and no, I don't think you're crazy comparing them to crazy expensive speakers. Listening at my dealer, I compared the Def Tech's I ended up purchasing to a 50k system from Paradigm, and, these held their own, and may have been even better in ways. In fact, I thought I was crazy at the time thinking these were that good, for 1/10 of the cost. Everything Sandy Gross has started on his own, Def Tech, Golden Ear, have all made incredible reference products, for a value cost. 5k for these, 10k for the T-Ref Golden Ear Triton, they're incredible speakers at any price point that I think can take on speakers costing multiple, dozens, even hundreds times more. Great Review!

My room is similar in size, and went with a pair of stand mounts and the 10" Rel HT1003. We sit about 8 ft from the speakers, and I absolutely love it. ...even in our upstairs living room, where the space is 24 x 20 ft with an 18' ceiling and it's open to the kitchen, we have standmounts and a sub, and it fills the space all they way into the kitchen. But we don't listen to anything at screaming loud volume...

@@juliobello4561 I've had many subwoofers throughout my lifetime but it was only when I tried a rel subwoofer with their high level connection is when I realised what a full range sound is supposed to sound like. I have both speakers you mention! I 100% agree with Andrew and Kristi - the Def Tech speakers, once you get them placed correctly, are some of the most fun speakers I've ever listened to. I have the Triton Reference speakers now - they're more precise in their soundstage and imaging than the def techs, but "more clinical" and accurate. Everything musically on the Def Techs sounds great - but with the Triton's, you start to hear artists so clearly, that they don't quite sound as good as you remember them to be. Both are great speakers, both require a lot of toying around with positioning, both don't require a lot of power to make them sound great, or play VERY loud. And, II really do believe you can compare those two brands to just about anything else out there, and come away as impressed with either brand over speakers costing far, far more.

Great review. I owned the Def Tech BP30s for many years and had similar thoughts. I loved the lively and enveloping sound initially, but as time went on I found the treble to be too grating and even ended up putting foam panels behind the speakers to tame the reflective sound from the rear facing speakers. I feel like they need to improve their tweeters before I consider going back. You should need room correction for 2 channel music

When set to large the built in subs sounded very muddy but when set to small at 40Hz the bass tightened right up. So my mains give me great bass i can hear while the SVS PB3000 and SVS NSD 12/2 give me great bass i can feel. Same initial designer (Sandy Gross) so similar. The GoldenEar product, now owned by Audioquest as I understand it, uses an AMT tweeter, so in this case I think it would be better up top compared to the DefTech here. Midrange might be equal and bass that too could be a bit of a tie. The GoldenEar speakers to my knowledge do not have a rear-firing driver array so placement may also be just a little more flexible with the GoldenEar.
