How to grow tomatillos. Tomatillos come in green and purple, either one is fine for us salsas. They are easy to grow, but they act like a determinate tomato plant, they grow flowers and grow fruit all at one time, and when the fruit sets usually the plant is done. I grow my tomatillos in containers, so they do good in raised beds or container gardening. They do not like to dry out, so I usually have them in a container that is layered with other pots, or a two system set up so they always have access to water. I compost in place making free plant food from kitchen scraps and leftovers and browning leaves as the plants grow, as win win perfect vegetable Garden.

Tomatillos take a while before they produce that fruit...I think it's the same everywhere. Another good lesson, Robbie.👍

I had tomatilloes come up in my flower bed last year. I had no idea what they were. I took a picture of them and looked them up. When I learned the birds love them I transplanted them in a bucket. I had loads of them come up in my flower bed this year. I pulled them all out.

In 2020 I grew a tomatillo from seeds (from someone’s old bush. It did well). The next year it came out by itself (self seeding) but later died for no reason probably the summer was too hot and did not get enough water. I buried the only little fruit and crossed my fingers. This time around I am attentive to its water need. It’s been doing well and now loaded with fruits. Like you say, T prefers fall season (9b). The seedling I have emerged in late summer. First slowly until now it is growing and growing!

I love pickled Tomatillos. 🥰I do not grow them but our local Mexican grocery and produce store sells Pickled Tomatillos. Yummy😋I want to try growing them come springtime. My husband was born and raised in So Cal . And his mama grew these all the time and pickled them and made salsa with them. My mother in law said they were easy to grow. like you said they drop on the ground take seed. They are a pretty plant.

We've discovered we really like tomatillos and grew a lot this summer. Here in N. CA they fruit and yield from July on. But Sept/Oct. is peak. I judge them ripe when the wrapper is tight around the fruit. They also keep a really long time if kept in their paper-like wrapper. It dries and shrinks around the fruit like a wrapper! When I get enough I put them in blender, pour out the puree (sometimes with added spices) on non stick dryer sheets and dehydrate. The result is a dried "green salsa" powder very easy to reconstitute. LOVE em. Great idea to pickle them. I will try that.

Thanks Robbie i will be picking up some tomatillo seeds for sure. Hey Robbie i make these Refrigerator Zucchini pickles. I just put the firmer zucchini in 8 ounce half pint jar,s.Add white vinegar ,kosher salt, dill and garlic, mustard seeds and peppercorns. they last a few weeks in the fridge. if they last that long ? so good. Since there not canned or heat processed you dont need canning lids. I use reusable plastic lids. slice your zucchini into rounds. Make the brine, combine vinegar & spices with a small saucepan, then heat the saucepan until the salt dissolves. you dont boil. Take the brine off the heat and pour into the jar over the zucchini slices. Then put the lid on the jar and let it cool to room temperture on the counter.Once it is cooled put the jar in the fridge & let it rest for one day to the flavours develop and infuse the zucchini. They keep in the fridge for 3 weeks.Serve with whatever you choose to. If your brine does not 😋quiet cover the zucchini just add more water to top the jar off. since these are fridge pickles the water / vinegar ratio is not critical. if you want a kick add some red chili peppers. Yummy. And Ta - dah your done. Enjoy. I hope you give these a whirl girl. or Lady !! Were off to Walmart look for some Tomatillo seeds.💀☠🧛🧙🧙‍♂🧟🐿🐦🕸🕷🎃Happy Fall Yall.

Hi Robbie & Gary, Interesting facts on Tomatillos. Here in Massachusetts I haven't heard of anyone growing them but you never know. Temps are dropping to just above freezing here in Mass. I brought in my sweet pepper plants I heard I can keep the plants over winter and replant in the spring. They finally bloomed and got green peppers, Yay! I was so surprised at how much NEW DIRT your planting method produces. We have a lot of clover here in MASS which is a real pain to eradicate, the clover overtook the pot when my spaghetti plant died. I had to throw the pot of soil away, nasty plant to have in a veggie garden. I went thru the other pots of dirt and will add them to a pile for next year. NONE of my Squash or Zucchini plants produced female flowers. I'll try cucumbers again next year but will start them earlier in doors. I ended up doing a replanting of all of the above plants. Now my cherry tomatoes on the other hand are still outside and producing fruit and blossoms. Yay!!

Like tomatoes, but I do not use fertilizer, I just load my totes up with leaves from the garden and kitchen scraps, and never let the plant completely dry out make sure you keep up with the water, you can also layer with pots as you grow, helps retain water

It may be too damp(?), I would try them with good drainage soil, in FULL SUN, and still water daily, in a tote or pot. Hopefully it will stay warm enough for them to develop, so they can grow flowers and have them set to fruit.

My tomatilloes had flowers and set the little husks, but the husks are all empty. There's not any fruit in any of them. I guess they needed more water. We had a frost last night and one coming again tonight. I'll have to try again next year. Sigh. Green tomato Salsa Verde isn't the same as Salsa Verde made with tomatilloes.
