This album is their masterpiece. ANTHRAX was the punkiest of the big 4. TIME and BLOOD are also brilliant on this record.

Anthrax had a lot of songs that had a social message... usually about equality and how empty and stupid racism is. Which is one of the reasons why they did that Public Enemy crossover. BtW I known you heard some of it but the music video is super fun and worth a look.

Anthrax are the unsung hero's of Thrash. They can be and are goofy at times but they came with a message in the 80's that's relevant today. They bring more groove to the table than most bands that started at the same time. They sound better live right now than any of the other "big four." Check out Caught In A Mosh, Antisocial, I Am The Law, Belly of The Beast or Got The Time. Enjoy!

The songs from the album "Among the Living" are masterpieces. They make you want to move. I was amazed when that album came out. I don't think they ever quite did an album after that which was as impressive. It was good, but man that album was amazing. EDIT: I mention it because I don't think you've reacted to any songs from it. I like "Madhouse" which you did but that is a different flavor and is from before "Among the Living". "Keep it in the family" is from after "Among the Living".

Persistence is an incredible album. It capped off their four consecutive album run of dominance starting with Spreading The Disease, Among The Living, State Of Euphoria, and of course Persistence Of Time. My suggestion of song is A Skeleton in the Closet off of Among. To me it epitomizes what thrash is all about. It's the perfect song.

Never fully got into this release, but "Got The Time" is one of my faves and it's on this record...it opened the door fully to Anthrax for me. What got me to check them out was a song called "I'm The Man" which is a line/scene from one of my all time favorite movies...Easy Money with Rodney Dangerfield and Joe Pesci. I think I might just have to re-visit this release...LOVE the time changes in this tune!! Great reaction!! Their release titled "Worship Music" is awesome as well, check it out! Now, I have been really trying to get several other channels to react to a Pat Travers song called Snortin' Whiskey and no one seems to be interested...but I think YOU would love it! But as satoricrush recommended Caught In A Mosh is one of the best tracks Anthrax have done. Brace yourself long post incoming ;) Saw them for my second ever gig back in 1988, They had Living Colour opening for them, this was my first time hearing an all Black Metal band, so heavy, so funky. I thank Anthrax for expanding my musical knowledge. Oh and had a super special moment at that gig too. Caught In A Mosh was the first encore, when it started I lost my shit cos its a top tune, and, I went for it ran down to the front at Hammersmith Odeon hoping to get on the stage, lucky timing as security were distracted by the pit that blew up as this tune started. I scrambled up on stage and just went into full mosh mode, flailing my arms around like a loon having the best time, then, I felt a hand drop onto my shoulder. I stopped moshing cos if it was security they threw you off the stage back into the crowd and their were some fine ladies in the front row. Next thing I know a body jumps on my back and an arm with a microphone appears in my view, It was Joey Belladonna still singing the track. So I spent the rest of the tune carrying him around the stage on my back, he kept yelling in my ear You Crazy English Motherf**ker when he wasn't singing. High fived when the tune ended, then I got escorted off the stage by security, One of the best experiences in my whole life. My son always sighs when we meet folks at gigs cos I love sharing this story, hell why not it's my only claim to fame \m/ \m/

Anthrax has been my favorite band since discovered them. Started with Metallica getting me into metal, Megadeth cemented it, but Anthrax was the one I felt the closest with. They usually had social meanings in their songs, while also having a fun aspect to them. When thrash metal and the Big 4 started going, had the three west coast bands, Slayer, Metallica, and Megadeth. Anthrax was the one that had more of a punk rock feel to them and came from the east coast. Fistful of Metal had definite influence from Metallica. They were rudderless until they heard Metallica when Metallica arrived to NYC to record Kill Em All. Anthrax did their own take, but it had a Metallica feel. After Fistful, Charlie Benante took on more of the song writing. He's the drummer, but he writes all the music. Then the other members tweak it when they record it. He was heavily influenced by punk rock, which is why Spreading the Disease, Among The Living, State of Euphoria all had a punk rock feel to them. This album, Persistence of Time, was being worked on when Scott Ian was going through a divorce. He writes the lyrics for the songs, even though he's the rhythm guitarist. Charlie had grown a bit tired of writing the same punk influenced songs, and wanted to try something new, and they wanted to change as a correction from all the bright colors from State of Euphoria. This album went dark, Scott's lyrics went darker. He said that he was imaging the vocals being deeper, and during the recording of this album, he kept pushing Joey to sing deeper, but it still did not match what he wanted the vocals to sound like. Years later, he realized it wasn't Joey's fault, and was his fault. They fired Joey after this album. John Bush came in from Armored Saint. At one point, Metallica wanted him to be the singer, when they were still trying to have James Hetfield be only a guitarist. John Bush stayed with his high school friends in Armored Saint. When Armored Saint guitarist died, John Bush was open to leaving and joined Anthrax. Charlie kept the same theme of darker metal, moving away from punk influenced thrash, and John Bush had the deeper vocals Scott was looking for. Their first album with John Bush was produced by Dave Jerden, the producer for Alice In Chains, and Sound of White Noise had an almost grunge feel to it, but still metal. Anthrax then recorded Stomp 442, which is different, again. It also had the first appearance of Dimebag Darrel, the unofficial member of Anthrax. He would play a solo on two songs for this album. And two more on the next album, Vol 8, and two more on We've Come For You All. Vol 8 was all over the place. They didn't have a record contract when they wrote the album. They just experimented with whatever they had. I believe this is when Charlie built a studio at his house in Chicago, and started using that to really experiment on things. They recorded the album, and a record company released it, but then that company filed bankruptcy after, cratering the album. It became hard to find for awhile. We've Come For You All featured some of Charlie's fastest drumming, and started a step back towards their thrash roots. It also had the introduction of lead guitarist Rob Caggiano. Nostalgia started to creep in with several bands, and Anthrax wasn't immune. People were wanting an 80s reunion of Joey Belladonna and Dan Spitz. Frank Bello had left the band, and replaced by Joey Vera from Armored Saint. The reunion tour brought back Joey, Dan, and Frank. At the end of the tour, Scott and Charlie were ready to record again, but Dan didn't want to. Frank was on board again, but Joey hemmed and hawed. Turned out, he was getting bad information from Dan Spitz, who had told them how much Anthrax had made after Sound Of White Noise, and Joey was basing his compensation off of that. Anthrax were pulling that type of money anymore. Anthrax is ready for a new album, but don't have a singer or a lead guitarist. Rob agrees to comeback. They call up John, and he doesn't want to feel like a last resort call, and he turns them down. Anthrax has no singer still. A chance meeting with Corey Taylor, and Corey volunteers to join Anthrax. He's totally ready to add Anthrax to his current commitments of Slipknot and Stone Sour. Anthrax is excited, they are ready for Corey, and the day of the flight for Corey, Roadrunner executives call and tell Corey he cannot be in three bands full time. Corey is now out, back to finding a singer. Poop on Frank's back? Now the Dan Nelson experiment. Rob knew a singer, that was from NYC, and was not in any band at the time when Rob ran into him. Rob convinces the rest of Anthrax to try him out. From the live performances that you can find online, his vocals are similar to Phil from Pantera. He can scream, he can growl, it seems like Anthrax is going to try for a Pantera style. Anthrax writes an album, they're finishing it up and they're about to start a tour with Slipknot. They're also booked for a summer festival in Europe. Then something happens. Stories vary. Anthrax put out a release that Dan Nelson is sick, and they have to back out of the tour. Dan Nelson said he's fine, and they're lying. Anthrax releases a statement that Dan Nelson is no longer in the band. One rumor, Dan Nelson took a dump on Frank Bello's back. No tour, now they have an album with a singer no longer in the band. They call John Bush, and he agrees to come back and do a couple shows with them. They talk to him about rerecording the vocals for the album, but he declines. He didn't feel like it would be right. Chance meeting, again. Charlie is in a bar in NYC, when in walks Joey Belladonna. They hadn't talked in some time. They hug it out. They sit down, they talk, and hash things out. Joey is back in. Joey rerecords Worship Music. After the touring, Rob has decided he isn't getting the music outlet of writing he really wants, with Charlie writing all of Anthrax music. He leaves the band on good terms, and he goes back to being a record producer, which is what he was doing when he met Anthrax. He produced We've Come For You All. The first band he has lined up to produce after leaving Anthrax, is Volbeat. Volbeat arrives to the studio, without a lead guitarist. Rob agrees to record lead guitar for them, and he gets along so well with them, after they finish the album, they ask him to join, and now Rob is the guitarist in Volbeat. Anthrax, now with Joey back, gets a bit of a resurgence. They come out with For All Kings. Out of the Big 4, Anthrax is still going strong. Slayer has retired. Metallica is off and on doing things. Megadeth is still going too, but Dave's voice has started showing his age. Long post, sorry. But there's a bit of a run down of Anthrax. If you follow them on Facebook or Instagram or Twitter, they're putting out a history of Anthrax, leading to their 40th year as being a band. For some songs to recommend for Anthrax... also, live versions are usually better for Anthrax during Joey era. 1st Joey era (live versions are best for this time frame): Armed and Dangerous, Gung Ho, Metal Thrashing Mad, A.I.R., Among The Living, Skeletons In The Closet (both Among and Skeleton songs from Live In Chile), Be All, End All, Now It's Dark, Belly of the Beast. John era (studio versions are better for John): Only, Black Lodge, Room For One More, Random Acts of Senseless Violence, Fueled, King Size, In A Zone (the ending of this song crushes), Inside Out (only listen to album version, don't do music video version, it cuts out Dimebag's solo), Safe Home (favorite solo from Rob Caggiano), Nobody Knows Anything, Think About An End 2nd Joey era (video or studio versions work): Devil You Know, In The End, You Gotta Believe, Breathing Lightning, Evil Twin, Blood Eagle Wings Just for fun: I'm The Man, Startin' Up A Posse, Bring The Noise

I echo most saying this album is a masterpiece. The earlier stuff while good could be inconsistent. And imo State of Euphoria was the worst then they came back with this album and righted the ship so to speak. Seeing Anthrax during this album open up for Iron Maiden was sweet too. Persistence of Time and Sound of White Noise (the album after this one) are 2 of my all time favorite Anthrax albums.

@The Adventures Of TNT, Hey I'd like to know your HONEST answer to this question. If somebody (like myself for example whos niether Black or Jewish) were to sing this song (with every one of the lyrics without censoring myself) (IF I DONT MEAN ANY HARM OR OFFENSE AT ALL, Since I DONT WANT TO CAUSE HARM OR OFFEND AT ALL) were to sing this song just as it is in this video would you and or allot of other people take it the wrong way if you know what I mean...?

Anthrax can be pretty deep, lot of their songs have deep messages. Also I don't know if you read any Stephen King at all, but one of Kings best books, in my own opinion is a book that contains four "short" stories three of which were made into movies. "Shawshank Redemption", "Apt Pupil"and "Stand By Me" are the three movies based off of three of the stories in that book. One of those stories, Apt Pupil is also the basis for the Anthrax song "Skeletons in the Closet" It's a story about how a kid finds out that an old man in his neighborhood was a Nazi SS guard, and the kid pretty much blackmails the old man to tell him Nazi horror stories and eventually the kid goes off the deep end.

Oh man! Good deal. Anthrax is really unappreciated today. There isn't a bad track on this album. Anything off of Among the Living or State of Euphoria is awesome too. One of their newer albums is Worship Music

Persistence Of Time is actually the darkest, heaviest and most mature album from the original run. They dealt with social issues before this ("Indians" comes to mind) but the lyrics to this song were directly inspired by the murder of a black teenager in NYC named Yusuf Hawkins. There's definitely a very strong anti-racism message that flows through this song. Great message, real banger of a tune. 🤘

Hey, Helloween makes it work with Michael Kiske and Andi Deris. I don't see why Anthrax couldn't make it work with Joey Belladonna and John Bush.

Can you do some 80’s Glam/Hair Metal bands like Motley Crue, Poison, Dokken, and Ratt. The poppy side of 80’s Metal! You will know the difference between 80’s Thrash and Glam Metal!
