I just found out there is one remaining C5A with the TF39's still on it. Its on display at the Dover AFB museum in the original colors the C5 made her debut with. Makes me sad I'll only ever hear this sound on KZfaq now.

I remember that when I left active duty from the Navy, I had to do a year of Reserves at Naval Air Station, Atlanta, and NAS Atlanta was on the property of Dobbins AFB, so I got to witness these "screaming giants!" I worked with another screaming machine, the F4J Phantoms, with a Mach 2.28 speed. Still love the military jets. Watched the Blue Angels fly here in November of '22 for 3 days straight!

@@steveowens913oh dude! From 78-82, I was at Hahn AB Germany. Started out with F4s and went to F16s. Oh my, what a sound. Saw the Thunderbirds flying F16s, twice. Older troops said the F16 Thunderbird is pretty, but the F4 Thunderbirds were amazing.

@Stephen Hunt WOW!! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT??!! I WAS STATIONED AT DOVER AFB FROM 1982-1989. I worked in "Support Section" LOX/NITRO(call sign "Sierra 14"). CMSGT Coke(call sign "Sierra 2"), was in charge of 436 OMS. And then in 1989, I PCS'd to the Azores, Lajes AB(Portugal). I was there for a year, 1990. Then I PCS'd to McGuire AFB, NJ. While there, I TDY'd to Rhein Mein AB, Frankfurt Germany. After that, back to McGuire AFB, and then I got out in 1992. I loved it and miss it sometimes! 😁 I was an E-5(SSGT). TF-39s were a little under powered compared to other large aircraft engines like the 747. Switching to the CF6 was a very good decision. Yes the TF-39 had the great distinctive sound. Wasn’t a bad engine to work on either.

Lots of questions I get asked and the most popular ones are take off weight. Under military command I can bend the pay load limit I will go to 863,000 pounds needing over 1 mile to get off ground. And when landing flaps are 100 percent and thrust reverse in deploying immediately on touch down. Thanks for watching captain and shift commander LABonte may the force be with you. 32 years of active service I

This aircraft, 70-0451, is soon to be put on permanent display at the Travis AFB Aviation Museum (whenever funding comes in). UPDATE: As of 2022, due to extreme lack of funding, 0451 is being scrapped UPDATE 2024: Some good news! Some pieces of 0451 preserved and reused for training use & some pieces converted to luggage tags. I bought one of those C-5A luggage tags.

Translation: Stuttgart airport is also a USAF airbase, so few times a week we get a few military planes, but a C5-A is rarity here; usually the USAF comes with C-17 and C-130 aircraft. (My father was once a USAF commander at Echterdingen airfield, which is what this airport was called then in the early 1970s, but we lived in Zuffenhausen....I don't recall seeing ANY big cargo planes there at any time when I visited, but probably some came through).
