This burner is placed inside a stove so that all the air that the flames need come through the bottom of the burner. I have a drip feed oil setup feeding the burner and although a very simple and crude setup it allows enough control over the combustion. Cheers Gerry

Thank you so much for Sharing this, i live in Skandinavia and it gets very cold here during the vintertime and it is very expensive to heat up the workshop it’s around 80 squarefod but now i can heat it up for free and i can work even when it’s minus 20˚celsius and saving a lot of money.

I found air control is the most important part. My wood stove is actually a little too big, but with some extra sheet metal to concentrate the heat it worked really well.

I really like this idea. I am going to modify and old wood stove I have in my garage shop space. I plan to use a stainless large dig bowl for the Tin and stainless 6" flue pipe for the Stack. Disc rotor and Im all set.

Thanks for sharing your design, it's brilliant. I'll be utilizing a rather deep stainless steel lid, turned upside down & one of those small propane canisters, that lanterns screw to the top of, as the updraft tube. I've run into a few difficulties living aboard an antique sailboat, but think this may solve at least a couple of them. I've got 2 small propane tanks stacked on top of one another, with a heavy truck rim on the bottom & a spark arrestor on the top. The bottom tank is meant to dispose of non biodegrade household waste. The top tank will have an oil burner like this one and the draft tube from the oil burner will go into the bottom tank. Since a properly functioning oil burner reaches such high temperatures, it should be capable of eliminating pollutants released by burning plastic to it's most basic element... carbon. This is the same idea used by "environmentally friendly" municipal incinerators in the U.S. Aside from no longer having to pack all of my garbage to a dumpster (which isn't very near), I can use the heat produced to flash distill water. I'll add a square tank made from plumbing parts at the top of the upper tank, with two T fittings. One of those fittings leading to a valve to let non potable water in & the other going to a copper condenser, situated inside of a bucket of cold water. In the center of the square tank for flash distillation, will go another coil of copper tubing to be used to heat water. I live in Florida, where a hot shower is hardly missed, but I'd like to have the option to do so.

Great video Gerry, thanks for filming it. Would it make sense to instead of dripping, try atomizing fuel like car injectors do, in order to even further increase efficiency and prevent soot buildup in the chimney?

Love watching your stove builds. Just got one up and running myself and still tweaking. Mine is a forced air unit as it wasn't practical to do an updraft setup like you tend to use. My issue is I'm getting soot buildup on my glass doors within a few hours of running (faster if I crank it up). I typically run it at a fast drip (any faster of a drip and it would be a steady thin stream). I'm using forced air with the air pipe coming down into the center of the bowl. Air slots in the tube were cut on angles. I use a cut rotor to cover the bowl. The bowl and rotor tend to glow and the fire isn't lazy but still getting soot build up on the inside of the stove walls and glass. Any thoughts on which direction I need to go to help correct this issue or is it just something I'll have to live with? Thanks!

Great videos gerry ! I have an old oil control valve from an old oil furnace that has float valves sort of like a carburetor, they contol gravity flow of the furnace oil automatically in the burn chamber, perhaps a video of one of these control valves running waste oil ? Would be interesting if they run a stove efficiently. Or if it would be safe (if filtered) to run these float valves on waste oil ? -thanks

Hi Eugene. These sweet tins are quite hard to get. Most Christmas sweets are in plastic containers and they dont make very good waste oil burners. REally appreciate the support and looking forward to flying paragliders and paramotors with you and Agnes in the Spring Cheers Gerry 👍👍

Hmm, I wonder if that could be adapted to have an integrated 1 gallon tank at the bottom, Like a huge camping stove burner? Im sure there are others like me that have old wood burning furnaces that would like to burn waste vegetable oil. I have tried mixing it with wood pellets and with saw dust but when it gets hot the pellets/saw dust starts to "sweat" oil tha dribbles down to the ash pan. I've been experimenting with a pan with a grate for bottom that sits above a pan that sits above another pan that catches ash and oil where the oil that "sweats" down is burned off . It works but needs refining. Its probably easier to a get burner of the camping stove type working.

Gerry make a donut out of a carbon felt welding blanket and don’t have drip feed soak a 1 or 2 ltr cooking oil it could burn longer and just top up the wick when opening the door easier

Hi Peter. I know it looks like it would but air is actually being pulled through the pipe into the stove as the flames require oxygen to burn which cools the pipe. On top of that the oil itself cools the pipe as it travels down the pipe to be burned. Hope this helps Cheers Gerry 👍

Hi Gerry, Great idea. It looked like you used the cookie tin and dog food can to prove that the concept worked and switched to thicker metals so the burner would hold up better over time. No smoke would indicate that you have complete combustion. Does that sound right? Thanks for the video! -mike

Hi Mike. That's correct. The Sweet tin burner is just to prove that the burner design is sound but due to the output would not last long. The thicker welded version is the same design but will last a year or more and is also easy to make but needs welding. It does burn clean but with a couple more mods can be made more efficient. It concentrates the flame and heat by deflecting the original flame downwards a bit. Remember he said it was “to deflect the flame a little bit?” That was why.

Guess why its free, because they otherwise had to pay for removing the oil. I love the concept, and i store used vegetable oil & engine oil myself, but i dont really plan to burn it, its more of a emergency backup thing, for fuel/heat also if you store it you dont have to pay to remove it haha. I would bet its illegal all over Europe.

It’s funny how all the developed countries say, ‘you citizens are too big for your britches, too hard to control’-so they make everything illegal that would help lift their poorer classes up and make the other classes even more prosperous. On the other hand, the undeveloped countries don’t make such things illegal. So in some regards their leaders love their own countries more than the developed countries’ leaders.

Hi. This design works great and at the moment is my preferred option but made from steel works really well and is not too big. The flue length and diameter are important to making this work without a fan. Mys setup is 14 feet flue lengtha ans 6 inhes in diameter. Hope this helps Cheers Gerry 👍

Hi Gerry. I've watched your heating vids with great interest and want to put something together myself to heat my workshop. So I had a thought. Would it be possible to convert an old gas cooker to burn wood and waste oil in the oven? Idea for a video perhaps?

Gas cooktops/ovens aren't really built of robust enough materials to last more than a few uses, unless you have one from the 1950s. They're nothing but bent sheet steel, held together with sheet metal screws. The force exerted from heat warping the sheet steel will sheer the screws in half. The difference between the heat produced by a vaporous gas burner and an oil burner is immense. The way to tell the energy density of a petroleum product is to look at how many hydrogen and carbon atoms need to be strung together to create a molecule of that substance. The more hydrocarbons, the more energy. I have a suspicion that the top of the oven would get hot enough to melt. It would make for a cool video though

How big is the bottom inlet hole and the flue pipe exhaust hole?

Hi Rod. There is no smell in the shed at all because even with the door of the stove open all the smoke and air for combustion gets drawn into the stove. Outside I dont have any problems with down drafts so it all goes up. When I am on the roof next I'll check but it has not been a problem so far 😜 Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry. 👍

do you need the brake rotor? and if not why put it on.?? I would love to see it without it. I'm thinking the negative air pressure is the main cause of the 'fan' sound and major flame increase when the door is shut... the flame has to draw more air in from the bottom... as a suction which super charges the flame. I want to make that on a mico scale... hmmm...

Man u wanna make your room warm or all the earth? If u don't put any iron or metal around or on the flame, it just go up and went out with all energy and heat so u will not get most of heat, that is why there is a metal around all burner, I think it's basics everyone should learnt from school physic lesson.

The top plate holds the heat lower in thr stove and reflects the heat down to the oil to help it vaporize and burn more consistently.

Hi Dave. It's just a chunk of metal that gets red hot and helps convert the veggie oil into a combustable gas. Its a strategic placement though as the heat wants to rise with the flames but are restricted by the brake disk which in turn gets red hot and makes the burn even more agressive. I've seen you have burners with holes from the middle and some with holes from the outside. Is one option better then the other? Have you tried one with holes from both the inside and the outside??? I have made a burner from a stainless steel beer keg, with holes on the inside, wondering if I drill a few extra holes on the outside will make it better or worse, cheers for the inspiration

The oil will only burn once it's vaporized. The oil in the pipe is still in liquid state so there's no threat of retrograde fire. The open fitting outside the drum that the oil runs through also allows air to be sucked in with the oil preventing vacuum which would be needed for the fire to burn retrograde.

Well build a duct that collects the chimney exhaust and sends it thru a collection of sprinklers water walls to scrub it cleans, then pour the water down the drain and let the city deal with cleaning it, since your already paying them to. Or What I intend on doing, once I figure it all out, it's mixed the two fuel sources like use wood but supplement it with occasional oil to heat things up a little bit here and there. Or do what your car does and route your primary exhaust back around to mix with clean air and get a second burning before being exhausted at the main exhaust. Or Deny everything, and blame it on the neighbors, and Hufflepuff a lot so people think you're serious and about to go do something.

Hi X D there is no smell in the shed as even with the door open all the air for combustion is drawn into the stove. No fumes at all. Cheers Gerry

An addition to my previous comment, making it out of tin cans or aluminium is a bad idea, its a fire hasard because it has a low melting point,as Gerry said at the end of the video that is correct, use Steel instead, if you dont you should not attempt making these.

Another good video. However, although burning waste oil in sweet tins is an economic way of providing heat. One huge drawback is the increased risk of diabetes.
