Awful Archaeology Ep. 1: The Oldoway Man

In this episode of Awful Archaeology I discuss the skeleton of the Oldoway Man; a mysterious homo sapien unearthed in the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. This find baffled archaeologists like Hans Reck and Louis Leaky due to it being found in a middle Pleistocene bed. Since its deposition should have indicated the find was around a million years old, both archaeologists worked tirelessly to figure out what this mostly modern human was doing in such an ancient deposit.

Right? How freaking petty do you have to be to destroy super old monuments? Honestly, I hope they get re-built and not just left in shambles. Nothing can be done if all structures are destroyed and never built back up. My number one issue about modern war isn't just that monuments and lives are being destroyed, it's that everyone leaves them like that as a "reminder". A reminder that will only cause more pain and suffering the more people look at them. You really think the original builders' intent was to make people feel fear and contempt? People allow wars to strip monuments and buildings of their original meanings, so all you can feel is negative emotions that no-one is allowed to move on from.

lmao the giant skeleton people are even worse than the hobby SciFi-egyptologists, I watched a video on youtube where someone talked about an excavation site of a giant human skeleton with a giant snake wrapped around it. It was literally just a funny art project which was not only super easy to see and obvious, but even explained by the artist himself who showed the process of making it and the guy in the video talked about how giant humans couldn't even live or walk (just look at the tallest humans alive having the worst of bone and muscle issues). You could argue that a giant human could be more like a primitive ape, something like a Gigantopithecus so it could somehow work; but they literally just show you upscaled bones of normal small humans. People in the comments claimed how the church actively tries to hide the bones from them so people don't find out that the bible is a lie, even though this would literally proof that Goliath or whoever existed, proving the human evolution wrong but okay. And of course they completely ignored the simplest of facts about gravity and biology, and the artist who made the skeleton is just someone hired by the government to say that in front of the camera. It's been the worst side of youtube I found so far

I love videos like this. The timing, scripting and format are all perfect for the information to be digestible and interesting without becoming boring or lengthy. As a curious neurodivergent individual I greatly appreciate this. Now excuse me as I go to binge the entire series.

This rocks. I love hearing you talk about this stuff! It would be super helpful with the graphics if there was some annotation or something to highlight the things you're mentioning, since a lot of those diagrams are pretty complicated. Can't wait for the rest!

Oh this is fun. My biological anthropology and archaeology classes nearly killed me, but learning things through hoaxes, fakes, and red herrings being debunked is much more fun! But also I'm hearing that there's a new set of interesting papers to add to my list of "writing that was probably thrown away or burnt decades ago but DOES have a SLIM chance of randomly turning up in someone's attic or something someday"

The Wikipedia article on Reck says the exact opposite, that Leakey accepted Reck's estimate of the skeletons age. This has since been disproven and also that the skeleton was not buried on purpose, but due to a geological fault.

6:47 - i mean, yeah rofl. i'm not a _huge_ archaeology dork. always been more of a broader paleodork, but the entire field is colored by the exact same sort of passive aggressive head-butting. it's an absolute blast to behold. it's like spectating some sort of psychological sport, like abstract thought-boxing. it's fun to participate too, but you know that already lol

Love this series I will say your title cards take a little too long but overall the video is fantastic my dude! But yeah WW2 is the bane of early modern science. So much was lost to us because of Hitler and the Nazis and from allied bombs. Two others of which were the first nearly complete skeleton of a spinosaurus, and a ton of information about transgenderism that we are only relearning within the past five years.
