Damnable has the idea of destruction . It is the adjectival form of damn which literally means damage ( by the way damn , damage and condemn are all congnates)

Sire alex by and large we can make a conclusion that the concept of fear sometimes gives us good connotation via the notion you fear sth becayse it is extremely riveting and captivating. This why we have a couple of words that derived from the same root with opposite connotation. For example, awesome and awful, terrible and terrific. We can see such evolution in other languages . In arabic, the word that mean fear" khaof" has a bad and good connotation depending on context. Also we can see such a change in the word formidable which started as a word meaning fearful then developed the good conntation over time.
