"The King's Speech," "Shakespeare in Love," and "Terms of Endearment" rank higher than "Lawrence of Arabia? Really? While the three films are good, David Lean's masterpiece outshines all of them combined. Enjoyed watching your montage.

Once you accept the idea that a large number of Best Picture winners weren’t even the best picture of their respective years, then you understand how subjective rankings can be. I disagree with a lot of the specific placements in this list, but so what? There are a lot of films here that I love, admire, and view repeatedly for a variety of different reasons; there are also some that I positively can’t stand. Again, so what? This ranking is as valid as any other. It is also extremely well done with an excellent selection of representative shots and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.

I personally would have put the Godfather, Casablanca, and Gone With The Wind as my top 3. They are generally amongst the top 10 films on the AFI list of the top 100 movies of all time. But, everyone has different tastes.

I would be interested in know what the criteria was for determining the list. The Godfather at #3 and The Godfather Part 2 at #33? Part 2 was as good (if not better) than the original.

Hello- people have to realize what was judged Best Picture decades ago was based said film's appreciation then. perception of quality changes over time. for instance The Greatest Show on Earth the 1952 winner is a corny hokey film but its also diamond grade corn and hokey. no one could make a blockbuster film like DeMille.

Gone With The Wind should have been at number one. That movie has retained it spot for a reason. No matter how much it's been maligned and it's been fashionable to hate it. The majority the world over in audience terms, it's beloved. More so now in the USA then ever before. That motion picture will outlive us. While others will be forgotten.

you know what fascinates me? That someone else's assessment and ranking qualifies to another as having no taste or lack of understanding of the subject. I have seen EVERY Best Picture and my own rankings may be a little different. But I found this list to be quiet refreshing. There are NO wrong opinions.

The Best Years of our Lives and How Green was my Valley are in a top 10 because of the humanity contained in them . They both deal with what life is all about. As for cinematic achievement David Leans Lawrence of Arabia is hard to top ; with a few answers to world problems. Just saying as an older man these days .

very interesting list. Some real surprises from other lists I've seen. I imagine that the very high placement of Shakespeare in Love is probably the most unexpected. I haven't seen it since it came out. Its hard to separate it from all the baggage around it

Was psyched that the top 20 had selections that are older than 20 (or 30 or 40) years old. #1 surprised me. But it's a personal fave (out of many). In fact a great many of my faves made the list. And the most surprising? I truly had no idea that so many of my faves had won the award.

I appreciated that "How Green Was My Valley", the picture that beat out "Citizen Kane" for Best Picture, was ranked fairly low, and I appreciate the uniqueness of your choices in the rankings. Not a bad list, other than, "Shakespeare In Love". Notice Shirley MacLaine in at least three of the top winners. Most talented actor actress entertainer ever. Did I mention beautiful?

I just remember your #94 on the list, "Cavalcade" (1933), and when I saw it as as part of a college film program in the early 1970's. Yes, it was old and "veddy British," but there was no denying the sweep of early 20th-century history that it depicted. Highly affecting: the mother Jane, just having learned of the death of her son Joe, wanders the streets full of revelers celebrating the end of WW1. She raises her noisemaker with the rest of them, but only for a moment before her grief crowds in on her again. I've never forgotten the heartbreak of that scene. Perhaps "Cavalcade" is at the bottom of this list, but there is still a lot to recommend it.

I enjoyed seeing this list play out. I would be interested to see what a top 100 list would be based on the number of lowest to highest number of academy member votes, or margins of votes, or percentage of the overall votes during their respective years. That numerical vote calculation would take away any single individual's biases and preferences and be another interesting way to tally the top 100 of all time.

Hello- another thought. the reasoning behind the rankings would be interesting. for instance I find it fascinating Daffy Stardust ranks An American in Paris over Oliver, My Fair Lady or The Sound of Music.

Okay, I have to say THANK YOU for not shitting on Titanic like everyone else loves to do for whatever reason, but all that goodwill was destroyed when I saw Shakespeare in Love at #7.

The winners are awarded as a result of various circumstances of the period in question, and not by their artistic merits on most of cases. In the 20s and 30s it was the big espectacle, in the 40s the war theme, in the 50s social-realism, in the 60s the big superproductions, in the 70s there was a return to social melodrama, and in the 80s Hollywood was becoming too politically correct, and it got worse up to this day. Many of the films of the last forty years are easily forgettable, and we wonder how they got the prize in the first place: Diving Miss Daisy, Out of Africa, Ghandi, Slumdog Millionaire, Twelve Years a Slave, to name a few. The Academy has always been too soppy and too sugary.

Just wondering what criteria you used when deciding on your rankings. I tried to find a common thread across your best movies, your worst ones, and the ones in the middle, but came up empty. Personally, I found most of your choices bewildering -- so many way too high or too low (especially "Shakespeare in Love"), but I would probably feel that way about anyone else's list as well. I give you credit for having the conviction to rank them, giving us a glimpse of so many the average fan has never seen, and a beautiful presentation.

Some of these films that ranked low were products of their time and were the best picture of that time.

I haven't watched the Academy Awards Show for decades now. It lost legitimacy for me when Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" wasn't nominated for Best Picture.

Perhaps adding 3 o 4 points on how you score them (cinematography, script, historical value, etc.) Would help to understand your choices.

What is AMAZING to me: In my opinion, most of these "Best Picture" winners are REALLY BAD Movies. I've seen many of them, and have no desire to see those I have not.

Seems rather random. But that is what movie viewing is all about. Thought the presentation very well edited, however. The short little clips really captured each selection well. There were so many best pictures, some way better than others.

My thoughts: Tom Jones and English Patient are way too low (it's become fashionable to dump on EP but I still find it compelling and moving). Oliver, Chicago, King's Speech and Shakespeare in Love are too high for me (Oliver should be in the bottom 10 - I find it annoying beyond belief).

The Apartment is one of the best films I have ever seen, and seeing it your number 1 is refreshing! It’s all about taste and experience at the end of the day. Your list reflects the opinion who sees the world a little differently than most of us, sorry. Shakespeare in Love beats Lawrence of Arabia? The Apartment beats The Godfather? Sorry, your list shows a Gen-X bias and a lack of appreciation for the craft of movie making. Your top 20 definitely is mis-ordered and you have some of the best buried in the middle. But as you said this is a personal lost and not reflective of reality.

I’m actually pretty happy to see Moonlight being ranked pretty high with a respective #41. After the whole La La Land fiasco, I was a bit worried that Moonlight would be considered a “token” win after the whole #Oscarsowhite campaign the year before. 6 years after its Best Picture win, it’s great that many people still agree that Moonlight was a good choice for Best Picture.

Wonderful assessment, Daffy! Being a seventy year old cinephile, I think it depends on the viewer's knowledge of what constitutes the " best. " For my part, it's the writing, acting, cinematography and direction combining to realize a perfect picture. Most importantly, the story must involve the interest of the viewer.

Thank you for putting “Moonlight” as high as it is - another list like this had it even lower. With that said, it is definitively the best film of the last 25 years, and should be in the top five if not number one.

I remember some one else on KZfaq saying Cavalcade and Cimarron were perhaps the 2 worst best picture winners in academy history. They’re on my watchlist. Really enjoyed the montage. All About Eve would’ve been my #1 pick, however had Sunset Boulevard won that year it would’ve been my pick.

What I didn't understand from this list is that they ranked Chicago higher then return of the king. I think what also surprised me is how godfather part 2 wasn't higher on the list as well

Great list! We have a lot in common. I could try and come off as a cinema connoisseur, but that would be lying. I appreciate your honesty (just disregard comments that get personal opinion mixed up with what gets you brownie points). Contrary to popular opinion, I found Out Of Africa, Gandhi and The English Patient unbearably boring and Forrest Gump completely overrated, since it's ridiculously far fetched and a cliche fest. I think The Deer Hunter is too low in your rating, I love that movie even though the pacing is very uneven. #1 is an excellent choice! Some of the lesser known Oscar winners I haven't watched yet, so I can't comment on these. Many of my all time favorites didn't win the Award anyway.

I love the fact that Chicago & The King's Speech were highly ranked - great films that are far too often are the bottom of these lists.

Charlton Heston in "Ben Hur" was so outstanding becasue his speech to Masala showed his feeling strongly when he claims, "you can conquer the land but not the people! He said it with so much conviction I was cheering from my sofa at home and saying "YES, YES!!!

While I wildly disagree with your opinions...film rating wise...it was enormously entertaining and professionally designed. PS Fashionable or not, I loathed The English Patient when I paid to see it, and that was BEFORE it was fashionable

As a whole I agree with your rankings, I think I would have swapped only 2 pictures I would have put My Fair Lady over Oliver. But that is my personal preference. My husband and I have an on going battle over the 1950 winner "All about Eve", I think "Sunset Boulevard" should have won and he is for "All About Eve". The argument will never be settled, because we both agree that they are excellent films, and it all comes down to personal preference. Thank you for choosing the Apartment as #1, I don't think it gets the attention it deserves.

Personally I think Gandhi, Braveheart are great films. Braveheart may not be historically accurate, but its one heck of a film and the film score is incredible. Gandhi tells the life story and its an incredible story about about an incredible man, someone I admire greatly and Ben Kingsley is great in it. The Departed is one of my fav Martin Scorsese films so entertaining, great action, great actors. I may put The Apartment in top ten but not number 1, more likely to put “On The Waterfront” as 1 and “The Godfather” as number 2.

Bewildered by the entire ranking - The Apartment far superior to Lawrence of Arabia and Gandhi and Forrest Gump at the bottom of the barrel - but I’m simply grateful #1 was NOT Gone With the Wind or Schindler’s List. Hey, at least Apartment and On the Waterfront aren’t overrated and tediously worshipped by anyone and everyone. And they’re actually very entertaining. Again, bewildered by the rankings, but gotta grudgingly respect it.

I agreed with a lot of this. I might have mixed the top 5 up a bit, but having, The Apartment number one was a wonderful choice, though its my number 2, I'm guessing most wouldn't put it that high. It deserves it.

I've got a long way to go . . But right off, the three I did disagree with were the [relatively]low rankings of No Country for Old Men, Best Years of Our Lives, and Driving Miss Daisy. It's not clear--well, you do say 'Awful to Awesome'--but it's possible you mean that even the lowest ranked movies here are still pretty good. I did tend to agree with the top half. How anybody can distinguish, say, #13 from #5 or #23 is beyond me--art is not a number, but it's no biggie. Impressive that the age/era did not seem to bias your judgment. I need to see a lot of these and that may well change my mind. I've heard about Marty forever but haven't been able to see it yet . .

Couldn't agree less about The English Patient. I went to see it five times in the theater and was profoundly moved each time And I would put The Greatest Show on Earth last. No quarrel with The Apartment as number one - very great film. I would have picked Saving Private Ryan for that year but I agree the Shakespeare in Love is a fine film.

So maybe it's early, but where would you now rank Everything Everywhere All at Once? And may you get through all the people who's gonna ask the same thing.
