A Word on Westerns

2 жыл бұрын

John Wayne revisited classic movie RED RIVER territory in 1972 with another cattle drive movie, THE COWBOYS. Duke’s character is about to start moving the herd when his drovers quit to go hunt for gold and he’s left with a group of very young boys for the drive. The film veers from adolescent pranks to a violent rite of passage for the boys.
Unlike many of Duke’s later films, it is not a Batjac Production with the regular cast of characters in front of, and behind, the camera. THE COWBOYS was an A+ western directed by former actor Mark Rydell and was filled with surprises. One of them being Wayne’s brutal murder at the hands of a band of rustlers led by “Longhair” Bruce Dern. When the youngsters set out for retribution for the murder of their beloved father figure, the film’s very dark and violent climax surprised audiences.
For the young actors, many of them Jr Rodeo champions, the film was a wonderful opportunity to see and learn from the talented cast and crew. Hollywood actors A Martinez and Robert Carradine joined Rob Word for a special edition of A WORD ON WESTERNS to celebrate the film’s 50th anniversary. Find out what they learned on location and how emotional the death of John Wayne’s character was for them.
THE COWBOYS seems to get more respect and fans as time passes. Join “Cimarron” and “Slim” as they remember a classic in this conversation recorded April 29, 2022.
Also discussed are the series LONGMIRE, KUNG FU and the short lived TV series, THE COWBOYS.

I was one of those folks who have had ambivalent feelings about John Wayne as an actor, until The Cowboys. I still can't get over how fine and real he is in the movie. For me, it is his best performance. His performance is moving before he even leaves his ranch. I also became a life-long fan of A Martinez after this film. I'll watch him in anything. I was glad to see Robert Carradine and to find out he is quite funny and charming. I like him in cowboy movies and I wish there were more to watch. I especially appreciate how y'all honored David Carradine by speaking well of his talent and humor. I felt Robert's love and appreciation for his brother. Such a fine interview. Thank you for honoring one of my favorite films. A very real classic.

Bruce Dern said in a interview about 25 years ago that the famous fight scene he had with John Wayne was so physical that he got injured in the process. He said Duke was so much bigger and stronger than he was he ended up in a back brace for six weeks after the film. "He really thumped me" Dern said

If you haven't already I suggest an interview with Clay O'Brien. As a boy he was already a cowboy and starred in two John Wayne movies (Cahill and The Cowboys), was the boy Mark with James Garner in One Little Indian and several other westerns. He eventually quit movies to do rodeos full time and is a champion many times over in that sport.

I remember when COVID hit and Netflix gave a free month out to try it. I looked around and nothing interested me at all until I hit on "Longmire". That show was incredible and A. Martinez was one of the best characters on that show. Great writing and acting and I watched all six seasons within two weeks and cancelled Netflix. I would love to hear Robert Carradine talk about his father because seldom does anyone talk about him, and he was in so many great movies and bad ones too.

Mr. Word, your interviews are unparalleled. Would love to see your style and substance replicated in other areas of interest, but alas, one has but a single lifetime to hone one’s craft. Honestly, I’d written off “Hollywood” as a hopeless cesspool. I stopped watching new releases entirely because they were more often soul robbing than enriching. With the advent of streaming, I’ve experimented more, but I hit the stop button on 90% of the content within 15 minutes. But, your talks are always excellent and have me wanting to dig deeper into the filmography of your guests. You have a knack for shutting out the deafening roar of Hollywood’s incessant pandering and letting thoughtfulness and sweet insights come to the fore. Your guests trust you and you honor them with your deep knowledge of their contributions. And they respond by opening up their hearts and sharing memories that would be otherwise lost to time. How refreshing to witness three Hollywood professionals reminiscing about the things that matter in a genuine, non-affected way. By virtue of their open and gracious personalities they honored the Duke’s memory superbly. Not a snarky note to be heard - how touching… and rare.

Nice! - Our movie palace was about 25 years old by the time this movie played. I'd be 'Drafted' not long after and when I came back the 'Majestic Theater' where i had seen most of the Movies in my life was split into two screens, then became an xxx-rated theater, and finally sort of died into a Used Clothing Store. ...The new Mall had two TINY little theaters with horrible acoustics and bad seats. EARTHQUACK took up 1/3 of the theater and when they used the system as cheap as that place was build, I really did worry that the building would come down. .... I probably shouldn't say this, but 'The Cowboy and The Shootist' were probably the last GREAT Westerns I can remember. The ERA of SUPERSTAR Westerns seemed to have died with John Wayne. I could name you a couple of Westerns I thought were GREAT after, but very few in what I'd call 'The Classic Presentation.'

Great getting these two together. Wonderful remembrances from both. Talking about Wayne and meeting him for the first time, Roger Ebert spoke of his experience meeting him on the set of The Green Berets for an interview, Wayne sticking his catchers mitt sized hand out in greeting saying, "Hi, I'm Duke Wayne". And Ebert totally awe struck and nearly speechless in his presence barely able to get it out, saying simply "I know".
@dukecraig2402

The best "meeting John Wayne" story I ever read was from an actual Green Beret who met him at Ft Bragg when they came to film the movie, the guy had already done 2 tours with Special Forces in Vietnam and was back at Bragg as part of the training cadre there, this will be a bit paraphrased but it went like this; When I first heard that John Wayne was coming to Bragg to make a film about us I thought "Oh great, just what we need, a man who's never heard a shot fired in anger in his life and he's gonna make a movie about US? The Green Beret!?!?! Well he better hope I don't run across him cause I'll give him a piece of my mind he'll never forget". Several weeks later I heard a commotion in the hallway outside of my office and when I stepped out into it to see what it was I was standing face to face with none other than John Wayne himself, he stuck his hand out and said "HI, I'm John Wayne (as if he needed an introduction) it's a pleasure to meet you", after two weeks of sitting around thinking about all the things I was going to say to him to tell him off if I ever got the chance he was such an imposing figure standing there in front of me my mind was a total blank, all I could think to do was shake his hand and like a little kid stumble over my words saying "Yes Mr Wayne, of course Mr Wayne, it's a pleasure to meet you Mr Wayne". After shaking his hand and making a complete idiot out of myself stumbling all over my words the way I did I spun around and walked back into my office and sat down at my desk and said to myself "Anyone who ever thinks they're gonna tell John Wayne off is in for a real eye opener when they stand face to face with him".

Thanks for another good one, Rob! I'm reminded that I started watching the soap opera that A was in because Harry Blackstone (Jr.) was in it for a week or two. We didn't know each other well, but I guess you could loosely call us "friends." I just knew I had seen this guy, A, before. It was right near the beginning of the whole VHS thing. A buddy told me that A was one of "The Cowboys," and made a bootleg copy of the film for me. Sure enough, that WAS the guy! Really good movie. I mean, REALLY good. Those kids sure pulled off their scenes. Even the non-actors. I'm not sure that Duke's death was a great idea, but it sure worked.

Excellent interview Rob. You deserve a special award because you bring back all the old movies like no one else. The Cowboys should've got an Academy. I'm sure they weren't Conservatives so they didn't care about John Wayne, but there were more than a few he should've got. A Martinez has been a favorite ever since The Cowboys. Longmire- I watched it twice then my brother & his wife came down & I had to show it to them!

A WOW!! What a get together this interview was Rob. Like kids getting together remembering their lives as crossed paths when they’re in their elderly life. Cross, go on, cross and then later try to remember the memories. The Cowboys was a great Duke film w/a whole cast of young western actors coming up. Bruce Dern was a great actor from the first time I saw him. It was like he was born for acting. Tho to see Duke so violently taken down at the end was out of his character for a film. Yet, who else could do it that good? Thanks much Rob. 👍🤠

The discussion about Robert playing the Vivaldi concerto (a personal favorite) and Rydell's choice to use it in the film, I found to be the most compelling part of the conversation. The John Williams score was also magnificent, but that Vivaldi piece so beautifully captured the delicate wonder of children (and the audience as they took in the scene) having life-defining moments as they grow up. A Martinez' recognition of the awesome gravity of the moment and the way Rydell used it did elevate the movie in a transcendent way. I was 14 when I saw the film with my dad and brother. Not until I saw "One flew over the Cuckoo's nest" was I as affected by a movie as much as The Cowboys. I always thought this was John Wayne's finest performance, even including True Grit. He was an aging rancher, with an aging wife, abandoned by his ranch hands and facing desperate circumstances; as believable as it gets. The bigness of the movie came from the story, not the star...it was just wonderful and I'll always treasure it...

Love your interviews. The Cowboys gets better every time I watch it. Watching this made me like it even more. Bruce Dern played a masterful part in this movie. Too bad folks hold it against him. I'm not sure the casting could have been any better. Thank you, Rob.

@@AWordonWesterns Same here. One of the great pleasures of watching this movie, is to hear that great voice that Roscoe Lee Brown had. The first time I watched this movie--probably about1973 or so? he just stood out from most. I wish he had been in more than what I have seen him in.

You still see 'Longmire for Sherriff' ' bumper stickers around Santa Fe. My wife & I were avid viewers. Las Vegas NM, was where they shot the office scenes. The door that leads up the stairs to the Sherriff's office is like a historical marker. It still says "Sherriff's Dept. ' with "Walt Longmire Sherriff ". The city loved it. And, the Santa Clara Pueblo Casino in Espanola, where A was in charge is the real deal. They're doing well. Looks as good in person as it did on the show. What a treat this was. First really noticed A in 'Pow Wow Highway.' A great one too. Thank You Rob.

Longmire, reminded me of a TV series I saw as a kid, can't remember much of the storyline, but the theme tune and lead actor are (to me unforgettable) Cades County?

As is always the case a great episode. The primary focus being the Cowboys and John Wayne were great but what make it exceptional is the asides between Martinez and Carradine. A true conversation took place between the three of you, bringing up nuggets of information that were previously unknown, to me at least. This conversation was simply entertaining from being to end. It ended to fast, but that's a given, with your ability to bring the best out of your guests remembrances.

Wow! Thankyou Rob. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant . Another one of my favourites Rob, Bruce Dern's character scared me. I so felt for the kids against this monster. It is so sad that John Wayne's character dies toward the latter part of the movie. A very well produced picture, that we've all come to expect from John Wayne films. Thank you Rob & kind regards from Adelaide, South Australia.

Superb interviews! Glad to see this and delighted to see the way these two men get along off the COWBOYS set. You do your homework when it comes to knowing movies and the men and women who put those movies together. Thank you very much! And thanks to A Martinez and Robert Carradine. (P.S. When I had a Land Rover parts business in San Diego in the 1970s & 1980s, Chris Carradine was a customer of my business. At that time Chris was a male model.) Long live John Wayne!
