Budget honey. You think films nowadays would waste their budget for a mere dress.

Hollywood has a bad reputation with corsets. Between not getting them properly fitted, trying to squeeze down skinny actresses who had nothing to squish instead of paddling them out as was done historically, and the ultimate sin of putting on a corset against bare skin instead of over a chemise, I'm not surprised Emma Watson refused to wear one. However because she didn't wear a corset, she couldn't handle the petticoats needed to give the dress the right length and shape.

Exactly like, the corset is what makes heavy skirts ok to wear since it spreads the weight over the hips instead of all at the waist! But no, Hollywood has to mess up corsets so badly that it’s actually justifiable to not want one from them, which then makes it near impossible to handle the skirt they want. If they had just given her a well-fitting corset that was worn correctly and padded instead of being tight-laced, then she could’ve worn a much fuller skirt and they wouldn’t have had to CGI it. Such a simple answer to most of their problems and they still gotta swerve to solve it in the worst way possible smh

Properly made corsets (even though the movie was in the 1700s and she'd be wearing stays, the precursor to corsets, instead) should NOT be uncomfortable at all. She literally ruined the costuming entirely because she wanted to publicly make a statement by not wearing any support-wear under the dress; which really shows.

But she took it the wrong way and went to the media all “look how they are trying to treat me”. I wear a corset and it is so comfortable I can breath and my back is supported. There is a little change in movements like how I bend down because of how the boning acts but nothing crazy. Just moved in wood pellets with it on with no problem.

A dress made more similarly to the original would likely be made of velvet with a few petticoats over a hoop, and would need a corset or stays to hold the shape of the dress and evenly distribute the weight of it. However, because she absolutely REFUSED to wear any kind of proper supportive garment, they couldn't. They were so worried about making sure Emma Watson was in the movie so they could throw her name around for marketing that they let her get away with pretty much anything.

(and most corsests were tailor made for the person to match their body for the best support for the other clothes not just to make them look skinny)

The director might have wanted it to be darker after seeing the finished shots or for additional contrast. Bringing up (or down) the saturation is done all the time in post production.

What was her damn problem? I wore a corset for ten hours a day working at a Dicken's Faire for years and it was one of the most comfortable things ever. Get a properly fitted corset and you will never have back pain. If you are doing a period piece you need to dress for the period!

Granted I’m not a skilled actor nor am I educated in fashion. But I wore a corset under my wedding dress (and it was put on me by a professional) and that shit HURT (they even slightly loosened it for me and it was still painful). It was very hard to breathe and even after they took it off my torso felt out of place for hours. Maybe other women have had better experiences but I personally hated it and can understand why someone would decline to wear it.

As a person who wears a properly fitted corset, doesn't tight lace, and also has layering underneath it- corsets can be uncomfortable. Especially when you're wearing them and you're doing a lot of physical activity as well. Exactly, as someone who loves historical fashion it really annoys me how people percieve corsets. Tightlacing wasnt common, it was basically the modern equivalent of wearing shapewear/butt pads/etc. Only reserved for very special occasions/usually only used by very rich fashionable women. Back then, women even wore corsets to work in fields. It actually helped support the back like a back brace does now. The whole thing was used more like a bra than shapewear. So when actresses blindly say "corsets are a symbol of the patriarchy" and refuse to wear them on set, thats like refusing to wear a bra. A lot of womens fashion/beauty practices can be traced back to "the patriarchy", but like... emma watson still wore makeup, a dress, heels, had her hair done, etc. So why are corsets the big issue?

And all this effort it shows, the final result is impeccable! Belle have one of the most iconic Disney dresses and the live action totally botched cause Emma Watson couldn’t be bothered doing her research about corsets but hey, Belle is a “bookish girl” and she was trying to keep it real to what the character would… by making a totally uninformed decision.

CGI stands for "computer generated image." Color correction nowadays is on computers and thus CGI, but 3D animation is also CGI. Two different ways to alter the picture using computers.

People rlly don’t perceive corsets in a positive light. Back then when people wore corsets, the corsets were tailored and fitted to each customer. Nowadays if you buy a corset on like Amazon, it’ll probably be uncomfortable bc it needs to be tailored to YOUR body. And when the corset is made right, then it’s rlly comfortable. Corsets were to provide structure and support, so think of it as a superior bra lol. So it’s not corsets being bad in general, but companies that sell corsets MAKING them bad (bc you need to manufacture a lot). Sorry for the essay lol

@@droth1031That was one of my biggest problems with Beauty and the Beast. Emma sounded like a Vocaloid, and not even a particularly well-tuned one. Compare that to Halle, who played around with the original performance and barely used any. The remake of The Little Mermaid was mid, but the music was leagues better. (Except for Scuttle. Cinderella had a surprising amount of real stuff they used in the movie, most of the cgi was limited to the transformation and fairy godmother segments and some of the animals although many were real. It’s very impressive the amount of work they put into the movie if you gm watched the behind the scenes

Costume designers are unionized, but CGI artists are not. So it does turn out cheaper, because Disney can just fully exploit, underpay and literally abuse their CGI artists

For Beauty and the beast, the actress refused to wear a corset which is why they heavily cgi her dress. She was misinformed about corsets.

@@twit9129 bc the corset isn’t restrictive it gives structure so u can add more pieces. It doesn’t make an hourglass, u add padding to the hips and butt to do that and he dress would look fuller as a result

Halle Bailey actually wore two corsets. There is the one with Ariel’s undergarments, and the outer one over the dress. Emma Watson is a just pain to work with. It is why she has been essentially blacklisted from Hollywood. No one wants to deal with her diva behavior anymore, because she does not have the talent to back it up.

i believe the reason is that Emma didnt want to use a corset. A heavier dress needs a corset to keep the weight well distributed through the body, thats the main reason people wore corsets and stays, to hold the clothes and support the body. But todays perception of corsets is that theyre mainly to look skinnier and therefore an oppresive tool, which made it so Emma and Disney wanted to stay away from them to propel their feminist-Bella vision. A damn shame in my mind, since corsets dont have to be anti feminists and have a pretty long story of being actually hated by men themselves because corsetry was a female dominated industry that allowed independency to women

@@maca76 I don't know about that, how are corsets supposed to support the skirt? There are petticoats and such for that.

@@EvaLoVerde yes petticoats and criolines give fullness to skirts, but those are usually attached to the corset, so the weight gets evenly distributed allowing for bigger and heavier skirts, like imagine holding a heavy bag in one of your shoulder vs two, you could hold a big skirt with only your hips or use your back and abs muscles too. Not only that the corset offers support to those same muscles by keeping a right posture and supports breast tissue like a bra.

A corset is essentially a backbrace that; as @Macarena mentions, distributes the weight of the skirts and underskirts. All while providing bust and back support. Corsets are still used for certain spine problems and are excellent for very large busted women.

for the record, emma watson personally designed the dress herself, the one that she wore in the movie.

I went from disliking Emma (because of the nonsense about corset) and dress to outright hating it and Emma when I learned SHE designed it. She overstepped. She's an actress, not a designer, and the ugly dress is the proof of that.
