JOSE RAMON JAUREGI is the third generation of a family of Axe makers, who funded their workshop 80 years ago in Urnieta. Today, Jose Ramon is the last axe maker in the Baswue Country, and he continues to work in the same workshop where he learnt his craft.
THE AXE
Thoughout history, axes have played an important role in Euskal Herria, both in everyday life and in the betting world, starting with three piece axes, at a time when it was difficult to find steel. Over time axe making practices evolved while then being made of two pieces, nomadays, they are entirely made of stee, in one piece.
In this work, we will discover how a two piece axe created, the oldest manufacturing process known by Jose Ramon, the last active axe maker in the Basque Country.

The world will be poorer if tradition and craftsmanship like this disappears. Well done sir, for a lifetime of hard work. Beautiful.

What a great film. Thank you so much to the maker, but moreover to the mastersmith Jaun Jauregi for his generosity in allowing his work and wonderful words to be documented. Admittedly it took me an hour to watch the video as I kept having to rewind the fast subtitles. I must lean euskara! Maybe then ask to be a helper. I wonder what became of the handle craftsman too, bless him. Eskerrik asko from West Yorkshire, UK. Thom

Euskal aizkora munduko onena!

Stunning. I purchased one of these axes finally after a long search and now after watching this incredible video I have even more excitement and respect for the fine piece of craftsmanship that is on its way to me for use on the Grand Mesa where I find myself enjoying the natural world. Excellent documentary. I appreciate all the effort and time that was placed here.

I have 4 Basque Axes. I’ve Tung oiled all the handles with multiple sun baked coats. No head movement and beautiful rock solid beech handles. I’ve felled, limbed, and bucked quite a few trees with them and they’re great. Straight bit for pine and curved for hardwood. Subtitles were way too fast. No point having them. Should just slow scroll or dub over English translation.

Good points! Also shorter length blades, cut better wider edges on axeheads which are better for soft wood. I'm 40 years old and I was relying on my old axes, until know that I have to get one. Trees here are medium size rock solid Olive trees mainly, that's also the firewood we all use here. What works better for you on really hard wood?

I don't feel that these are good axes for a culture not raised with them. I personally bought two: if you buy this axe epoxy the head in place. When I got my two they were in too hard to get off until I used them, then one head slid halfway outward and the other slid down and slid all the way down, slicing me good in the process. After five stitches I found out that allot of folks shove or wrap various things in and around the head for safety.

Hello again Robert. For any reason you continue hating these type of axes. Taking in account the conversations we have had in other videos I'm sure you have never used this type of axes. But let's give you another oportunity to show you are not lying again. Have you got any visual evidence to back what you have told here?

I own 8 or 9 of these axes, I use them extensively for splitting all types of soft and hard woods, I've never had a single issue such as you describe and I've never considered epoxy to hold the head in place or anything else for that matter

I didn't mean to offend anyone who enjoys these axes. I will reiterate that mine did however need some electrical tape or epoxy. When you're raised with American style axes in a rural area with limbing and splitting to be done that slippery head can be as dangerous as an American axe without a wedge. If these axes were produced 100% American style I would sing there praises as much. The quality of materials and workmanship is head and shoulders above any production axe made in the last 80 years.
