The M1918 BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) is an iconic American firearm that has been used in numerous conflicts throughout history. It was first introduced during World War I as a portable automatic rifle that could provide suppressive fire against enemy troops. The BAR was designed by John Moses Browning, one of the most prolific gun designers in American history, and it quickly became a favorite among American soldiers.
The BAR proved its worth on the battlefield, and it continued to be used in conflicts throughout the 20th century, including World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. It was favored by soldiers due to its reliability, accuracy, and the fact that it could be fired on automatic mode. It was also light enough to be carried by a single soldier, making it an ideal weapon for mobile troops.
Today, the M1918 BAR remains a popular collector's item and is still used by some military and law enforcement agencies around the world. Its unique design and historical significance make it a must-have for any gun enthusiast or history buff. Whether you're a collector, a shooter, or just a fan of American history, the M1918 BAR is a piece of equipment that you won't want to miss out on.

My grandfather carried a BAR in Korea. He absolutely loved it. Whenever he talked about it hed always say how many times ir saved his life and his buddies. He was a Marine Heavy Weapons specialist and would launch S & D missions over the DMZ. He also used 50 cals, 105 recoiless rifles and Mortars. He also said when you fired the 105 youd have to pack it up as fast as you could because the North Koreans or Chinese would fire mortars at you as quickly as they could aim them.

My grandfather was a BAR gunner with the 1st Marines on Okinawa, where after 45 days he was wounded. He got the BAR because he was the strongest man in his squad, being a farm boy from Kansas. On the LST over to Okinawa, he had a carpenter make and install a pistol grip on the BAR. From the pacific by HBO, his unit was roughly a couple hundred yards from Sledges character. Besides a hunting .22, for the rest of his life he despised firearms from what he saw and was a part of. Great video man, well done and enjoyable

My uncle was a Marine in World War 2 during the island hopping campaigns against the Japanese. He carried a BAR. Of the few stories he told in conversations with his brothers during Thanksgiving (about the only time I ever saw most of my WW2 veteran uncles) this one was repeated a couple of times because it led to the shrapnel he carried around in his hip. The Japanese would focus on his position when they heard the BARs firing cadence. Because of this, my uncle's unit would have him swing wide and he'd get behind some heavy cover or down into a depression in the terrain. He'd fire a couple of short burst and would immediately start taking rounds. His unit would move when this happened. He was injured when a grenade landed next to him. He tossed it aside but still caught some frag off of it. He wasn't evacuated, his company medic just patched him up. He didn't want to leave the group and take a chance of being assigned to something else. It wasn't thought to be too bad and it never caused him any issues but a couple of pieces were found later in an x-ray after the war.

My grandfather was a B A.R gunner with the big RED ONE in ww2 . The only story he told me is when the BIG RED 1 ambushed a German convoy and he was the one to shoot up the first truck to jam the rest of the trucks up. He said that he walked the B.A.R up the passenger side door and blood sprayed all over the windows and the truck came to a stop then the rest of the BIG RED 1 opened up and was killing Germans on wholesale. A mg42 opened up were my grandfather was behind a tree and he said the whole tree started to come apart but it stopped because someone killed the mg gunner. My grandfather was 6'4 and the B.A.R looked like a basic rifle in his hands lol he loved that machine gun and never bitc# about the weight of it, it was his favorite.

People assigned to carry a BAR learned how to shoot it under all combat conditions, most could run and fire and hit their targets and as one who carried a BAR as a Marine I found the problem was more low ammo count per magazine and weak magazines that could not stand much abuse usually found in the field, a small dent could cause the magazine to fail to load the next round. I removed the bipod and the bug out handle, now and again would burn a finger or two when changing positions, but learned to avoid that hazard.

The qualifications according to his platoon commander was “you’re a big tall guy and my BAR gunner was killed yesterday”. He had never fired a BAR. The most important thing he learned was that you fired 20 rounds, moved, then reloaded because the Japanese were trained to kill the BAR gunners at all cost.

Hated the M1 Carbine said it didn't have the put down power of the Garand and it wasn't as reliable. Didn't like war movies that showed troops hugging close to tanks. Said tanks drew a lot of fire and artillrey fire so being close to them wasn't generally the best idea on a battlefield.

What an awesome video! My grandfather was a bar man during his time in WW2 . He carried it almost his entire time in action. He was in the battle of the bulge. I can not even imagine having to carry it . He had it in his closet as long as I can remember. After he passed and my grandma sold the home, we could never find it. Not sure who took it. However I do have all 3 of his 1911’s. Thank you very much for the informative video!

Speaking of the BAR in movies about the 1920's/30's Gangster-era: check out Michael Mann's ''Public Enemies'', where it's featured in a couple of shootouts between the FBI & the gang of John Dillinger. Also, lots of Tommy Gun action in that movie.

Since you reference BAR use in video games, another iconic (read: old) game where the BAR is heavily featured is Day of Defeat and Day of Defeat:Source. It was initially a Half-Life mod, but developed into its own game with a large following of players. Fun game, and a ton of period weapons to play around with on both sides of the conflict.

@@AdministrativeResults ouch, right in the feels. But I guess that tracks. I’m probably as old as your dad. I logged serious hours of league play on DoD back in the day. Great game for small unit tactics, and one of the first to incorporate built in voice chat (though my “clan” quickly stood up our own Teamspeak server.) The map you’re talking about was originally DoD_Charlie, later ported to source as DoD_Strand. It’s a Normandy/Omaha Beach map and a ton of fun to play as a sniper. I apparently know entirely too much useless information about 20 year old games. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. I like your YT channel.

My grandfather lugged one of these across North Africa and up the spine of Italy. He hated the weight of the thing, but said he was thankful to have it as soon as the shooting started. Like a couple other folks here have mentioned, he was the biggest guy in his group (not all that tall - 6'1" - but he had a linebacker's build) and a pretty good shot, so he got picked. Still have the Beretta M1934 he brought home from an Italian officer he killed with his BAR. Thanks for featuring this.

Man its pretty useless not full auto. I bet you its not very far away tho. If we are going semi auto idk why you wouldnt go with a 308 in ar10 platfrom. If you have 66k to spend for an antique historical piece and youre lucky enough its full auto, thats cool, but until we ban the gun bans im not buying. This thing makes quite a more capable gun than a m249 in certain aspects. But both are pretty much overpriced paper weight coffee table ornaments. No one wants to carry a desk ornament into battle its not very 2nd amendment confidence inspiring. You can get a much more useful weapon thats not a desk ornament with an 8 pound trigger pull. That being said, it sure looks iconic. Its cool to get to see a real one shooting full auto. Uts a bummer that part of our human rights is segmented to only the rich thanks to some retards in the 1930s snd some tyrannical jackboots today
