Brother is doing this kind of work and doesn't know the word "splines". Proves you don't have to be very knowledgeable to be good at what you do. Nice work my friend.

lmao reminds me of the time a couple goofballs at work replaced the driveshaft on a work truck an same day 2hrs away from shop, the transmission "went out" after tryin to take off with a loaded trailer. dudes used a sledge to get the splines to slide into the tranny... luckily the driveshaft was all the was dmg'd xD

Little known detail. Dry gaskets or paper gaskets rely on oil to create a seal. The material absorbs the oils and expands. Under the immense clamping force from the two bare metal surfaces when the gasket material attempts to expand and cannot creating a seal. Dry gaskets don't seal, wet ones do.

Pretty looking hub. "Right stuff" will also do in a pinch. Not alot of pressure inside of an axle.

how about removing the plug in the hub and putting some oil in the wheel bearings so they don't run dry to start

You make it look easy, but try it on a brand new Kenworth 680 driver front tandem. You have to spin the rotating drive shaft around until you get the groves to line up with the differential gear box. It's hard work in the sun.

Oh man I see what happened here. I just watched your other video. I see where you lost the outside bearing and the shaft nearly welded itself to your spindle. I know these things because I was an Axle Surgeon for 12 years. I have seen this a hundred times. Let me give you a nickels worth of free advice. Never, and I mean never ever ever spray brake cleaner into your hub or on your bearings. Secondly, you need to do 1 of two things after you re/install a hub. Either fill the hub with oil though that plug on the hub or park the truck on a side incline, replaced hub downhill so that the bearings get flooded with oil. Hub oil is supplied to the bearings by the rotation of the axle shaft as the truck drivers along. The hub has a sump area that remains filled with oil after this happens. However it takes a few miles for this process to start. If your bearings are cleaned with brake cleaner they will not get LUBRICATION before friction and heat will destroy your bearings, usually within 5 miles after a hub/bearing replacement. LUBRICATION IS KEY!!! OIL IS YOUR FRIEND!!! BRAKE CLEANER IS FOR BRAKES!!! DO NOT COMPLETELY DEGREASE ANY BEARING EVER WITHOUT SOAKING IN OIL BEFORE YOU INSTALL THEM!!! Sorry about the yelling or any smart ass remark I may have made. I'm just real passionate about wheel bearings! Hope this info helps you or someone else.

This is my method and it works I've done all 4. I swapped out from stud Pilot to hub pilot. Prep clean sand decrease obsessively. Right Stuff on spindle and seal rings, Lucas on both bearings, torque to 300 ft lbs. Bob tail and swing multiple hard turns going 10 mph in the truck stop to flood the axle on repair side. That's it. All the seals are good. Except I didn't lube the seal itself for a couple hubs which I would do next time. I had 24.5 rims on worn out 285 low profile. I have another truck in storage and put on the 22.5 with 11r 14 ply. Been trucking on a better ride so far feels much better.

I usually slightly pack the bearings with molly or lithium grease. It helps keep the bearing lubed until oil will get into the hub assemblies. Always top oil off after a swap or service.

@Peter smith i dont squirt oil in there because you are asking for more failure to seal. But it does work. I also never use rtv so there is that. I hadnt been using pro torques because i never knew about them. If you are in a shop that uses them well no shit you will know about them. But when you do everything personally you wont have info like that unless you run across it. Idk who touched you as a child but just because someone does not know doesnt make you better or them worse. They are just uninformed. Do the correct thing and teach them not put them down.

Hmm. I have been a trash truck/ heavy truck mechanic for about years and I haven't used an axle flange gasket in about 30 years since I discovered silicone sealer, and its been about that long since I had a flange leak. To me gaskets are just a leak waiting to happen.

If I've done one I've done hundreds more to be honest on not only my favorite Freightliners but Peterbuilts old Mack Internationals other farm trucks etc with the floater rear ends are you going to put any gear oil in I normally pack some grease in bearings in hub then before putting the axle in pump as much gear oil in before putting the axle in saves time

i tow, and i gotta say picking up an axle with clean hands is nuts to me. today i towed a tandem for 30 minutes with the axle out, no cap but a rag shoved in the hole and a good 1/10 trucks i tow have no oil in there until it heats up, even then it’s full of metal of course. what puzzles me is that it catches once and when you push it in the rest of the way it catches again right before the studs, then it’s extremely hard to push in and down. is there a reason for that?

They were stud pilot studs, older, more rare. It's different than Hub. Stud Pilot rims are harder to come by if you need one on the road. More work to take the wheels off.

Front drive axle, both axle shafts are different lengths. They can only work on the correct side. Rear axle might be the same, I never compared front to rear axle shafts. You mark them with white out if your worried.

That just reminded me of an asshole neighbor I had. He had a one tonne Chev with the full floater rear end. He pissed me off royally one day so I decided to get back at him. I went out late at night and took all the bolts out of both rear axle shafts. Oddly enough he couldn't get to work the next day. Never piss off your mechanic neighbor. Strange things may happen.
