@@southbug27 As a recent escapee from serious back problems, sciatica, I can testify that it was quite the most painful and debilitating experience I have ever had to endure. There is no escape from it, not even lying or sitting down. Walking, or any form of physical activity is impossible. I endured every type of treatment, none of which had any effect whatsoever. I was in total despair. I couldnt do anything, my sex life disappeared, I couldnt play with my children, I was in a complete state of depression. I was on the cusp of surgery, the last resort, which is not recommended due to the risks involved, but it is what I had opted for. 10 days before the surgery, it cleared up, on its own. This mans condition is something different, something worse I think, and my sympathies are with him completely. When I see old people, on a walking frame or using a stick, bent over, in constant and relentless pain, my heart goes out to them, because I think I have some understanding.

She was theologically and politically liberal back then, but as a therapist, I find her work on shame very helpful. I’m sure she’s had to turn to the dark side to keep her position in academia, or she’s just become more liberal in the last few years, as I’ve become more conservative.
