The AYANEO Air is the latest handheld PC to enter a crowded market, but it has some pretty cool distinguishing characteristics: it's ultra small for what it can do, and features a beautiful OLED panel with 1080p resolution. Let's take a deep dive look at this handheld and see if it's worth the $500+ asking price. Additionally, is it supposed to be a "Steam Deck killer" or a "Switch killer"? I can never keep them straight.

One of the things a different review mentioned that I don't think you did is that both the top and bottom USB-C port can be used for power. This to me is awesome, and actually a really big deal that vastly raises the usability of this thing. It had to be difficult to pull off but it's going to be worth it. You're going to want to use this thing plugged in a lot, there's just no getting around that. But you gotta think about it not just in terms of specs, but in how you're actually gonna use it. When I think about where and how I'm going to use it, having the option of running the cable either above or below is one of those things I didn't realize I really wanted until I found out I could have it.

It's a shame as the build quality, oled screen and controls are awesome. Willing to wait for my ultimate Windows handheld which has clam shell, 7 inch oled screen, large battery at least 3 hours on demanding games, ergonomic gaming controls with keyboard and trackpad, decent thermals and build quality, under 500 grams, AMD 5825U or similar, basically a GPD Win 2 upgrade.

Your description is pretty close to the Ayaneo Flip. I don't think OLED is going to be on the cards anytime soon for a display that size, unless people would settle on the Switches 720p panel, but I don't even think companies would even entertain the idea of including a panel with that low of a resolution. Personally, I would love a 720p OLED panel, as I mostly plan on playing all games at 720p to conserve battery life and performance anyway.

It seems like PC gaming basically just requires playing near an outlet. Essentially if you need something portable that you can take to different outlets, then aya neo air makes sense. The switch tegra chip is optimized to be power efficient, so it is more of a practical portable gaming solution. I was looking for something to use with my nreal air glasses, and even though switch requires a dock and an adapter just to output to them, you don't need an outlet nearby to play.

I would actually love to know how well the battery lasts when playing strictly 7th console generation games the correct settings and lowered tdp. I would hope those older games wouldn't drain the battery as quickly because they don't require beefy hardware these days. This has the potential to be a fantastic 7th to 8th gen handheld. Oh and just to clarify I meant 7th gen native pc ports, not emulation.

This is actually a good point, playing with switch made me realized I don't really enjoy playing modern AAA games on the go, nor online competitive games for the obvious wifi issues, find myself playing lower spec simpler games on portable mode so older pc games/ports could be a good idea, right off the bat im thinking The Italian Job, midtown madness and maybe quake

I back the IGG last week only because the AYN Loki launch is looking iffy. I do feel that I'm overpaying for what is likely to be a less capable device but it's very likely to ship a lot sooner. Besides having to plug in more often, this ticks most of my boxes. Thanks for the real world gaming tests. This does all I plan on using it for pretty well, which is indie to mid-tier graphic titles from the Game Pass PC library. You mentioned being able to add GOG and Epic Games to the front end launcher. I assume you can add Xbox app titles as well, right?

I really think steam deck mini would come in handy for people with less money and also doesn't want that much power out of a steam deck and just want to carry around something with the power or more of the loki pro possibly with their release of the steam deck 2. There should be two tiers of devices for those that want smaller more mobile kind of pocket feel with the lower price tag and those that wants the big brother then they'd go for the steam deck 2. What you guys think? You think that Steam Deck Mini would be a thing for valve to produce?

PHEW there are two USB C ports, that was troubling or maybe I was thinking of the LOKI and AYN line up that may not have a top USB C port. YOU NEED AT LEAST TWO especially if you're not offering full USB A ports. I also make this argument with Android Tablets as well, they should offer two.

The AYANEO team were looking into that. The issue is that OLED panels that aren’t already mass produced cost a lot more to use or develop. Chances are the 5.5” 1080p display they’re using actually cost less than using a 5.5” 720p screen because 1080p being more prevalent due to smartphones.

These companies need to focus on making ARM-based handhelds with Linux (just like the emulation handhelds) instead of x86 handhelds which are power-hungry. And of course there needs to be more games for Linux+ARM.

What I don't like about those consoles (with the exception of the Steam Deck) is that the controls are not symmetrical. Why can't they keep both joysticks at the top or in the middle, and both 4-buttons in the middle or on the top? The lack of touchpad also makes this less usable than the Steam Deck. I honestly wish we would see more handheld PCs, and I'm surprised that only Lenovo has announced a handheld PC so far, from the mainstream laptop manufacturers. The first versions are excused if they have mistakes, by the customers, if they are more affordable (with pre-orders being how they are) than the Steam Deck. And there could be thicker handheld PCs with more battery, more cooling, and more things in general, like, for example: a 3.5 inch SSD, a folding keyboard which stays in place like on a laptop, webcam + camera which can rotate on 2 or 3 axis (pitch, yaw, and optionally roll), maybe a second-screen addon which folds onto the main screen and keyboard, and maybe the option to use flat joysticks (with micrometer or touchpad mechanism, with two sliders (instead of analog triggers) moving the joystick without changing it's angle around a pivot, which is also lower profile, which would also allow for zero-ing the joysticks on the fly, for when you change the springs or for when you want the screen to keep rotating one way steadily, like to orbit around a place while you're AFK), and definitely a lot more ports (including a combo headset+microphone port and 2 separate ports for headphones and microphone, allowing 2 people to listen to the same or different things, especially with 2 screens, especially with a separate controller connected to the handheld PC). *Edit:* It must also have full Linux drivers, and optionally also Windows 10 drivers. And I'm fully expecting to see smartphones running Linux having joysticks (the flat version I mentioned or the conventional version pushed inwards to not be broken inside a pocket), 4-buttons, index-finger button and middle-finger spring-loaded slider instead of analog triggers, optionally also touchpads, added to each side of the screen, which to be marketed as Handheld Gaming PCs, even if they are only useful for emulating older games, because if it can run SteamOS or WineSapOS or a lighterweight distro with all the necessary software, then people would still be able to play lighterweight PC games on them, or even use them as laptop replacements, because you only need a charging brick o use them, no mouse needed, no desk or lap space needed, and which can be used while walking (unlike a laptop, for example). I expect the price for such Linux Handheld PC Smartphones to be starting from $100, maybe less, depending on the processing power it has and the drivers and customization options. I'm also expecting gamers to embrace 540p with integer-scaling to 1080p.
