Fun fact: This Series was initially only supposed to be a One off episode, maybe stretched out to a 2 part, with a $450,000 Kickstarter set up to fund the Episode. The Cast of Critical Role were skeptical they’d even reach the goal within a 45 day period. Within the WEEK, the Critters (The Fan Base for Critical Role) ended up *shattering* the Goal and ended up gathering over $10,000,000 worth for the show, enabling them to create Season 1. The cast reaction is pretty hilarious, if you want to look it up. Season 2 was greenlit almost immediately. Never underestimate the Critical Role community.

Someone has probably mentioned this before, but the reason they are called Vox Machina (Voice Machine) is due to all of them being professional Voice Actors (Matt Mercer, the DM/Narrator even voices Jotaro Kujo in the English Dub of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)

Notice that the hand Grog chops off at the start, he keeps and puts in the bag of holding... that is the hand that the dragon later sees under the pile of rubble when it thinks it kills the party. Great continuity. oh, and as everyone knows, even without the rap... Scanlan fuuuuuuuuuuucks lol

The children who died were actually voiced by children of the voice actors too, which adds even more to that scene.

I love all the "oh no"'s as you recognize the house, but knowing it gets SO MUCH worse to have the boy die in their arms. They turn everything to 11 on this show! Laughs and lows. Hope you enjoy the series, especially with season 2 coming soon!

Non spoiler but the first two episodes are a prestream recaps and three through eight are the first arc. Yes the actors are playing their own characters(they are all voice actors after all lol) and Matt Mercer, their dm and fellow voice actor, plays the big badof this season and various cameos (this episode its the man hanging the notice Scanlan... waters the shoe off.) The cameos I call hidden mercers cause they're drawn to look like him too even if they don't speak. But If you've watched anime odds are you've heard most of the actors. Grog/Roy Mustang(fma) Vex/kid trunks and Abby from last of us 2(and Lust from fma I believe) Vax/Garra (naruto) Percy/ the flash (the injustice video games) Pike/Ellie (the last of us) Matt Mercer (McCree overwatch) And that's just what I know off hand

Yooo i started watching these like a month ago thanks to a friend, since i didn't know they made an animated series of their d&d campaign, and now suddendly you star reacting to them, that's so cool, even cooler knowing season 2 is coming in a couple of weeks from now

A breakdown of the party (yes, the song helps, but here's the full thing). Vax'ildan (Vax for short) is the male half-elf rogue with the hot voice. Vex'ahlia (Vex for short) is the female half-elf ranger with her animal sidekick Trinket the Bear. Vax and Vex are twins. Easy way to tell their names apart is think mAle and fEmale or Adam and Eve. A and E. Grog is the goliath barbarian (due to copyright they have to go with the generic "half-giant", but he's 100% a goliath). Keyleth is the half-elf druid. Scanlan Shorthalt is the gnome bard. Pike Trickfoot is the gnome cleric. Finally there is Percival Fredrickstein von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III (Percy for short), the human gunslinger and inventor of firearms in this world. He's technically a fighter in D&D as the original campaign had actually began life as a Pathfinder private home game before switching to D&D 5E when they started streaming it. This was back in 2015, well before the artificer class was created, so they had to try and homebrew a Pathfinder style gunslinger into 5E for him, he'd absolutely be an artificer if they did it now. The party's name, Vox Machina, is Latin for "sound machine", a reference to how all the players are professional voice actors. A far better name than what they called themselves during the private home game, that being the SHITS (the Super High Intensity Team). They changed it to sound more respectable for their livestream audience. Unrelated note to the show but since you brought it up, Game of Thrones had some dongs in it. Not a lot, but a few showed up. Back to the show. The random guy Scanlan peed on is voiced by Matt Mercer, the game's DM. He pops up a few times in random roles because after all, he voiced all the NPCs as the DM anyways. While the belch Vox Machina announced themselves with came from Grog in the show, it was actually recorded from Laura Bailey, Vex's voice/player who is legendary for her mighty burps on the show. She's actually scared the people next to her with some surprise ones on the stream before. Brown armored girl with freckles on the council is Lady Kima, a total badass halfling paladin and one of the more beloved NPCs from the campaign. The Scottish guy is voiced by none other than David Tennant, who didn't even need to read a script to be interested in being in this show. He legitimately was just told about the story of how it came about (details in other comments below, but the gist is the gang wanted to do an animated short and asked for some money on kickstarter, it was blown out of the water by the fan response and hit their goal in 45 minutes and ultimately reached over $11 million by the end of the 45 day kickstarter, funding 10 full episodes instead of the single 20 minute special they planned.) He was just told the story of what happened and realized that if that was how the fans showed their love and support for this project, it had to be something special and he wanted to be a part of it even in a small capacity. The kids that they meet in the village are actually played by Liam O'Brian's (Vax) son and Sam Riegel's (Scanlan) daughter. The dragon they're facing is an adult blue dragon, and if memory serves the party was roughly around level 7 when they did this quest in their home game (they started streaming around level 9). Yeah, the kid dying in their arms is dark as fuck. Keep this in mind, Matt Mercer *does not play around*, if the story is going to get dark then he charges full steam into it. There is no shying away from the darker consequences in either the game or show. Glad you guys enjoyed the episode, this show is amazing and definitely worth pushing forwards with. You're actually perfectly on time too. You have 11 more episodes of season 1 and then on the 20th we are getting season 2 releasing in 3-episode batches each week, so you've got a good chunk of content to go through if you keep going with this show.

I didn't realize when watching this the first time, but the reason Keyleth freezes in the dragon fight is due to one of a dragon's special abilities. It causes literal fear in a target, and you either end up frozen in fear or running away in terror.

So glad y'all are covering this show, gets me hyped up for season 2

This was quiet unexpected. As someone who spent the 2000h hours watching critical role, the animated show is an entirely different thing from the streams. I don’t really know what the experience is like for a non-streamwatcher, because for me it felt like pure fanservice, but someone who doesn’t know….wouldn’t know. Hope you will like it anyway.

They actually originally planned to show scanlan’s junk at the beginning. There was a running gag throughout this campaign about his dick being a perfect cube. They apparently did design it and animate it but were forced to remove it because they would have gotten a higher rating from the parental guidance system. Essentially labeling themselves as porn, so they elected to remove it to avoid that.

This reaction was a delight, looking forward to the rest of the series :D The story only gets better from here.

YESSS I was wondering if you'd watch this after the Legend of Vox Machina! As a small Critter (name of Critical Role fans) myself and bigger TTRPG fan I'm excited for this series. Yes the original players Voice Act the characters (they are all professional VAs that you've definitely heard before! Dont forget that Amazon shows the VAs of characters on screen). There are some Behind the Scenes vids that dont spoil too much and I'd encourage watching them.

I can't even tell how much i've waited for you to start this serie. And for sure, you're gonna love it.

I will say this for the rest of season one, the first two eps are more of a introduction to our rag tag team, after that is when the story cranks up. You're in for a ride.

3:20 the voice actor for Vax there is Liam O'brien, he also did Gaara in Naruto which is one of my favorite roles by him. The narrator at the start and some other character voices are done by Matt Mercer. Critical Role is all professional voice actors so of course they did their DND characters in the anime. Also the guy in glasses, Percy, is made by Taliesin, one of my all time favorite characters by one of the best at creating characters in the team. Percy, Mollymauk, Cadueces, and Ashton, all amazing characters over the span of three campaigns.
