BARAYE was originally written by young Iranian singer/songwriter Shervin in the early days of the recent uprising in which he brilliantly strung together tweets from demonstrators to form the poignant lyrics of what has gone on to become an anthem of the Iranian people in this movement towards freedom.
Translation:
For dancing freely in the streets
For fear when kissing
For my sister, your sister, our sisters
For transforming decayed minds
For the shame of poverty
For longing for a normal life
For the child who picks through garbage and his dreams
For this dictated economy
For this polluted air
For Vali Asr Avenue and it’s dying trees
For the Piruz cheetah and his likely extinction
For the innocent dogs that are banned
For unrelenting tears
For the image of this moment that keeps repeating
For faces full of smiles
For students and their future
For this compulsory heaven
For the brilliant minds imprisoned
For the Afghan children
For these unending “fors”
For all these empty slogans
For the rubble of collapsed houses
For the feeling of tranquility
For the rising sun after long nights
For anxiety pills and sleeplessness
For man, homeland and prosperity
For the girl who wished she were a boy
For woman, life, freedom
For freedom….
