Azerbaijan country, known as the "land of fire", has long been on the list of places for us to explore. We take two weeks to discover the wild and rugged Azerbaijan country, wealthy from oil and rich in history, but only independent from the Soviet Union since 1991, to understand what hidden gems lie outside its glitzy capital city Baku.
Join us as we share our Azerbaijan country road trip experience and find out everything you'll want to know before you come to this fascinating and diverse country.
If you're more of a city person, check out our Baku video here • BAKU, AZERBAIJAN
If you’re interested in the Caucasus and want to share our journey - check out our road trip across Georgia and Armenia.

Thank you so much, I (Phil) genuinely appreciate it when people take time out to comment and I'll take this 🙏 It'd be lovely to have more support, maybe it'll come who knows. I hope you like the Separett as much as we do, if we’re ever in the same proximity give us a shout...always up for meeting like-minded people 😀

@@TheGapDecaders Thanks Phil! I believe we will be heading the opposite way in April, to Sweden and maybe Finland, but you two do so many miles that we'll probably meet up anyway! 😆Already looking forward to that, you have a blast in Morocco!

Good to see you made it to Azerbaijan! Another very informative vlog. Am planning to visit in late May, and will do the trip up to Kinaliq. Was it stressful renting your own car and making the drive....and the roads??
@TheGapDecaders
@TheGapDecaders Жыл бұрын
Hi Brendan, thank you. The rental process was pretty simple, just make sure you've got your original drivers license and passport, we used a local compant "Az Rent" which we booked online, they were much cheaper than the big companies such as Hertz. We'd already spent six months driving in Georgia and Armenia in our truck so the road and driving conditions had become our norm. The only stressful drive is in Baku itself, once out on the open road it’s very quiet but keep the speed down as there’s police and cameras everywhere. If they have a heavy winter, there is a chance you might not get to Kinaliq, even in late May and definitely take advice on road conditions, not just the weather but landslides can close the roads. Otherwise it’s a fabulous drive, have a great trip 😃

Can the off pist roads handle a big overland rig?
@TheGapDecaders
@TheGapDecaders 8 ай бұрын
It's questionable, the whole point of last year's trip was to drive to the Caspian Sea, enjoying the Caucasus slow time in our rig. Georgia and Armenia were fantastic but we actually came away from Azerbaijan thinking it would have been a struggle. Lots of overhanging rocks, many of the high mountain tracks are ever crumbling (mainly due to water damage) and some lure you in by funneling you into a tight track with sheer drop off's with tight bends (difficult for a wheelbase more than 3.8m) and that's without oncoming vehicles. That said, within the countryside and more remote places, there’s lots of old Soviet 4x4 and 6x6 trucks used for logging and aggregates, so if your rig isn’t too big, it's possible. 👍🏻😀

Do you know if the landborders are open for foreigners?
@TheGapDecaders
@TheGapDecaders 6 ай бұрын
Hi Peter, apologies for my late reply. In short no, they remain closed to foreigners however I know one couple who managed to attain a 24hr Transit Visa to Baku port to get the boat onwards. But the process took weeks of calls to embassies and I think they got lucky.

Our aim last year was always to drive to Baku but the land border into Azerbaijan didn’t open, it was meant to open in April, then June, then Sep 2022 in fact it’s still closed to date. We really wanted to see the country so we flew 😀
