I've been using the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra since its release and its gotten two updates now which have dramatically improved the camera system.
I've taken well over 2000 photos at this point and the updates have only improved the S23 Ultra. However, there are still a few issues that Samsung needs to address so in this video we will go over real life examples as well as pixel peep at some images in lightroom to look at those details.
Even though there is improvement, its still not perfect so let me know if you have any questions!
Check out my preset system for editing all photos including images shot on the S23 Ultra azvisuals.com/store

Really nice to find a KZfaqr reviewing the phone/camera system in the same way that I use my Note8 and will be using my s23 Ultra tomorrow when I get it! I do a lot of photo and printing them too. I use the full Adobe CC suite including Lightroom on my phone (love the S-pen for post in Lightroom for masking etc). Thanks for this video! of all the ones out there, this has been the most relevant and most helpful 👍🏿👌🏿. Subscribed!

Yes I do manual adjusting of the exposure slider to get the right amount of shadows and light when taking photos with my s23 ultra. I observed that the default or auto mode tend to over expose the subject.

I totally agreed with you on the overexposure. I didn't realize that I often tune down the exposure when I take photo with S23U. However, I see a lot of users prefer to have slightly overexposed image especially the darker part of the image. People take it as high HDR but it makes the image too flat to my taste.

I love the way you talk and explain the different values in the photos your discussing I'm a novas with picture taking but am addicted to capturing life in a photo. I've never had classes but intuitively follow what you talking about as we're both looking at the photo you select to use. I wish it if (maybe you have) that when your going into settings you could walk us through in a way that is easily followed as when your showing editing the photo. Maybe give reason for the settings you'll choose prior to the snapping the photo. In your exspecanal way of conveying what and why your choosing those settings. Thank you for putting out your wisdom for us to learn.

Camera assistant is great to hear about I'll have to check it out. Yes, the shutter isn't "lagging" the camera has simply assessed the lighting situation and set a slow shutter to let more light in, just like when you use night mode and the phone asks you to hold the camera still until it's done so it can get a proper exposure. This can be bypassed as well by using the pro camera mode but sometimes I find that I can't get as good color and exposure settings as i do if I just let the regular camera use ai (I'm still on S20FE) On a side, it's interesting that you found many of your shots coming "washed out" straight from camera. Samsung has always been known for their vibrancy but maybe they are trying to market harder to photographers and took notes of the popular cinestyle way of shooting/editing seeing as though the images edit nicely which means that all the information is present My theory about the over exposure is simply competition with the apple look. Iphone ai really likes to flatten out exposure by brightening shadows and it has a discernable look geared towards the general user who isn't a photographer

I have been using Note 20 and recently bought S23U, both tend to always overexpose and that's the way it has been since the beginning of Samsung. I always slightly decrease the exposure manually for some shots to give it a better look, like you did.

I just bought the S23 Ultra yesterday. I've been watching lots of videos and can't wait for it to come. My question is are you covering up the lens because they look like they are exposed to dirt and moisture? I saw a video that has a magnetic case with magnetic filters. That sounds like a good resolve for me. I enjoyed your video very much thank you.

Thank you, mate, for another informative video. I'm still confused as to why Samsung keeps duplicating apps. Now we have the Camera assistant, and I'm not sure why they couldn't keep all the settings in one app. Nonetheless, it was a nice video with cool presets, and I appreciate that you're an actual photographer. As an average user, I can say that the additional settings and flat images, as well as the challenge of taking close-up pictures of nature, such as flowers and leaves due to the presence of wind, may give mixed impressions of the S23U.

As the photographer, it's up to YOU to make the image. The camera can't read your mind and just magically know that you want a specific part of the scene exposed a certain way or that you want a specific shutter speed. Claiming something is a "problem" just because it's not what you envisioned in your mind (while also not adjusting the settings yourself or using the appropriate mode) seems misleading to me. I'm not saying this as a Samsung fanboy, but as someone with over a decade of photography/videography experience that understands that the camera is just a tool. Also for future reference, when you want to capture a fast moving subject....use the Burst mode.

That's a nice and honest review. The phone is great, the best of course the almost unbelievable zoom range, especially until 30x the pics are quite usable which is insane. Pro mode, especially compared to older phones, is losing its relevance since you're losing all important software gimmicks like HDR or multi pic stacking instead of just simple long time exposure. What I'm missing, not only with Samsung phones, is using auto modes but with some constant adjustments to your liking. Companies try to make the look of pics fitting to everyone's liking and every situation, one click shoot - but this will never work, never. Buying such an expensive phone I don't want the 'company knows best what's good for me approach' (rather arrogance). I want options, but of course not by doing everything by myself but to change auto mode to my(!) liking. Why is there no option slider to adjust HDR shadow brightening or HDR high light reducing in general?. Why no option slider to adjust color to something individual between insta popup colors and pure cool color DSLR aesthetics in general? Older Samsung at least had a sports mode for shorter shutter speed priority. It's gone! Why? No cam app in the world in auto mode can read my mind, e.g. if I want to take a pic of a little river with water flow smoothed out or crystal sharp. I understand they had to deliver a one-shoot auto experience as most customers are inexperienced, but doing so they are frustrating everyone who knows about foto technology. Why do you have to adjust your light room color scheme afterward? Why aren't we able to do so just out of the cam app itself directly when saving the pics file. It seem all these cam app developers were no photographers at all.

Question: I noticed other KZfaqrs images come out flat as well. My initial reaction was "Perfect! Like a raw photo I'll have more latitude to work with when I go to Lightroom." Then I realized the avg consumer wouldn't like flat curves on their final pics. 1) Does this "flatness" preserve detail in a similar way that a raw does; 2) Does the flatness depend on defaulted outputed file format?; 3) Do you think this is intentional by Samsung??

Hi, I'm just watching your videos now and they are awesome. I am torn between the S23 Ultra and the Google Pixel 7 Pro. I want the best camera phone as I do a lot of hiking and travelling. I have watched many reviews, and I am so confused. If you could pick one, which one would you choose? I know that is a loaded question, but I'm going crazy lol.

If you're just using the phone for point-and -shoot photos and not messing around with advanced settings then go for the Pixel. If you are really into photography and are comfortable adjusting the pro settings then go with the S23 Ultra.

You called out the most painful thing here. The brightness, overly aggressive HDR. It is not classical overexposure - like saturated lights etc, it is more of a HDR thing. It tries hard to get the shot as bright as possible with compromise in dynamics and perceived depth. This annoys me way more than any shutter lag the S23U had. By default when I take photos in auto mode I slide the brightness half way back where it sort of should be as a starting point. Some people like the super bright take on photos, some do not. Samsung should be able to give us a button to chose with. I wouldn't mind having the HDR be modifiable as well, not just on/off. All the criticism aside, it is probably still the most consistent and universal camera phone out in the wild so far.

I have the S22 Ultra. I’ve often thought the photos are a bit overexposed. I’ve recently ordered the S23U. Guess I’ll find out is the S23U is an improvement…

A comment on your zooming in of the storefront in 50 mega.pixel mode at 3 times crop. What the phone does is upscale the image back to 50 megapixels which it obviously is using software to do. Even if you zoom in four times it will still up scale to 50 megapixels which is not ideal. The same is true when you shoot and zoom in in 200 megapixel mode. I think it would be better to shoot with no zoom and then just crop post to avoid the post-processing. Because the upscaling is not really doing a great job

I know everyone is big on the camera on this phone and I enjoy the capabilities it has too, don't get me wrong, but I really am loving the high 256gb to 1tb storage and the customizable S-Pen. I've never had a phone with this must storage space and this is my fist Note like phone so the pen is really cool to me. I'm glad based of your review and vid and comments that the hardware seems to be there just not the software. I wonder if a few tweaks and mass updates could fix this or do you think there is apps on on the galaxy store or Google play that have better support for the hardware/camera?

Samsung needs to step it up in the still photography department. To my eye they still can't keep up with the Pixel. I have the S23U and the P6P, and the Pixel consistently takes much better still photos. Great video!

How come you didn’t use the pro photo for photos. You can try to reduce the blur with that since it’s a manual setting where you can increase the shutter speed. For 200 mp it’s off. My mirrorless does better but then thats a different camera than a phone camera. Still can’t beat my mirrorless regardless. I do have one issue, on the Samsung, it keeps trying to auto edit my photo when I use the regular image and use the expert raw. It ruins it so bad by overexposing it. This is something that needs to be fixed. Wondering if there is a way to turn that off?

Personally I'd buy the pixel. My reasons for that: 1) Better camera (for my taste...more true to life photos with great hdr and a lot of detail, able to capture moving objects much better) 2) Voice dictation is unmatched. If you use voice to text a lot, it's hands down the best. 3) smoother and more fluid UI 4) the phone app features: call screening, Hold for Me and Direct My Call. These features are amazing.

I much appreciate the detailed info on the S23 Ultra--the different ins and outs of squeezing the best shots out of it. I completely agree that it tends strongly to somewhat over-expose. However, I've just discovered something that is helpful to me: when you reduce the exposure, you can lock it by tapping on the same icon/indicator you use to reduce the exposure. The indicator then turns yellow, indicating a lock, and you can continue to shoot at this exposure, avoiding the need to constantly reduce it in the same shooting environment.

my experience has been quite contrary to yours because in the photos i took with my phone, it manages to get bright highlights toned down really well. id suggest keeping the shutter setting on prefer quality instead of speed and turning scene optimiser on because they really help with point and shoot auto mode shots.

I took an S21 to my son's pre-k graduation. It was one of my bigger regrets of the year. Good videos, good zoom, dog food photos. They looked like smudgy oil paintings. Just ordered an S23U, against my better judgement. Hope it's, at least, a little better.

@@SofaKingA It's a very good phone. Still has trouble capturing moving subjects without turning it to mush (and I mean 4 year old rocking back and forth, not running). That aside, it's superlatively good with a more immersive screen and an unkillable battery life. I switched my esim back into the 14 Pro yesterday. A part of me may never be happy with giving Apple business, but the 14 Pro is more portable, also has near unkillable battery plus better cameras. The wonder years only last so long, and I'd rather have a more reliable snapper short of a dslr to remember them by.
