2000 সাল থেকে, জার্মানিতে বিদেশী পিতামাতার কাছে জন্মগ্রহণকারী শিশুরা তাদের পিতামাতার বিদেশী নাগরিকত্ব ছাড়াও জন্মের সময় জার্মান নাগরিকত্ব অর্জন করে, জুস সোলি (ল্যাটিন "অঞ্চলের অধিকার" এর জন্য) নীতিতে। তাদের অভিভাবকদের মধ্যে অন্তত একজনকে কমপক্ষে আট বছর ধরে জার্মানির বৈধ বাসিন্দা হতে হবে এবং সন্তানের জন্মের সময় অবশ্যই স্থায়ীভাবে বসবাসের অধিকার থাকতে হবে।
Since 2000, children born in Germany to foreign parents acquire German citizenship at birth in addition to the foreign citizenship of their parents, on the principle of jus soli (Latin for "right of the territory"). At least one of their parents must have been a legal resident of Germany for at least eight years and must have a permanent right of residence at the time of the child's birth.
German coalition government plans to reduce the standard, required period of residence in Germany to apply for citizenship from eight to five years and to drop the ban on dual nationality for non-EU citizens.
