Thanks for watching. Hope you enjoyed this old Super 8mm sound film shot along the B&O Between Relay Maryland (South of Baltimore) and Philadelphia Pennsylvania in 1978.
Please be sure to check out my many other video clips from the 1970's up to today. God Bless
Please do not use without permission. All my videos and images are Copyright protected. Thank you...
Movie was taken with a Kodak Ektasound Super 8mm sound camera. Very privative to todays standards, so quality wasn't all that great. Each cassette holds 3-1/2 minutes of film, and was expensive.
God Bless our troops, and,
God Bless the United States of America

NE 84/87 came off the Delaware and Hudson in Philadelphia. They ran through Reading, Allentown and Taylor on the way to Binghamton NY. They used trackage from Reading, Jersey Central, Lehigh Valley and Erie Lackawanna railroads.

4:45 What a gorgeous big tag K5LA! Those are extremely rare to find nowadays, so it's awesome to hear one from back in the day.

I think it’s actually an original corker K5LA. If this was recorded in 78 then this is likely one of the first K5LA’s built!

I'm an old B&O fan..... I love the B&O. In fact, the B&O was the reason I got into radio, and became a ham operator. I grew up along the East End Sub (now the Philly sub) in Darby, Pa. There was a siding there, and NE 87, 685, The Advanced Chicagoan, 689, The Chicago Trailer Jet, and more, all would sometimes stop at Darby, waiting for another train. Got to know a lot of train crews as kid. Brought back a lot of good memories watching this film. I remember the CSS....I had film of it myself up in the Darby area. Also had pics of the 614 when it stopped in Darby. B&O and Chessie were one hell of a railroad.....CSX just isn't the same. Since they took down my CPLs, those Safetrans signals don't give me the same feeling.

So neat seeing the B&O trains in the area I grew up in during the 1960's. Love those GP-30's!

4:45 might be one of the earliest recordings of a K5LA I've heard... they'd only been in use for a few years at the time. Also not sure I've seen footage of the Chessie Steam Special, especially with sound. Your channel is absolute gold, we all appreciate your effort preserving all these recordings.

3:44 I didn't notice right away but that is where the St. Denis Marc station is today. It's not right where he's standing, it's closer to that bridge, but it's crazy to see a place I've been to so often growing up in a film from way back then. I was just there yesterday heh.

My wife and I were on that 1978 CSS excursion pictured in the video, running from Baltimore to Philadelphia. First time I ever got to ride through the Howard St. tunnel. We also took two other CSS excursions between 1977 and 1978. One was a circle trip out of Baltimore that ran via the Old Main Line going west, creeping around the tight east leg of the wye at Point of Rocks, and return to Balto. via the Metropolitan Sub. The other trip went to Harpers Ferry but I don't remember whether it ran west via OML and east via Met. Sub. or Met Sub. both directions. Have to dig out my old ticket stubs and see if the route is mentioned.

That first trip was neat. We road it the first day, chased it the second. When we got to Baltimore, they were still painting the smokebox. www.flickr.com/photos/jackdk/28356079670

@@1jackdk Thank you for the photo link. Brings back memories of the way Camden Station tracks used to look. Around 1983 we also rode another nice steam trip from Balto. to Martinsburg, WV with C&O 614. My wife even had family come up from southern VA to ride with us. Really miss those rail excursions out of Baltimore on the B&O and WM back in the 1960s, '70s and '80s.

Glad you were able to get your movies digitized, along with the sound. You had to have used a pretty good transfer medium as well as post-transfer editing in a computer program. Being that the film stock was Ektachrome, you either had little to no color fade/shift over the years, due to good storage practices. Thanks for sharing.

I find it fascinating that the B&o and the PRR run nearly parallel to each other between DC and NYC. And they cross each other in the vicinity of the Guinness brewery. Of course, the PRR ran under a tunnel to get to Manhattan and the B&O terminated ad Jersey City Communipaw station.

What happened to the Chessie System streamer after Conrail took over the east coast rail system? Man B&O Chessie system W&M road pwr was alot of Geep 40's leaders back in the day. Great to see old vintage films of what the rail system was like nearly 4 decades ago.
