I applaud the government for not having birthright citizenship for foreigners. It is a very dangerous path to take. Taiwan has 700,000 migrants workers and close to 100,000 foreigners and assuming that half are women of childbearing age, the possibility of having a few hundred thousand kids born in Taiwan to foreigners per year is a reality. This number will overwhelm native born Taiwanese kids. What will happen to our education system? Will the main language of instruction be in Vietnamese, Thai, Tagalog, Indonesian or bastardized English? What will happen to the Taiwanese people? Within one generation, Taiwanese will be a minority in their own country and there won't be a Taiwanese identity anymore. Taiwanese has one of the highest average IQ in the world and that is why they are able to build their country into an economic powerhouse and a civilized orderly society. What happens if half the population in the future have an IQ of less than 90, will Taiwan still be an economic powerhouse with an orderly society? Taiwan will turn into a third world basketcase with its human labor as its biggest export. On the political side, how much attachment will these foreigner born kids have to Taiwan? Will they vote for unification with China if incentivized with lots of money to do so? They can always take the money and run to their parents country of origin. The societal and political reality of Taiwan is not conducive to an immigration policy of birthright citizenship for foreigners.

The requirements for Taiwan citizenship don't make any sense and should be relaxed. Why does a foreigner have to relinquish his or her home country citizenship first to be able to apply for Taiwan's. When the application is being processed he or she doesn't have any status. If you are a resident alien in the US for 5 years you can apply for citizenship while still holding your original citizenship. I know of lots of Taiwanese having dual citizenships, such as Taiwan and US or Canada, so why can't this couple be treated equal?

Because Taiwan has the right to their own immigration policy just like every other country. If anyone does not like it, they can always leave or just don't come at all.
