There is a custom called Obon in Japan. 8 / 12-8 / 15 Bon Odori is danced there. There is a Buddhist teaching in Obon that the spirits of ancestors will return for a while, and it started to entertain the spirits of ancestors. I think this Awa Odori is a development of it. However, it has become an event far from the original purpose.
