Baalbek Reborn is a series of teletours presenting the sites and monuments of Baalbek (ancient Heliopolis) in the Roman imperial period. At that time Baalbek was the dominant city in the fertile Beqaa Valley in eastern Lebanon. Our virtual tours show you the ruins as they appear today and also take you back in time to see the monuments as they looked in antiquity. Experts from the German Archaeological Institute, which has been working here since 1898, explain what you are seeing on your teletours.

And my feet were walking there, and my hand were touching those stones... It was in 2003 but it was a feeling I was brought to that epoch... I still remember Tyr, Sydon, Byblos , Tarabulus, Baalbeck, Anjar, Bent Jbail, Beiruth. And every time I miss this great pra-motherland of civilization...

It may be considered Roman Architecture but it's a lot older than the Romans. Some of the stones weigh over 1000 ton. A recent video I've watched claims the most powerful crane today can pick up about 265 ton. Far cry from 1000 plus

The 330ton Vatican obelisk was moved from Egypt to Rome, it stood for 1500 years until it was relocated in 1585 to it's current position. It took 900men and 140 horses to erect the 330ton obelisk. Sketches can be seen of that moving event. If they could ship and erect a 330ton stone from Egypt, couldn't they also move ('only' slide) a 1000ton stone over 900 meters in Baalbek? Likely so. The 1900 year old Trajan's Column has a 53.3 ton capital block that was lifted and placed on 34meter height. Don't underestimate what the Romans were capable of.

@@luca_rr4660 yes luca, they could and they did, even they move 2 greater obelisks than the vatican one, 2 of more of 400 tons, 1 to Rome for the Circus Maximus actually in front of the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran and the other to Constantinople's Hipodrome in the reign of Constantius II, son of Constantine the great, as the Jews move 3 stones of 600 tons for the retaining wall of the temple of Jerusalem, the romans moved 3 of around 800 tons for the retaining wall of Baalbek (the 1000 tons one was never finished and is the quarry), even in the central park of New York you have one of more of 200 tons (yes an original egyptian obelisk), some people see too much "History" channel.

No doubt the original base stones go very far back in antiquity, way before Roman times. But the clever Romans, great engineers that they were, built on top of the original impossibly large stones.

Except , the Romans , meticulus record keepers have none on this or the temple of Jupiter, plus it`s over 2k+ miles away and the rose quartz columns came from Aswan,..Over the mountains...Hmm...?
