Duolingo has wildly improved in the past year. They now use real native voice recordings. No more generated voices. They also have more types of exercises so you can learn in different ways. Additionally, they have added a LOT of lessons. I'm not for sure how conversational you would be at the end of the language, but it's more than it would have been one year ago. There needs to be a follow-up to this video.

Here are my broad experiences with either, I've been subscribed to Babbel for roughly 3 years. *Babbel:* - Offers good & well structured lessons (5/5) - A good breakdown of complex language concepts into basic format - Disadvantages: no variation in revision material (same exercises over and over again) *Duolingo:* - Offers good & well structured lessons (4/5) - The gaming format you allude to in the video is + for them and encourages commitment - Advantage: free, huge variation in revision material making revision exercises more fun & less about cramming - Disadvantages: serious lack of structured introduction into complex language concepts As a final analysis of the two, I would recommend one starts with Babbel and, perhaps halfway into the Intermediary courses, you do Duolingo. The main advantage of Babbel, I have found, is that it has an incredibly well structured format in introducing concepts and how to build blocks from one concept to another so a student's understanding isn't lost. Consequently, Babbel is able to lay the proper foundation before introducing complicated concepts, e.g. like how the French treat verbs. In a word, it's my first goto when learning a new language concept. I largely rely on Duolingo for daily revision & practice as Babbel's revisionary material isn't that strong: it's repetitive, i.e. the same sentences, so it's difficult to know if you've truly learned a concept or crammed it. I will relate a vignette about French verb conjugations and my experiences on Duolingo. Having come from Babbel, I was introduced into such a well structured introduction of the concept that I got it immediately and recognised the patterns they were pointing to - *all language is patterns*. However, when I started using Duolingo, I was shocked to find that their earliest exercises had verbs in them and if you browse through their forums, so many users struggled with the concept of treating French verbs. They could not understand why verbs are conjugated, how to know when to conjugate it in a particular way and when not to. They also struggled to recognize how to tell if a noun if a noun is masculine or feminine by just look at its word structure. When I investigated why, Duolingo hadn't offered any lessons on French verb conjugations and the rules governing these (treating both pronunciation and spelling). There was no proper build-up in their pre-exercise notes. All this lack of organization in introducing material is really what makes people feel disheartened and want to give up. Duolingo recently offered updates and introduced a course for verb conjugation but it's still not sufficient or clear (for laymen) in my opinion. Anyway, that's my recommendation to anyone. Use Babbel as a startup for everything and Duolingo (and other sites you can find) for revision and practice purposes. This strategy has worked well for me.

Glad to hear it and thanks for the nice words :) That is completely normal btw, getting a level of understanding spoken language takes time and a lot of practice. If you have mastered Duolingo, Babbel might not push you enough. I would therefore recommend apps like Lingq for listening or Italki for speaking and of course meetups or going to the country for actual interaction with locals. Am going to make a video about this in more detail, but if you have any more questions, ask away ;)

Thanks very much for this independent analysis of two language programs. I used Duolingo but there was such emphasis on odd nouns like names of insects and animals, like: rabbit, crab, turtle, monkey, spider etc and over and over using the same group of names of animals you would not very often use rather than immediate more day to day names of things. I quit Duolingo twice because of this, but very nice they offer that for free. It did next to nothing for my Spanish and I worked at it most every day for two months and had high points. I think I might try Babbel but not sure of prices yet.

I did both! Duolingo first then Babbel. Babbel taught me a lot about French culture so that when I went to Paris, I wasn’t shocked as I had already learned a lot about French culture and etiquette. Duolingo was much better for “drilling” than learning. I learn the content at school and Babbel then I go to Duolingo to drill and do repetitive exercises. Duolingo is also great because you can ask questions on threads and have answers from people. The unfortunate thing about both is that I live in Canada and they don’t teach anything about Quebec :( In addition, I also recommend watching KZfaq videos, participating on r/French, r/Quebec and r/France on Reddit as well as download an app called “Speaky” to interact with French speakers.

I’ve done them both. Started with Duolingo, switched to Babbel, back to Duolingo. Now Duolingo sometimes also uses “native” speakers, for instance in Latin and Esperanto. The quality of the courses in Duo differs hugely per language. Learning German or French on Duolingo is way better than for instance Italian (provided you learn from English). And improving! But Latin in Duolingo is a joke, it is horrible. Duo has a lot of controversy in a lot of translations and not every sentence is useful and the fact that it is maintained by volunteers is sometimes a bit too noticeble, but in general I have little complaints. Babbel feels more solid (and classical) but I found the number of lessons underwhelming. Duolingo has much more material in most languages. I finished Italian in both the apps and Duo just has quite a bit more material. And French and German in Duo has WAY more material than Italian. Babbel (Italian) feels quite limited. Too limited. It was just enough for half a year which is really not enough. Duo invites me to do some research if my translation was correct or not when Duo says it isn’t, and if not, why, and that is very insightful. Babbel is more: do what the teacher says. I found out later that there are many alternatives for some phrases that Babbel didn’t accept. Also, if you pay in Duo, you can skip and go back quite a bit, and you can learn multiple languages without having to pay for every language as in Babbel. Also Duolingo makes it easier and more natural to do a bit every day, which is really important if you want to learn. Of course you need to speak the language also with natives to really learn, and I advise to find good language schools in the countries themselves, but to keep you in touch daily with the language for a longer period of time, you would end up either with Duo or, like I did, both. I’ve been doing Duolingo for three years now and still going strong in four languages (other than Italian that I finished, I keep hoping for new lessons). Babbel I did for almost a year.

Update about Duolingo: in the past two years it has changed greatly with a big update a few months ago. If you pay (less than €10 a month) you can jump ahead as much as you like. I noticed a lot of resentment against the updates, but I guess that's because people just don't like things to change. Because the update is actually really good. The French course is good but endless. But it does help you because the endless repetitions really function like being submerged in the language. It feels natural. You don't make an effort the repetition does the learning for you! That's just as submerging in a language works. My French family-in-law notice my rapid improvement. German is also endless. However, the endless senseless sentences like "The owl wants to know if you have a typewriter" are extremely irritating. You don't have these in the French (from English) course. Italian is still not extended. Esperanto is not updated at all. Dutch from English also has a lot of irritating silly sentences, my girlfriend hatres it and quit D because of it.

I think you pretty much nailed it. Babbel is far more worthwhile if you're actually studying a language properly. It actually explains grammar, tenses and sentence structures. Duolingo is perhaps good at familiarising yourself with individual words and phrases but isn't going to be much help in real-world situations. Pimsleur is quite a good shout for improving conversational skills I've found. The app / site are a bit dated but it actually introduces you to composing full conversational responses in your head without prompts fairly early in. Again it's not free but it does offer something that Babbel probably lacks.

A good analysis. I have used both Babbel and Duolingo. With Babbel I went to the end with French and I really enjoyed it. I especially liked the dialogs and the clear grammar presentation. Now that I am at home with a lot of retirement time making my days longer I have been doing Duolingo, jumping from French to Spanish, and Italian. Since it is free I can do that. With Babbel you need to pay for each individual course. I do get really irritated though with Duoling having to spend so much time on useless vocabulary without being able to go ahead (unless I pay). The robotic voices can also be very tiresome and since they record individual words they can't change the intonnation for questions. Grammar is also poorly explained. Conclusion, as said above, use Babbel for a short introduction but if you want to learn the language, go to Babbel or even something better.

I learned many of the basics such as “I eat sushi”, “Where are you?”, etc. I came here to ask if anyone knows if you need a keyboard in the language you are learning to continue the lesson. In Duolingo, it needed me to use the Russian keyboard and I don’t use it anymore so it won’t let me continue the lesson. I don’t want the need to use the Russian keyboard to learn the language.

Babbel app lets you speak and control if you pronounce it well. If not, It highlights the part you have problems pronouncing. Duolingo doesn't do that from what I could tell from a couple of days of messing around with it.

I find it funny all the babbel as well as Rosetta Stone adds i listened to, it's "You can learn French, German, Italian Even Spanish". Has anyone caught the add saying, you can learn to speak English? "And It's So Easy"!! Just saying it could be helpful to many..

Duolingo is free...Free...FREE! (err... lots of advertising now) ... but does it teach you a language?... yes! ~ but only use it as a revision platform. To get to fluency speak to a native speaker on a regular basis. Use regular textbooks but regular speaking practice is key, for fluency in any language.

The silly translation in duolingo aren't pointless, far from it in fact. It's the difference of trying explain to someone the grammar behind "that, right there" which is technically saying the same thing twice and how/why anyone would say such a thing; and having them naturally pick it up on their own by putting them in a position where they have to use it. You are giving a person more and different context to grammatical rules that they may not be taught otherwise. So with all due respect to those serious language learners gawking at those "useless" phrases, they clearly don't understand how humans best learn things. When you learn your first language as a child, you aren't taught grammar and all the nuances that go with that grammar structure, you learn it by memorizing associations of sounds to meaning to desire of expression. You memorize sounds you hear and associate them with a meaning(weather that meaning is correct or not at this point does not matter as it will be corrected later through experience and through several different contexts),object, desire, feeling, etc then, only through numerous contexts you figure out how to make use of those meanings to express yourself. This is the same principal of what a language immersion class does to a student. As for achievable fluency through duolingo alone; at least in the context of Japanese and what I've seen so far of it, you can learn more than enough to pass the N4 level of the JLPT I define fluency as the ability to understand(about the competency of a 4th or 5th grader in the American school system) and learn in the target language without the assistance of/in any other language and in my opinion, duolingo will definitely get you there, and then some.

Nothing can make you 100 percent fluent all by its self. But, one of the best things is speaks with natives and if you're crazy move there while you barely know any. That last will make you fluent, after a pain period of not understanding anything.

J'ai essayé les deux mais je préfère Babbel. Je révise mes vieilles notions d'allemand du lycée (ça revient vite grâce au rabachage du vocabulaire) et j'apprends le suédois "pour les vacances", ce que Duolingo ne proposait pas. Après, il faut être régulier. Appli ludique ou pas, il faut quand même faire ça sérieusement... 😉

Well, I disagree that one has to talk to a native speaker to know a language, for instance, I might have not spoken to a single native English speaker all my life nor do I speak English with non- natives. Yes, my fluency in speaking English is very poor, but I believe with this level of reading and listening comprehension I can do better with a few months of practice.

I don’t understand the critisism of useless phrases. Are you really using all phrases from an app by heart? I learn how to make proper sentences from other sources and I use DL for learning words. And it’s much easier for me to remember how to say „wolves” if I learn it in the context of „the wolves are eating my husband” instead of something boring and generic

The difference is simple. Babbel French is a well written course with lots of grammar notes, full use of spaced repetition, a professional look and feel and well organised. Duolingo is an amateurish course written by people who cannot speak English, translations are often poor, with lots of childish gamification, no use of spaced repetition, heavy identity politics (though Babbel is not much better), and mind numbingly tedious lessons. The November 2022 update destroyed Duolingo, before then it was okay.
