I’m an 80s baby so I came of age in the 90s; and there sure as heck weren’t any fast food restaurants inside any of the schools _I_ went to.

I remember when my stepfather (R.I.P.) and I used to go to Old Country Buffet when I was a kid and I would come back with a big plate of proteins, he would always say, “You’d better go back and put some vegetables on your plate.“

Yup... with the cost cutting on the school's part the children's nutrition took a nose dive. what they don't tell you about the 'nutritious' meals near the end is that this is wide spread only to schools that can afford it. like those in big cities... while those in smaller cities... they're still stuck cutting corners so the 'nutritious' meals aren't really too much better since they have to buy off brand stuff and while off brand isn't always a bad thing, when it comes to school meals and buying in the bulk they do... it generally is. Off brand is generally only good in the supermarket, not so much when you're talking company / school sized. It's always about the money... schools still don't have enough funds to give kids the food they need nation wide.

Not sure where you get your info, but I grew up in the 60s. Our school lunches never included salad or fresh fruit juice. Most often, we saw pizza, hamburgers, fish (on Fridays, of course) and a few other entrees...usually accompanied by turnip greens, pinto beans, and some kind of dessert none of us ever ate. When younger, I always took my lunch...made by my mom, but usually bought school lunch on pizza day. For drink, we had milk...period.

Going to school in the 90s all I remember is cheeseburgers, fries and pizza. I think the main choice most days was pizza or cheeseburger. And yes, we got vending machines. Even in the 8th grade I was thinking "These shouldn't be here".

I was in school between the mid seventies to the mid to late eighties. We had very much balanced lunches. Salad, main protein with veg, and dessert (like fruited gelatin, fruited sweet bakes, or fresh fruit) I came up in northwest Florida, where we even had full breakfasts, and snack time.

Lucky you. Here in Indiana balanced meal meant the tray didn't fall out of your hands. My high school knew the food was so bad they let us walk to the fast food places all around us

I graduated in 1970 My high school had a decade old candy machince in the main hallway. It was padlocked during the day, and only usable during after school activities. I carried my lunch most of my years in school, because the school lunches were inedible. Between food allergies, and horrible cooks, I simply couldn't eat it. It got better, my last few years, after the school system went to a Central kitchen. The long time, bad cooks simply weren't hired for their new kitchens. My my mother spent her last few years working for a small school system as a cook. She was instantly hated by the other women, because the kids demanded to know which dishes she had prepared, each day.

School lunches have never been coked in central kitchens, each school within the same school system that school whether elementary,Jr.or middle school and, high school have different cafeteria ladies that do the cooking, if they had central kitchens to cook the meals it would be quite costly and, then, and, they would be breaking lots of regulations. Those schools if the done this they would be breaking too many rules and, they would get quite a bit of violations! Meals really wouldn’t be fit to eat and, this would never go over with the state or the food, health and safety commission! Don’t Assume what you have no knowledge of! It’s all common sense, use it! School lunches in Ohio was almost over have of what they served and smelled like dog food! Milk tasted warm and sour in the cartons with the coolers being left open!

@@sonyafox3271 Yawn... It is no different than a catering business. Middletown City Schools (Ohio) converted in the mid '60s. The large metal trays of hot or cold were transferred in converted step vans to a group of schools. One central kitchen was at the old high school. I saw these converted cafeterias in person, both a a student and later as a contractor who provided repair services to that school system. That building was recently demolished, along with many other older school buildings that were built prior to the Korean War. It must be quite painful to be so clueless!

@michaelterrell Working as a school cook is no easy feat! 😅 Your mom's popularity among the students is amusing. Were there any dishes she prepared that became legendary among the kids?

@@BabbleTop They didn't care what she made, they devoured it, while the rest of the dishes mostly ended up in the garbage. She learned to cook for a large family, at a very young age. She described standing on a tall soap box to reach the large pots on the wood fired kitchen stove as she worked to feed everyone in her extended family, and their large farm. Keeping the right temperature on a wood stove was difficult, in itself. She won ribbons at the county fair for her canned and baked goods, every time that she entered. It was a blessing to grow up in a home with a cook, like her. No one ever turned down an invitation to stay and eat at our table.

Going to high school the student council decided the menu so we had a rotation of chicken nuggets, hamburgers, hot dogs, and pizza. The lunch ladies made sure that one meal a week was a traditional meal. The only day of the week I was guaranteed to eat because I'm not a 5 year old

When I went to a small country school once a month they had pizza catered because they cared about the kids. They refused to use their budget for sports programs making the parents come up with the funding. Our cafeteria was run by volunteer grandmas that cooked awesome meals. Then I switched to the big conglomerate high school with crap food and they spent a huge chunk of their budget on sports teams leaving barely anything left for food. Even they knew how bad the food was so we were allowed to walk to the fast food places all around. The menu rotated pizza (the familiar disgusting squares), chicken nuggets, microwave burgers, and fish sandwiches (identical to the horrible filet-o-fish from McDonald's). Once a week the lunch ladies would make a home style meal. That was the day I was guaranteed to eat. Where as most days I gave my lunch up to my friends because they had no taste on home style meal day I usually had at least 5 trays in front of me especially on spaghetti and meatballs day. I got everyone's tray

Every time "they" tell us school lunches are not nutritious, school lunches become more expensive and LESS nutritious. It's been happening like that for decades.

When I was in junior high in the early 70's, they started this new break around 10:00am they called nutrition. They had a small shack that sold candy, chocolate, fruit pies etc. Nothing nutritious at all. Around the corner at the cafeteria the only thing they offered were french rolls with butter warm and toasted for 10 cents. Not very healthy choices. I brought my lunch which my mother prepared most of the time, but every once in a while when I had some money I would indulge in some Wacky Wafers or Chuckles or one of those delicious warm French rolls. They were quite tasty. 🍭🍬🍫

@drphibesrises Junior high days in the early 70s and the unique break time called nutrition. It's interesting how the term "nutrition" was used despite the offerings not being very nutritious. The small shack with candy, chocolate, and fruit pies seems like a popular spot, and the cafeteria's warm and toasted French rolls with butter for 10 cents must have been a tasty treat.🤙🏻

this depends if you went to public/private school my parents both went home for lunch in the 60s as they went to Catholic school though my mom switched to public in 2nd or 3rd grade. the only Times we got something outside the Cafeteria to eat was if we were having Donuts for breakfast at half term or a pizza party or we walked to a fast food restaurant near the school during after school program oh and my late maternal grandmother drove me to school for most of elementary and from the back end of 7th grade through 9th grade but in middle school & HS they sold pizza in the Cafeteria and had a junk food line which included chicken nuggets/wings fries potato skins etc. granted I graduated HS in 2004

1980s. A Houston lunch menu may have looked like that, but in Galena Park ISD. The lunches there were much better.

2000s? We had all a’ cart lines in the 70s through the 80s,where some schools had salad bars in High School, I know cause, I got a salad just about everyday! We could also get yogurt and, ice cream everyday! yogurt and fresh fruit was put on the salad bar!

When I went to a small country school in the 80s we had salad and other choices. Plus the food was made by volunteer grandmas making incredible food but in the 90s we had to go to the big conglomerate city school where the food was horrible and the only vegetable choice was between mashed potatoes or french fries. At least the lunch ladies demanded that once a week we had home style meals. That was the only day I was guaranteed to eat. On most days I pushed my tray into the middle of the table for my friends to fight over but on home style day I got all their trays especially on spaghetti day

@@sonyafox3271I grew up in both Illinois and Indiana. The pizza in Indiana was hit or miss but in Illinois we had either pizza hut or a local pizzeria cater lunch once a month. In Indiana the only food that I could choke down was the home style meals. I loved the spaghetti and meatballs. They had a great beef stew and chili. But I couldn't stand the chicken nuggets or fish sandwich

Are in Ohio had to be the worst a pre-made patty full off what looked like it had been soaked filled grease and, smelled like dog food! I told my mom one day, I want her to see some of this food, especially the hamburgers and, eat one and, then, you will see why, I wanted to pack my lunch all the time! My mom could cook and worked as the cook in many home cooking restaurants and waited tables as well, sometimes she worked a shift all by herself! My mom swore that the food couldn’t be that bad, I said, yes it is! I said you eat your homemade Mac and cheese and, then, try theirs! You wouldn’t even touch it! So, the day finally came, my mom took off of work during her lunch break and, got to school,I had packed my lunch, and sure enough they were serving hamburgers that day! And, so, a couple of my guy friends were there and, I told them, we were anxiously waiting for this! So, my mom finally got it and, said, it didn’t look fit for dogs, and, she said, she would like to know whose behind serving us that food! But, we sat there laughing and cussing at was a regular everyday occurrence and, some of what other nasty stuff we were served!

States, part of it has to first have to do with what food corporations the government sources their food from, but, a majority of the food manufacture is made at a corporation and, then just sticks a government label on it and, it’s usually a lower or cheapest grade of food product they have! Aka/ State Prisons and County jails their food is sourced identically the same, lol that’s why school food tastes like prison food!

I had a friend who's mother was a lunch lady, she often complained about the food being processed tasteless garbage. She told horror stories of microwave burger patties and chicken nuggets. The only time the kitchen equipment got used when they made home style meals. Ironically those were the only days I would eat

I went from a small country school that spent all its funding on the students and nothing on sports. The lunch ladies were volunteer grandmas that made awesome food. Then I went to a big conglomerate city school that spent most of its funding on the football and basketball team leaving little left for the students. Even they knew the food was crap because they let us leave and go to the fast food places just down the street

I have prepared my children's lunches . I was in school durimg the Vietnam wR, and the Reagan administration. We ate what we hot and didn't complain. We also listened to, and respected our teachers, smd had physical education daily My kids eat well, are respectful, and are fit.
