Jonathan Walton, VP Business Development - Marine, shares the latest with the Royal Navy Type 31 and Arrowhead 140 frigate programs during DSEI 2023. Babcock just laid the keel for the second Type 31 (Inspiration class) frigate, HMS Venturer. In addition, Poland's first Miecznik frigate and Indonesia's first Merah Putih (Red and White) frigate recently entered production. Both are based on Babock's Arrowhead 140 design.
=====================
Selected by the UK Royal Navy as the design solution for its new Type 31 Inspiration Class frigates, the Arrowhead 140 design, benefits from a proven hull-form that has been tried and tested in real-world operational environments from NATO and coalition task forces to national regional and deployed operations.
The baseline AH140 design can be configured to meet the broad range of operational requirements and profiles a global frigate may be called upon to undertake and adopt.

Two units of Indonesian "Red White" Frigate (Arrowhead 140) will be the largest frigate in South East Asia. Good thing for Indonesia. 🇲🇨 Despite there is controversial thing about what kind of Combat Management System (CMS) that Indonesia will be used for this frigate, where the Chief of Indonesian National Armed Forces wants CMS from Thales, and Defense Minister wants CMS from Havelsan due to Indonesian regulation reguries TOT. I still optimistic about this frigate. But If I can give a suggestion about different opinion between Chief Indonesian National Armed Forces and Defense Minister, there will be two units of Red White frigate. One unit should stick with original CMS from Thales to make sure the frigate is using the battle proven CMS. And another unit can use CMS from Havelsan to fulfill Indonesia's regulations about the Transfer of Technology. But anything is good. Still waiting more good news from Fincantieri about the progress of 6 FREMM for Indonesia.

Danish OMT are responsible for the Danish Iver Heuitfeld class on which both the type 31 and Arrowhead 140 design are based. However Iver Heuitfeld fregat has more missiles than the before mentioned. It shares it MK41 32VLS, suitable for SM-2 and possible SM-6 and Tomahawk, but it also has additional 24 ESSM and 16 Harpoon missiles. OMT is also responsible for designing Australias manufacturing plant where their future Hunter class fregat will be build.

The arrowhead can be equipped according to the iver huitfeldt specs, the 32 cell mk 41, the 4 amidships iver huitfeldt stanflex modules each take either 8 harpoons or 12 essm (6x2 essm dual launched by mk 56 vls). The royal navy doesn't use stanflex but no reason why they can't have say 24 sea ceptors in mushroom farms on the weapons deck, outside the mk 41., sea ceptor is smaller than essm(and more sea ceptors can be fitted if exls is used) and 16 naval strike missiles. Though I would ditch the naval strike missiles, use the weapons deck only for sea ceptor and fill all the mk 41 cells with FC/ASW- the nsms can go on the patrol boats when retired or maybe the type 32s if they become aa frigates like the iver huitfeldt (suitable radar, 32 asters or standards, 24 sea ceptors, 16 nsms

@LuqmanHM Not really. They're entirely different beasts. So far there has been no indication the type 31 is capable of high end ASW warfare They use direct diesel engine propulsion, which while I'm sure can be soundproofed some, is not as quiet as the diesel electric system on a Type 26. They also use the smaller CAPTAS 2 array

Alongside with the AUKUS submarine program this shows ever increasing cooperation between the CANZUCK nations with the USA added to the mix as they supply/design many of the systems

Probably due to the Arrowhead/Type 31 being based on the Royal Danish Navy (RDN) Iver Hutfitfeldt-class frigate being CODAD (Combined Diesel and Diesel), and adding a gas turbine will require a redesign of the propulsion room which could further increase cost.
@rackjeen4670

@@alexis_ian Yes, however, it is said that Bobcock is looking for ways to mitigate the ship's self-radiated noise to enhace ASW capability. If they can do redesign, why didn't they offer it to Greece. Greece chose FDI which is way more expensive with same propulsion in CODAD. If Bobcock offered a AH140 with CODLOD/CODLAD with thales sensors and US missiles they cpuld have easily won it, but the Greeks I think made a political move by choosing French.

Indeed, Indonesian local production of warships goes on another level. Despite being colonized by the Dutch, it didn't matter. Meanwhile, their northern neighbor is still stuck in colonial mentality era. Still zero locally build navy OPV, not even coastguard OPV. They removed local production requirement for their latest navy OPVs. Not only that, Japan offered to locally build 5 coastguard patrol vessels of total 10 but rejected such offer. Even if they finally decide to locally build, they might build it in the north area again, worsening again their perennial problem of overcentralization, further distorting the general welfare of the country. Wondering when will they make a move that is not associated with epic fail

Babcock UK, the maker of RN's Arrowhead 140 type 31 frigates was also selected by Poland and Indonesia for their respective navy's maritime frigate needs. These ships were valued at around £250M each, and some will be initially built here in the UK, whilst the rest will be build through the partner country's own maritime dockyards (Poland & Indonesia) through technology transfer scheme. These ships are not that costly, unlike those made by BAE systems futuristic warships which costs more than £500M each. So, there's a great possibility that the Philippines Navy may acquire these kind of frigates via Indonesia. Those 2 frigates that Philippines acquired from South Korea BRP Jose Rizal and BRP Antonio Luna costs around 200M$ each I guess.. just saying though.

Maybe if Babcock will partner with a local Shipyard or the government will have then be built locally. Although with the uncertainty of the Type 32 follow-on frigate it may allow Babcock to retain Builder if 2-3 will be built in the UK initially while the remainder will be built in the philippines through TOT with the UK.

Yep they have their hat in the basket for future codeveloped vessel for both Australia and NZ, nothing really been finialised and there a few companies looking for the contract, we went from Canberra talking about building warship Corvettes to now codeveloping a ship with NZ for both our countries.. Our Australian Naval fleet restructure review has been pushed back till next year some time which means Canberra waiting on NZ decision in regards to codeveloping a new vessel for both our countries.. If i was a betting man i would say that the MEKO A200 will be selected with some sort of collaboration between TKMS and Lurreson over the Arrowhead 140 unless they spin some sort of AUKUS deal.. Whatever the outcome is it's not going to be done in a hurry also we will be lucky to see any built this decade..

The Canadian PBO office also put out a report comparing the cost of Canada's Type 26 acquisition to theoretical acquisitions of the FREMM or Type 31 and a combined Type 26/Type 31 fleet was recommended over a pure Type 26 fleet to remain within the CSC's C$60B budget, so Canada might throw its hat into the ring for the Arrowhead 140 project.
