When I look at old pics or watch black & white films it almost feels like the world was without color back then. Its hard to imagine what it looked like with color. Idk why it seems that way to me. It's like it defines the era. I'm sure with modern tech its possible to make old films and photos have artificially installed color but I don't think people want that. B&w defined the era I suppose

The overwhelming prevalence of black and white pictures of the early 1960s and previous to that kind of give those years a mystique that there wouldn't have been otherwise, I think. I was born in 1960 and I have memories of the early 60s, so I know otherwise about the early 60s, but the 1950s and before have that black and white mystique to me.

Some can argue that Ruth was not the BEST player of all time, but there is no doubt that he was the GREATEST. Besides saving the game in the wake of the Black Sox scandal, he essentially invented the home run as a viable offensive weapon. As some have pointed out, in many years he out-homered every TEAM in the majors. He was the first player to hit 30, 40, 50, and 60 home runs in a season, as well as the first to hit 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, and 700 in a career. When he hit is 700th home run in 1934, he had more than twice as many as the next player on the list (Lou Gehrig who would have 348 by the end of that season).
@theseventhsojourner141310 жыл бұрын
Yeah Tony, I think you nailed it. The Greatest. And as much carousing as Ruth did and as many times as his large appetite for life kept him from being his best, he always had time for kids and always had a sense of humility about himself. There's a game on television right now and here I am looking at baseball's past. That pretty much sums it up for me.

Some might even argue turning baseball into a power hitter's game is the worst thing that happened to it. Not everybody liked what he did to the game, foremost among them John McGraw, the legendary Giants manager. Small ball is much more tense and exciting, and is what made baseball popular to begin with.
@runner650010 жыл бұрын
shadowheart52 Sooooo True!!! Ty Cobb also hated Ruth because his home runs were changing the game (and eventually the size of ballparks). And I totally agree, the excitement of the game is on the base paths. That's been taken away, as players are now just waiting on base for someone to hit a homer. The drop in stolen bases, and bunts will prove that.

What is often overlooked about Ruth is that he started his career as a left-handed starting pitcher. He was an excellent pitcher. What sets Ruth apart from any other player in the major leagues is that he was certainly the greatest hitter of his time, but, if he stayed a pitcher, he more than likely would have been the greatest pitcher of his time. No other player in history had this excellence at both aspects of the game.

I enjoyed the banter too. They both excelled in their day and both are hall of famers, with all the drugs and nonsense aside. I just don't think Ruth can ever possibly be left out of the conversation for the simple fact that he changed the game for ever, he bought glamour and excitement to the game via the homerun. I'll never argue with anyone who claims that the game was more exciting before the home run became more common. To me, it is a matter of taste. A 1-0 pitchers' duel can be as exciting as an 18-16 slugfest with three grand slams (an actual college game I witnessed in 2003). Yankee Stadium was built for Ruth, with the 296-foot short porch in right field. But, remember, Mel Ott and, for a time, WIllie Mays, were helped by the 251- and 256-foot foul lines of the Polo Grounds. But, in his time, Ruth was so far ahead of everyone when it came to his power (never mind his .342 lifetime average) that he added a dimension to the game that is still with us today.

Color film became the standard by '40 and 2 color technicolor was being used sparingly in films as early as the '20s. Hell, color TV was feasible from the very start of television, but wasn't used due to costs outweighing benefits. I think people don't give enough credit to the old time innovators. It wasn't like they didn't know about color back in the day. A lot of the things we take for granted today (video discs, high def, etc) were considered a lot earlier than we think.

He also had a 1.06 ERA in the WS and went 29.67 innings without allowing a run in the WS. Then he became an outfielder in 1918 and still won 22 and lost 12 as a part time pitcher in 1918 and 1919. People don't give enough credit to the inventors and innovators of technology we take for granted today. A lot of things were considered and researched even back in the 19th century and considered feasible, but the technology hadn't quite gotten to the point where manufacturing color televisions or pushing color TV/film/photography was cost efficient enough to produce it on a mass scale. As soon as photography was invented, I'm sure the next thought was how to do it in color.
