I've never heard this song before, but I like the symbolism of "babushka" which means grandmother. She's using a term for an old woman, and it seems to be a cute joke to him, but it's also how her husband sees her.

As someone who’s first language is Russian, I absolutely LOVE how you pronounce babooshka while both sticking to the “oo” sound pronunciation and yet still making it sound correct to the language!!

My first language is English, but I was actually born in Russia to Russian mother(father wasnt in the picture) so I’m trying to learn it, and that’s one of the only things I’m able to get right just about everytime

Idk doesn't seem correct at all to me. Both her and Kate make an accent on the second vowel and it just sounds weird to a native speaker (or any speaker honestly) - probably because Kate didn't know what it even means - good for her lmao. But it's not like you can change much considering that the whole chorus is structured around this "babOOshka" pronunciation.

I love all the different interpretations of this song! The range is so good, how it could be a tragic fall from grace out of misplaced jealousy, maybe the husband already knew she was writing the letters and was playing along, maybe she realised at the end that she didn't need to hide herself because she was still the 'Babooshka' after all! Or maybe she murdered him! That too! Hell yeah queen!

I've always struggled between the constant problem of being able to sing alto and soprano years ago. Teachers would constantly sort classes by singing groups, forcing me to choose one and slowly get out of practice of the other. Anna's covers have helped me realize how to be both! Not only that, but just from listening to Annapantsu, I've felt more accepted as an alto in a world where I've only experienced sopranos getting constant praise for being more "feminine". I now have a vocal coach, a college class full of people who are always helping each other with singing, and a huge thank you to a youtuber I've been listening to for years. Thank you so much for helping and inspiring me throughout the years Anna!

I actually really relate to this. It sounds like you're probably a mezzo. I've been told that's what I am. I could sing alto really well and then people made me self conscious about how deep I was singing. I could sing some soprano parts as well but soprano was harder for me but doable. In recent couple years I figured out how to do mostly in my higher range and my lower range is now out of practice and this channel has been really helpful about figuring out how I can do both and find the balance.

Altos gain their power by drinking the tears of the sopranos whose solos they stole lmao those POOR UNFORTUNATE SOULS. It took me years, but it seems like alto singers are finally getting more popular, especially with the revival of some older styles of music. Florence Welch is my goals.

Girls were always confused how i had the same vocal range as most boys and I was a little self conscious about it so I had forced myself to sing higher notes and it has extended my range but now it’s really difficult to sing clearly, it’s raspy and sounds like I smoke 3 packs a day tbh 😂. I always liked being a lower echo better bc I didn’t have to strain and even in choir I used to go for lower bits with the guys but tbh I only went to choir to get out of 3 hour long science lessons I didn’t have any interest in whatsoever. I found a passion for singing tho. This channel definitely helped me find my range tho and whilst Babooshka is rlly pushing at how low my voice actually is bc I can barely hit that high note (proves my vocal range is much lower than average for a female). Everyone I know (even guys) can hit higher notes than me but I forced my voice to go lower and lower over the years so it’s all I can do now. Don’t regret it one bit tho cuz now songs are getting lower and lower in pitch and it’s great for me. 😂

@@micaelagordon7328 Try listening to the 'Hounds of Love' album and depending on if you like 'The Ninth Wave'(the second half of the album that was side b on the record), you can then either move to her earlier more pop stuff like The Kick Inside, Lionheart and Never For Ever it it's not your cup of tea or to Aerial, The Dreaming and eventually 50 Words for Snow if it is.

I have a hard time paying attention to lyrics in songs, even with musical theater songs, it takes me numerous listens and often lots of effort to understand what even the main theme of the song is. (I think it's because of my ADHD.) But the fact that your covers always have the lyrics written down helps a LOT!! Even just for this song, I've heard it tons of times before but until now I had no idea this was what the song was about. So thank you so much, I really appreciate it!!!

Ahhh! It's interesting hearing this version!!! I was addicted to the original as a kid, and I used the song as one of my vocal pieces during A-Level, so hearing this iteration is really interesting! Like, not only is your voice absolutely beauteous, but the way you phrase it makes me feel like the original meaning is there, but the angle has gained a little more sharpness, like both characters are bitter, not just the wife, and the ending was a lot more tragic than "Hubby finds out Babooska was something made up by his Wife to test him before actually meeting "Babooshka"". I'm now going to put this on loop until I've dried Every Drop of Serotonin from it, LOL. Thanks! ^w^ (also it's funny because whenever I sing/sang it, because of how little-kid me interpreted it, I was always lighter on some parts of the lyrics, to make parts like "when she was beautiful" and so on: like the wife sets up this entire thing, sour over not being able to have what they had before, only for the husband at the end to not be horrified, but to actually be like "but you're still that young self [babooska]" as he finally gets to see how much pain his wife is in, compared to the quiet rage she'd slowly grown to have...)

I’ve been binging all your covers recently (a friend recommended me to you since I’m doing Arabian Nights as my audition song next year for a production, really enjoyed “Prince Ali”, and “Poor Unfortunate Souls” as well!), and I think you’d do amazing with “That’s How You Know” From Enchanted, since you have such an enchanting voice! Which production are you doing? Depending on mine for spring, I'm doing Sweet Child, Poor Unfortunate Souls, Kiss the Girl (The little Mermaid), Mother Knows Best (Tangled), or something from Aladdin, probably a good cut of High Adventure, These Palace Walls, or Prince Ali Reprise. (Sorry for the long list, I don't know what the production is so gotta keep my options open!)

I listened to this while wearing my shift (that looks similar to the one Anna is wearing in the cover, I also ironically have red hair), a fancy lookin fur robe, and twirling around my room in front of my mirror with a cup of tea. I felt like a woman who's filthy rich husband recently died of mysterious causes and I'm isolating myself from everyone to "mourn" his death
