I'm surprised that as a wildlife rehabber, you didn't suggest that people leave seemingly abandoned young fawns (or any other young wildlife) alone because in most cases their parents will return. They've simply gone to get food either for themselves or their offspring or both. There's not usually any reason to interfere, although it's a good idea to put your pets inside and back away yourself, watching from a location inside your house or your vehicle or somewhere where they can't see you so you're not disturbing them, from which you can check to see if an adult returns.

My husband and I found 2 fawns just a couple of days old. Momma had left them to feed. We were afraid a neighbor would end up taking them because he didn’t realize Momma would be back for them. So, we each carried one and placed it in the woods near us and sure enough, momma called for them and they were reunited. She didn’t reject them because of our scent. I don’t know . Maybe some will reject but I’ve heard that’s an old wives tale. That was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done! Magical and beautiful! 😊

This is real living in harmony. 🙏 Adorable little guy, and you've got a gorgeous Coyote friend there! In recent years I've learned just what incredible, emotional creatures deer are. We witnessed a male fawn be born outside the house and to this day, years later, he still comes back to that exact spot to meet up with his mother, and his mother guards over him as he naps. You can tell he truly loves his mom. we've witnessed his first steps, his first antlers to the gorgeous ones he wears today. He brought his first girlfriend to meet his mom at their spot by the house, which was pretty wild to see. To this day, he and his mom still reunite at their spot (sometimes with her latest offspring in tow), and now they take turns so he too can guard over his aging mom while she naps. It's beautiful stuff.

We had a doe give birth to twin boys in front of our home many years ago. We watched the whole birth process. We watched them grow all summer and into the fall. At night, they would bed down right against the house. The following spring the doe appeared with her 2 boys in tow growing cute little antlers. 3 days later, the doe gave birth in the exact same spot as the year before to a little girl. Her brothers watched over mum and their sister as she was born. Again, they stayed all summer and into the winter. We had to look out the windows to see where they were grazing or having a nap before we could go out the door. We didn’t want to spook them. The following year, they were all back with mama doe giving birth in the same spot again. This continued for 9 years. Occasionally, one or two of the siblings would be missing. Our last winter before we sold, the group with their old mama and some newbies stayed close, bedding down by the house at night, or just in the brush at the edge of the lawn for the whole winter, into the Spring! It was a very hard winter so we gave them a bit of treats every day. We sold our farm and hope mama’s offspring continued to come to their birthplace. Very special memories!!❤️

You do NOT need to return a fawn to their parents, and you should never handle wildlife unless you are trained to do so. For some wild animals like birds, you actually need a permit to handle them unless it's a real emergency. The deal with deer is that in nearly all cases, young deer who appear to us to be abandoned or orphaned are actually hunkering down hiding while they wait for their parents to come back with food for them. There's no need to insert yourself into this situation, trust me.

It's actually true though. Touching them, while it won't necessarily get them abandoned by their mothers, it can leave a scent to the otherwise hidden fawn. The only thing that confuses me is, why do animals follow human scents to fawns when they're supposed to be scared of humans in the first place?
@rachelwebber3605
@rachelwebber3605 Жыл бұрын
Momma deer will take back fawns that have been touched by humans. I spent a summer radio collaring deer fawns and we only had one fawn get abandoned (and that happened almost a month after he was collared, so likely had nothing to do with us). One of the fawns we collared had half his face ripped off by a coyote, and the momma still took care of him, despite all the coyote smell on him. When we collared fawns, we could hear the moms crashing through the brush to try to get our attention and lead us away from their babies. A couple times does even charged us. Being a mother is stronger than strange smells on your baby! On the other hand, momma deer will "abandon" their fawns if people attempt to "rescue" a lone fawn and move it away from where mom left it. She can't follow the scent trail and her fawn can't call back to her to show its location. I think that's where the myth comes from.

Yea 100% agree with all you said! I don’t get why that myth is perpetuated so much. There are a 100 videos of humans helping fawns when they get tangles in a backyard net or fencing Mom standing right there watching human handle thier baby getting it untangles and the mom ALWAYS ushers her fawn away back into the woods. So it does not surprise me one bit you radio collared fawns and Mom still took care of them. What a cool job to have though, must of been so much fun! But I really wish that whole narrative of touching a fawn will make the mother abandon it. The main reason is it stops people from helping a fawn when it gets in trouble….

I believe it comes from mothers telling their children not to take baby birds out of nests because "then the mother wont take it back". Which is not true at all. And I think when those kids were never told the truth, they grew up and just started thinking "Oh that must be true for other animals, they don't accept their babies back with foreign smells."
@davidmeld
@davidmeld 4 ай бұрын
This is not why. Yes, the doe will take the fawn back; absolutely correct in that. However, fawns are born without a smell, which protects them from predators. By touching a fawn, it gets a smell, making it easier for predators to find. So while yes, absolutely help if a fawn is in trouble, just touching them for no reason makes their life a lot harder and in some cases a doe will be forced to leave the fawn behind for a predator to catch. It's not as black and white as it's made out to be, but it absolutely can make the lives of the deer harder.

Duck is such a gentle, welcoming dog, he wagged at the baby deer as if it were a member of the family, Weave of course, chomps everyone and I think its a maternal thing with her, in that she knows the fawn and Howie are babies and she estimates if she's able to carry them or not, if the little deer was Howies size I am fairly sure she'd pick it up and bring it to you, the pack leader. She's the mother, Ducks the mediator and you are the alpha while everyone else are siblings in her mental pack image. You have brought up some wonderful, non discriminatory animals there, if you can do this with diverse breeds theres no excuse for humanity as a whole.

You're right, and as far as i know that goes for all animals and their babies. Thats a myth that their moms wont take them back. I had baby bunnies in my yard 3 different years when my kids were little, and my mom worked for our county park district and asked a naturalist if it was true that the moms wouldn't come back for them... bc my kids were dying to touch them lol. Ive also had to ask that about baby birds whos nest fell out of a tree and one of the birds came out of the nest. Im sure its better to be safe than sorry, but i think their moms still come back to care for them regardless.

@@kathycamac1011 It 100% doesn’t matter how domesticated or sweet you think an animal is, if it is a predator, it still has instincts to attack and hunt. Do not expose predator pets to animals that can’t defend themselves no matter how harmless you believe it is. That is literally the number one rule when it comes to owning dogs, which have been domesticated over THOUSANDS of years, but fucking Coyotes? They still have very strong instincts intact in their brains because they are wild animals still, even if you tame them.

That was good advice he gave his son..we went to a bird nest that the birds had built too low. We were in the 6th grade. For 3 years that bird dived bombed us for 3 years straight. Birds have a great memory and we started taking another way home. Dont touch wild animal babies of any kind.

I think the " if you touch it the mom won't take it back" was a way that our parents, and grandparents used to keep all of us kids from disturbing the living he'll out of nature-- and every bird nest in the county as well. Most birds had young fall out of the nest, and I replaced...they did take the chick's back. I think too, that it involves a lot of factors, some of which we may not even be aware of, and that maybe that was another consideration for making that remark. But, in general I think putting juniors butt back in the nest--is a safe bet.
