On today's CapeCast: We see baby diamondback terrapins hatching at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and talk to the volunteers who help them get a head start.

What these people are doing is really good!!! See, only 1% of turtles survive after they hatch because of predators, getting killed on roads and etc. I found a baby painted turtle who was stuck struggling in the tall grass 3 years ago. I took him home. I still have him today and he is very healthy and happy. I also adopted a 5 year old red eared slider. We all need to contribute and help turtles!!!🐢🐢🐢

Um, you’re right, The Guardian. The name IS in the title: turtles. They’re ‘terrapins,’ actually, but most people use ‘turtle’ and ‘terrapin’ typically in an interchangeable manner.

reminds me of my little tortoise, i saved from a cooking bazar in Tunisia. Still got killed from my puppy a few years later while i was not on watch. Makes me sad every day, but atleast it got a chance to live a good few years longer. :/

coffee grounds are the answer----put coffee grounds down, 2nd you use of coffee grounds. I have had all kinds of ant problems in potted citus trees, figs, and other plants. Finally, I heavily watered the pots to drive the ants to the surface and then sprinkled the used, dried, coffee grounds on the surface. The ants left and did not return. I now do a maintenance treatment, about once a month, and the problem remains solved. I have not tried putting them in the bottom when potting, but will, soon. Good tip that works

+Lina Beth I wouldn't recommend keeping turtles as 'pets'. It's like trying to cage a wild wolf in a hunter's dog cage. The animal will never be happy and really keeping exotic pets is more often than no a disaster with many tears for keeper and captive. Rather support the move to ban animal trading and put your love and time into helping the wild animals who deserve to be free.

+Billy Green wow, you're bright, aren't you? The exotic pet trade, one I have a strong figure in, is actually helping animal populations. As law we must captive breed, so none are taken but that allows the populations to grow instead of people having to catch them themselves. Renato Ribeiro Normally that would be the case, but the issue here is that diamondback turtles are an endangered species on the brink of extinction. They DO need help. It isn't a natural extinction either; like most endangered species these days it's because humans have set the natural balance way off kilter so these people are doing their best to perpetuate the circle of life, not interrupt it.

Friends this is incredible! Turtles lived quietly, evolution created breeding rules for them! And only in the 21st century a person came and said this could not be, it is not viable! Turtles are very voracious, there are a lot of clutches and one reservoir is not rubber and will not overpower such a population

baby turtles keep saving the little ones with areas being turned into industrial sites new subdivisions malls whatever we are losing natural habitat for many species so little things like this forget natural selection whatever you call it this saves what little natural reproduction there is
