JMS's writing is so good! Clark's cancerous influence reminds me so much of certain recent real world stuff (from both East and West) it just shows that there is nothing new under the sun. B5 is a work that should be held up there with Orwell's 1984 in the way that it talks about the tricks that human monsters use to enslave their populations.

G'Kar: There are things in the universe billions of years older than either of our races. They're vast, timeless, and if they're aware of us at all, it is as little more than ants, and we have as much chance of communicating with them as an ant has with us. We know. We've tried. And we've learned that we can either stay out from underfoot or be stepped on. Catherine Sakai : That's it? That's all you know? G'Kar : Yes, they are a mystery. And I am both terrified and reassured to know that there are still wonders in the universe, that we have not yet explained everything. Whatever they are, Miss Sakai, they walk near Sigma 957, and they must walk there alone. Sigma 957 aliens: Zoq.

As always a great reaction. Draal appears ... "Hi!" Julie Musante is a tricky one, isn't she? The actor does a magnificent job here. I love to hate Musante. The arrogance just radiates from her, voice and all. "Political Officer" .... I like Sheridan's reaction, he knows exactly what Musante is there for. The most chilling sentence in the episode? For me it was "When we re-wrote the dictionary". G'Kar is very perceptive, isn't he? I love the way he got to Delenn. - and to Garinaldi: "I don't read Narn" - "Learn!" DRaal to Ivanova: "I like you! .... You're trouble!" Remember Sigma 957? The planet where Ms Sakai saw some very strange aliens - and almost died, but was saved by the Narn ship sent by G'Kar. "That was Morden" Indeed! That scene in Sheridan's quarters with Musante and Ivanova, It cracks me up every time. "I think you're about to go where - everyone has gone before". LOL! Ivanova know a gamble when she sees it. - and - Who knew they were French?" In all this serious business I am glad there is a bit of levity in the story telling. "...Go where everyone has gone before..." is a dig at Star Trek and their producers using B5 show material JMS was using to get the show started to make Deep Space Nine series. The B5 show has several digs at Star Trek because of it, my favorite is Ivanova screaming "We are not some deep space franchise, this station is about something!" in the gift shop episode. the whole conflict went to court and when Paramaunt realized they will lose the case they settled out of court, but terms were never disclosed.

People tend to forget, however, that Susan Ivanova replaced the previous XO on Babylon 5 from the pilot, and when the character was originally written nobody expected that Claudia Christian has a definite comedic talent that was going to waste if they did not tweak the character rather quickly (hence the arc of her father's illness, death, and moving on).

Hello, we love watching your reactions to the good old days of Babylon 5, brings back wonderful memories, Yes! We know that what we are about to say does not relate to these two episodes, but it is something we have wanted to say sense the beginning of watching your reactions to Babylon 5. It's about the two characters Dr Stephen Franklin played by Richard Biggs and Ranger Marcus Cole played by Jason Carter. They became very good friends and back in February 2004 came as guest stars at the 10th annual Star Fleet Ball convention down in Bournemouth. The Star Fleet Ball was ran to make charity money for the Macmillan's children's cancer support trust. ( the Star Fleet Ball back in the year 2000 is where my wife and myself actually met and fell in love, Sheesh! ) Richard Biggs and Jason Carter were so friendly and funny they really made that one of the best Star Fleet Balls ever. The funniest part was when the Star Fleet Ball does a ' Who wants to be a Star Fleet captain ' competition on stage, just like who wants to be a millionaire. Richard Biggs got to be the contestant being asked several sci fi questions one after another. The only problem was he did not know any of the answers, so he made a deal with us the audience, that every time he needed our help in answering the questions right for him, he would take another part of his clothes off!!! Jason knew alot of the answers about British sci fi like Doctor who so kept helping us help Richard as well. We, the whole audience sitting in that conference hall were laughing our heads off as Richard needing our help got more and more clothes off, until all he had left on was his boxer shorts!!! He was so determined to win that the last question would actually make him up on stage naked!!! The last question was which regeneration of the Doctor first meets the Black Guardian, Peter Davison, Tom Baker, Jon Pertwee, or Colin Baker? We all shout so loud Tom Baker over and over again, thus he gives the right answer and we're all expecting him to actually get naked up there. However those who run the Star Fleet Ball knew that they could not let him take his boxer shorts off and be on stage completely naked, so they said unfortunately that's the wrong answer, the right answer is Colin Baker?! We all can't stop laughing our heads off but kind of understood why they did that. Richard and Jason had been amazing all weekend at the Star Fleet Ball, as we said so kind, friendly and funny, we have always loved that charity conversation of February 2004. We are however so sad and heartbroken to say that even though Richard seemed so perfectly healthy and strong, only four months later in May 2004, Richard at the age of only 44 suddenly had an untimely death!? We still do not know how, other than being unexpected health problem. He had been so wonderful we could not help but cry when we discovered not long after spending such amazing time with him. It obviously also broke the hearts of Jason and all the other Babylon 5 actors that knew him so well! It's always been our favourite Star Fleet Ball (aside from year 2000 obviously) yet still feel so sad for what happened to him no more than 4 months later. It may seem strange but it is one of the reasons we have loved watching your reactions watching Babylon 5, bringing back such memories of our past both spectacular and saddening! Well sorry for going on too long, but big thank you kindly from ' the Doctor no.42,Yes? ' 42 being another one of the answers we all gave him that he took his trousers off for!

This is great! I honestly didn't think that we'd get this until next year! Anyways, there are a few things that I really enjoyed continuity wise. This is not the first time we've seen the Walkers of Sigma 957. We've seen them once before in early Season 1 where Jeff's girlfriend Catherine Sakai went to do a survey mission, lost power and had to be rescued by G'Kar. Afterwards, we never really followed up until nearly two full seasons' lengths later. The Revelation of just how deep the Shadows have infiltrated the highest offices of the Earth Alliance explains a great deal of certain things and alleged coincidences from earlier episodes, whether it's the Earth-Centauri non-aggression pact, Interplanetary Expeditions (IPX) being obsessed with raiding dead worlds to get a leg up on the Minbari as far as advanced tech goes, but more importantly that the Shadows are everywhere. I recall your speculation from the review of Chrysalis that the Shadows not only had a hand in destroying the Narn outpost in Quadrant 37, but also were somehow involved in the conspiracy to blow up Earth Force One. Well, now we know. And if you think that this is it, there's a few more episodes down the road that really hammer just how rotted out Earth is from the infestation of Shadow influence. Lastly, you may recall in the meeting between Morden, Psi Corps and Earth at the end of S3E1, that the Psi Cop spoke about "advancing the program back home". This upping the ante by Nightwatch is the first part of converting Earth into a totalitarian police state.

Every time this episode is looked at by someone you get people who pop up with this particular comment or ones in a similar vein. It really annoys me how they co-opt it with gusto. What alot of these people forget is at the time B5 was aired it was a Bill Clinton administration, and alot of the 'Orwelian' stuff Earth in the show was doing, literally happened only a few years latter during the Bush era and especially post 9/11. Huge clamps on the media, 'see something report something' signs in public, Alert levels used to hide government actions when they needed the cover through using public fear as distraction, redefining problems with phrases such as 'coalition of the willing' and 'fighting a war on terror', swaths of the populace considering anything anti (their) government to being anti patriotic (and patriotism being considered more important than being morally right) etc. No idea if your Conservative, or if you were even alive at the time any of that happened, although your comment is pretty heavy in that direction, but Conservatives love to comment on the clips of the B5 ministry of truth woman talking about truth speak etc as some sort of example about the big bad Democarates... yet completely ignore that their own side have, did for 8+ years and still do run that play book perfectly... and lets not forget the 'truth speak' jingoism birthed out of the last US administration, or do memories only last less than a year now? also... theres the fact J. Michael Straczynski is a big bad Liberal to boot. But i guess when it can be used against the other side he's suddenly on the conservative side of the fence since it suits their needs?

@@NZBigfoot Original author's intention aside (and *that* is pretty well-known, given that JMS spoke -- ranted! -- at length about the politics of B5 on Usenet back when the show was on the air), the show has wide enough applicability that it can pretty easily be interpreted as an allegory of one's (imaginary) enemies by basically everyone, which is a credit to its writing. So I'm not surprised that the wingnuts are latching onto it right now. I'm really curious what that reboot is going to be like in that regard, given that JMS has seen people he wouldn't agree with co-opt the original show's themes for going on 25 years now...
@justinplayfair4638
@justinplayfair4638 2 жыл бұрын
@@NZBigfoot So...one of the interesting things about Babylon 5, and some other shows, like Kenneth Johnson's wonderful V miniseries, is how open to interpretation they are. And how it is often assumed that they're representing the current state of the world, forgetting that these themes are *eternal*, unfortunately. I'm well aware of Straczynski's political leanings (he didn't have San Diego nuked in B5 for nothing!). One of my favorite quotes of his was that Boxleightner and Doyle's political leanings lay to right of Genghis Khan! But the ideas behind the Ministry of Truth, Night Watch, and the other "programs" implemented by Clark's administration are a playbook as old as time, and can ring true no matter WHEN they are presented. When Straczynski presented these episodes, the Clinton administration was indeed in office. And yes, I lived through those years as an adult. The left could interpret those episodes as commentaries on right-wing tactics being used against The Clintons and their administration. So too could many on the right make the same claims against the left, which they did. And... let's be observant of the fact that the owner of this channel is an international citizen and not located in the US, shall we? So, with regard to B5 and that era - which side in the US could claim that "side" represented THEIR POV? I know where I stand, and I pretty much know where JMS stands too. But the thing is, that almost doesn't matter...those subjects don't *belong* to the 90's, or any era. As long as humans have been around...what's the song? "Everything Old is New Again!" I rought up Kenneth Johnson's V as it shares many similarities with B5, ...at one point JMS was hired to write a continuation of it (which didn't go through). Of course, Johnson based his story on Sinclair Lewis' great book (SINCLAIR Lewis?!) "It Can't Happen Here". V was broadcast in 1983 during the Reagan Administration, and some could make the claim that Visitors' tactics reflected those of the Reagan Admistration during that time (without the hamster swallowing of course). Those on the right could of course maintain that much of V represented the left's intentions, especially regarding media. Who's right? Depends on your POV. I'm pretty sure Johnson didn't see *everything* in such B&W terms, with there being fascists on on sides. And it's not stated in the show itself, but the electronic news kits at the time made note of the fact that Johnson said Dr. Parrish, the leader of the resistance, was a Republican. Her portrayer, Faye Grant, said she was very please to be playing such a multi-layered character. With regard to Straczynski and his B5 reboot...he himself has said that his whole raison d'tere for reboot is the current climate, both in the US and around the world. And understand...just because an administration is out of office DOESN'T mean that something like the CW B5 *can't* comment on it... I write all this to note that the dangers of fascism are eternal, and as Sinclair Lewis wrote, there must eternal vigilance in preventing its rise in free societies. The unfortunate problem is *getting people to agree* on where the growing fascism lies, what *qualifies* as fascism, and *how* to prevent its rise without resorting to war and genocide. It will always be an ongoing discussion no matter where you are, and while this can sting like hell, it's a healthy thing. As is the presence of productions like V and B5 - if people won't read Lewis' book, then these shows can hopefully get people thinking and talking. As we have been, Presumptious Psuedonym. I'm not going to reveal my political leanings, as I don't owe you that in this discussion (although maybe you'd be surprised?!).. I'd also like to recommend Kenneth Johnson's V miniseries, if you haven't seen it - well worth your time! Surprisingly prescient too...although the idea that science itself could be disputed as propaganda, and that scientists themselves could be scapegoated, smeared, and menaced, almost like the jews in WWII, is pretty far out. Nope, That Couldn't Happen Here...

@@okreylos One of the most interesting things I've noticed about B5 political commentary is that, on KZfaq alone, there are comments from pretty much every single year comparing "our administration", sometimes the US in name (though I guess most other commenters meant it too). I bet on other sites/platforms/... people will have said the same before KZfaq even existed. Definitely a credit to his writing that it is seen as such a universal parallel to pretty different governments, even if I don't agree with every comparison.

Yay!- wasn't expecting you to put part 2 up the same day, do like not having to wait! The genuine shock on your face when Susan pulled the transmission between Morden & Clarke out of nowhere while inside the great machine reminded me of my own when watching it for the first time when first broadcast over here! This just goes to show how good JMS is at tying plot threads together as he weaves that big picture - & unlike some other well known sci-fi shows, B5 keeps canon really well & often calls back to earlier episodes to expand on the lore - as much as it's a great show you can just 'switch off' to & enjoy, I don't think I truly appreciated the genius intricacies & complexities of the universe that was created the first time round!

First, I want to say Thank You! for being so utterly polite in every video. Your parents obviously did a fantastic job. Second, I have been binging your watch through of B5 the last two days and am finally caught up to now in your watch and I feel like I'm watching it with a friend. There is so much more to come and my only dissapointment is that I now have to wait real time to see your watch throughs. Of course.. it's just like the first time and I've been watching the show on repeat pretty much since it aired and it never gets old, so congrats on finding a friendly series you can take with you for the next few decades and enjoy ;) Also I totally didn't notice Zach looking at Misante's rump in Sheridan's office til now, so again, find something new everytime ;) And now.. time to hit the archive and queue up episode 6 myself ;) Happy new year and see you for the next one :)

In the context of the recording being viewed by the folks back home noone knew who morden was, the ones on the station who knew didn't need to say anything because the focus is on the event and its ties to clark. Throwing too much light onto morden would both muddy the waters around the president and give him wriggle room but also risk creating interest by the shadows in who released the recording, how they got it and how much of a danger are they. It's not just upcoming episodes that are being foreshadowed with the way definitions are becoming rewrites to suit political agendas here on earth.

The viewers are so much more familiar with Morden's voice than say Sheridan or Garibaldi, having heard it through Morden's dialogue with everyone else.
