I worked on Babylon for 4 days. "La La Land" is my favorite film and Babylon was my most anticipated media project of the decade so far (besides Top Gun: Maverick) before worked on it, this production was a full circle/360 experience. The best job of my life and 1 of the best, happiest and greatest days/times/experiences of my life. This was a dream come true. I watched it yesterday (only 1 in the theater/no distractions), what a surreal/magical experience. I'm also in 4 or so shots 👌. Thanks for watching everyone! Can't wait for all of you to see what we've created!

i think this film does such a good job portraying messages that aren’t obvious. sure this movie is about hollywood on surface level, but i’ve yet to find anyone talking about the less obvious things. while we were all distracted by the bizarreness of the film, nobody has mentioned how Manuel and Nellies relationship is actually such a good example of a toxic relationship. we root for them until the very end despite them both not being good for each other, which i feel is so powerful. also just the random bursts of emotional moments in the chaos of life, applies to everyone.

Don't think anyone rooted for them. Its all crazyness. But there is a lesson here that the industry is full of the crazies and things were just nuts before it became super public and commercial and moral presenting. Actually, the official number (budget wise) is 78 million and the box office predictions have been climbing higher, I also think that it will play well internationally (mainly, because Brad Pitt still sells quite a bit - sure, he is half canceled in the US, but that doesnt have that much of an effect outside of the states).

It was sick, twisted, nostalgic, hallucinogenic, manic, hedonistic and over-the-top. And I liked it very much. Being familiar with 1920's-1930' Hollywood and its demons will help as the characters are composites of real people. Reading the book Hollywood Babylon by Kenneth Anger will definitely help. The music is awesome. The film visually stunning.

This seems like a fever dream of a movie… I can’t wait to see what else Diego Calva does in his career. Also I noticed a pattern, in the past 30 years only 3 actors have won the Best actor Oscar without a Best Picture nomination and/or win: Hanks, Denzel, and Bridges, To me I’m beginning to think Colin Farrell is the frontrunner.

I mean, the reason why Manuel climbs through the ranks is Hollywood is simply being at the right place at the right time and doing whatever it takes on set. Ex. pushing through to get the elephant to the party, getting the camera for the final shot, vouching for Sidney and getting him into films, finding Jack at the right time, rooting for Nellie and her career, etc. - Any Hollywood executive can look at that and be like, oh, he knows how Hollywood works and he's willing to do anything for the films, and cast and crew, to succeed.

Hmm, you make it sound like Damien Chazelle made a Licorice Pizza filtered through The Wolf of Wall Street which, not gonna lie, makes it sound even more enticing (I love it when respected auteurs are given budgets to basically do whatever they want and they do something off-the-wall)... it does, however, make me skeptical of its Oscar chance because, while both movies I mentioned were ultimately nominated for Best Picture, they were both quite divisive, which may hinder the nomination count and the wins. Also, the Brad Pitt character sounds like the kind of character who may be an anchor for older voters who can connect to watching an industry they were a part of become unrecognizable, so I wouldn't be that surprised if he does ultimately end up nominated... I sadly won't be able to see the film for a while (it won't be arriving until mid-January), but I look forward to it...

OATIH is very straightforward compared to this one. The best way I would describe it is if you mixed The Coen Brothers with David Lynch and a dash of PTA’s Inherent Vice but it’s about the end of an era (a very hedonistic era) once sound became the new way to make movies. It’s very stylized, very fun, extremely messy and totally worth watching with a large crowd.

Thanks, OE! Thanks, BB! 🎉 All of your thoughts are valid and I agree, for the most part. I'm just getting back from a screening of BABYLON so my mind is still percolating with it all. I enjoyed it... like a roller coaster ride... but I was really surprised that it evoked such deep emotions in me during the bit at the end (in the cinema as 'Manny' had an incongruous reaction to what the audience was perceiving as comedy and then going esoteric before turning the reaction into something different... illustrating Manny's full emotional journey). I hope Mr. Chazelle's next one is more in-line with LA LA LAND (which I will re-watch in a matter of days)... but, hey, it was an interesting way to spend 3 hours. #TheOscarExpert #DamienChazelle #Babylon #Babylon2022

Personally, I feel score is a possible win. It has the more in your face style but based on the music released it’s very repetitive and sounds very much the same. I feel a score that wins awards should be diverse in nature covering multiple emotions. Personally based on all the scores that have been nominated and the amounts of music listened in the tracks, I feel this year could be a more competitive than previous years. But time will tell as the winners are announced for the up coming awards. This is just my opinion, but it’s an opinion coming from a student bachelor of music in composition. Don’t know if it gives it any merit 🤷‍♂️

You guys are dead on about Brad Pitt's character: he's only given so much screen time because he's played by Brad Pitt. I didn't like the film. Movie anymore are just cobbled together from better older films. The Scorsese sweep from Goodfellas (which was ripped off in Boogie Nights). Scenes that try to be Tarantino--and they're not Tarantino (Once Upon Time in Hollywood is far superior). I thought this movie was a mess. It didn't go all out for its comedy (like Blake Edwards' S.O.B.) and it's not good enough to earn a place with Sunset Boulevard or The Bad and The Beautiful. At the end of the movie, the clips from better movies made me feel like I should've been watching those movies instead of Babylon. Everything was great...except the script and the direction.

This movie is self-indulgent garbage. Three hours? For _that?_ I want those three hours of my life back. This was the most poorly written mess I've seen in a long time. It's hilarious that some pretentious cartoon of a snooty snob character in the movie loftily tells Brad Pitt's character to 'try subtext' and he flips out on her and tries to champion how films have meaning even if they don't have subtext, *but of course the subtext is this particular film doesn't have that meaning.* _Babylon_ is a bloated, angry love letter to the bad old days of Hollywood that literally no one alive can remember or be nostalgic for, because that was literally a century ago. And it tries to depict this cautionary tale in a self-defeating way, because the haphazard attention to period details and over-the-top nature of the 'shock' elements (seriously, is anyone still shocked by this type of thing?) just gives the whole movie an unreality that completely undercuts that message. Unless that was the intent, in which case, go jump in a lake, Damien Chazelle, no one has time for your boring navel-lint-gazing nonsense. Certainly not _three motherforking hours._ This movie just does not work on any level except as a cautionary tale of what happens when you give some 'auteur' director a blank check and creative carte blanche.

Top gun was the most cliche and plainly written thing ever. Complete lack of nuance and just money grabbing big shots. Oh well, until audience opinion is relegated to just that, this is the realm we’ll be in.
