Considering the amount of Babymetal videos David has done and the amount of info given to him about the girls I found it hilarious that he actually thought that the concert was filmed in 1997. That would make the girls be around 40 to 45 years old now:D. It's called legend 1997 because Su was born in 1997 and this was her 16th birthday concert performed in 2013

This is the song sandwiched between Headbanger and Babymetal Death. Su starts the song lay on the floor from her hitting the gong at the end of Headbanger and if you remember her mascara running down her cheek in Death, it's from this song. I say this for David's benefit. I know all the BM fans will already know this.

Thanks for reacting, David. This is my favourite rendition of Akatsuki. With the instruments stripped out, Su evokes a sense of despair and haunting loneliness through the song. This is the song for the Onion ninjas out there who cannot stop tearing up when queen Su's voice cracks at the end. At the age of 16, if she had that impact on the listeners, it's fair to say that the song, particularly this rendition did a fair job.

Good honest reaction ... it was unfortunate you stopped and talked about revisions and Kiss at possibly the most impactful point of the performance, but I don't think it would have changed your opinion. Also this wasn't a revision or an early version or first draft or whatever, it was simply another or an alternative arrangement. The only difference between this and the full version as far as melody and lyrics etc was that Su did not sing the very last two lines ("Dye crimson! Dye bloody crimson!") in this one ... that part of the song you didn't recognise or remember being in the original was all there too. This 'unfinished' version really worked well in the context of the Legend 1997 concert as a whole with the narrative that was running throughout that whole show .... and it led beautifully into the finale 'BABYMETAL Death'. Taken as a stand alone performance without that context coupled with the audio mix of this video - and the fact you're really not into ballads - I think your assessment was very fair.

I can see someone thought that was a waste of a request because it’s not the style of song that’s up your alley but I actually really enjoyed your reaction David, even if I also kind of anticipated that it would not be your favorite thing in the world; also, it reinforces my respect for you for sticking to a coherent point and review system where you can acknowledge the strengths of a song regardless of personal preferences I wasn’t bothered by the mix nearly as much as you were even if I do wish the piano was a bit lower in the mix, but the difference probably just lies with personal perception

I think some give him requests to impress him, others simply give him requests simply because they trust his opinions on how to analyse a song without having his feelings infused into the score...he is quite decent at a fair score and adds valuable information. aka, his critiques are typically on point regardless of if he likes something or not.

It sounds as though when video was upscaled to 4k the sound balance changed. On Sound Cloud (studio version) the piano is more subdued. In many other reaction videos, there is a better balance between piano and singing. While singing, you can see her tear-up; one of a few times she's "cried" as Su-metal. This was the transition between Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!!! and Babymetal Death of the 1997 concert celebrating he 16th birthday (born 1997). In that context it is a ballad about the lose of childish dreams (being an idol) and transitioning in BD, becoming the Metal Goddess; hence the subdued, but emotional vocals. Iirc it was the only time she sang this version. As always I respect and highly value your opinions and analysis of a performance.

To be honest, I also prefer the regular version of this song, but here I find what the metal version lacks - emotions. Lyrics are the same, but in the metal version I get more of a verse about a knife with 2 blades and a body that will die, and here I hear words about silence, loneliness and anxiety more. It's as if this song has 2 layers - one brave and not giving up until the end and the other fragile, delicate and flooded with tears of longing. Great, honest response as usual, thank you!

@craigwang7857
@craigwang7857 Жыл бұрын
Babymetal uses the term "unfinished version", to my understanding, it equals to "non-heavy metalized". As you know Babymetal live performances are theatrecal, and they tell stories. Unfinished version tells a sad chapter of that concert story, the original version tells a fierce and struggled chapter of that concert story. Well, hope you can look at it this way. By the way, you should react to Babymetal "In the name of"
@johnschultz7765
@johnschultz7765 Жыл бұрын
"Unfinished" is used when the song is not performed in its entirety. For Akatsuki, the last line is omitted. For The One, it is not done through to it's instrumental conclusion, although that has often followed. If it is a non-metal arrangement, like with Monochrome, they call it Piano version. Babymetal are being precise and correct with the version naming.

The one thing I kind of am disappointed with (and you had no way of knowing so I don't blame you), is that you paused the song on your last pause RIGHT AT the emotional climax of the song. Su was actually crying at that point and if you hadn't paused you would have heard her voice break even. You would have also seen her tears if you saw the version where they filtered out a huge chunk of the blue lighting. In regards to you comment about her singing while sitting, I'll also add sitting and crying. That HAS to be difficult!

Not everyone has a penchant for such things. Also imagine if you were not a Babymetal fan, and knew nothing about the group or Su, would this song hit you as much as it does now? It's because we have a special connection with the group (something kind of unique with Asian artists and their fans), we relate better to the song.

Its always interesting to me seeing peoples others opnions of different versions of songs. You(David) seem to prefer the higher energy versions of the songs, where I prefer the stripped down more emotional versions. That being said, I still love the studio versions too and can see why many would prefer it.

Fair play, David. While I adore this performance by Su-, I have come to dislike the production for the reasons you stated and more. I have heard some fancam recordings so have at least some idea of what it sounded like in the venue. FOH first off, for the poorly balanced original mix, which does sound a /little/ better on some other videos. But why did they give her a different mic for this song? Or did they put in a patch at the board? The richness of her voice, that can be heard in the other songs from this same show, is missing. And in post they could have corrected for the excessive blue saturation so that we could clearly see what was going on. I have seen the 90% less blue edit and it is so much better. Oh, yeah, 4K from a Blu-ray source... You know, it is like guitar amps are better when they can go to 11. The section of the song you thought was added, was just slower tempo. Just the last line, a burn-it-all-down defiant "Dye crimson! Dye bloody crimson!" (which fits the original rock/metal version better than this ballad version, IMO) is omitted making it unfinished.
@MacTaipan

Ballads really have a hard time on your channel. :-) I‘m in the lucky position to love both versions equally, and I find it pretty amazing that they have created two versions from the same source material that are so different yet both great (to me at least). Su did a really good job filling it with emotion for a 16 year old girl, I think.

26 minutes of video, and no single word about the emotion delivered in this performance, which is the main point of this version imho. I also love the shredding guitars, time signature changes and all that stuff, but this Akatsuki Unfinished is simply glorious.

Hello David-Metal san!🤘😎🤘 I think we know now how much you hate ballads!🤣🤣🤣 Although saying that, your thoughts are very valuable everytime! We all have our preferences and it's good that way. But BABYMETAL also did a kind of mix between the rock and the acoustic version in their recent shows! You still have the rock but also the acoustic for a bit, which sounded just right. I think you might even enjoy that one! Of course thank you for your thoughts and I think they were testing out what to do early on and they'll get better as recent performances prove. Great Reaction with some really interesting insights into songwriting. This version of Akatsuki makes a trifecta with The One and Monochrome where there is both an electric/rock version and an acoustic version that is more of a ballad that while I get lots of people really love the ballad versions but for me personally all three electric/rock versions are in my personal 10 favorite Babymetal songs, but while I can acknowledge the ballad versions are really pretty they just don't really work for me personally.

I wondered which 'unfinished' version you would be requested to view and hoped it would be this version. I understand you prefer the usual version and I wondered what you would think about the mix, yes the piano is too loud. When I first heard this version, I wondered about post production shenanigans. Now this will not be popular, good old KZfaq, thee is a version using 'fan cam' audio. Obviously the vocal is still not clear but oh dear, as I suspected, it is almost painful to listen to. I will send you the link on a Patreon message because I have sadly discovered that KZfaq removes any comment I make now, that has a link. Even a KZfaq link! Go figure! You explained your views and feelings about the song and the versions you have heard and your score was very fair in my view.

Yeah, I was wondering what you will feel about this one, since you don't seem to like slow stuff, after the First Take Monochrome. But for me, I'm just impressed with the emotional performance of this. Lots of metal singers have got range and power (Tarja or Floor), but Su's one of the few singers I know that can be that expressive of emotions in her singing. From her facial expressions, the pained smile, to how she's singing with slight hesitation like she's choked up with emotion.... She's not just a vocalist.... That's one of the many reasons I like her, she doesn't just sing a song, she performs it... From facial expressions, to her own interpretive dance moves, its a whole package.... If a western pop singer sings a sad ballad, they might just lower their eyes a bit, a slight frown... When Su does it (like in Akatsuki Unfinished or No Rain No Rainbow), you can hear the cracking of her voice, the slight choking back a sob, the sad tearful expression... Better than some hollywood actresses. 🤘🦊🤘

Some of course want to impress him with something he will love, others may simply want him to breakdown a video regardless of if he likes it or not because he does so fairly even if he likes or dislikes a song. And then there is a 3rd option of since Dave has a fairly wide audience, introducing something he may not necessarily like will get eyes on the video from his followers who otherwise never seen this before and enjoyed it enough to dig deeper. Can't assume a reasoning behind a request. Like, eventually someone is going to request Heart no hoshi. Will Dave like it? no..he will most likely punch his laptop while watching it, but he will give it a fair score, and some followers may end up going down the SG rabbit hole (may god have mercy on their soul).

I think this song does stand out more as a straight ballad, and I like this version more. The regular, heavier version is fine, but it's in the vein of power metal which tends tends to sound generic to me. I don't fault you for the 1997 confusion. You are right about the mix: It is not good. Known problem with that Blu-ray. Who's fault is it? The instruments are all on track. So the person at the board screwed it up. If that happened today, one might say it were Su's fault. Because she directs the mix now. (*) But when this was recorded almost ten years ago she did not. (*) Most of that takes place during soundcheck and rehearsals on the same day as the concert.
