It was an homage to Metallica's goddess. Back in the early 90s, Key Kobayashi went to a Metallica concert during the black album tour, and became a metal fanatic. He said he could not get a regular metal band formed, but he could get Babymetal, so he put them together. In 2013 at Summer Sonic, just 3 months before this performance, the show where the Big 4 last performed together but that's a digression, Babymetal were walking around the festival where their And Justice for Babymetal homage t-shirts, and Lars saw them, and went with his wife to see them perform. He liked them, so the girls met Metallica And thought they were nice old men. Then they saw Metallica perform at the concert, and the girls say that they became gods on stage, and that is when they understood metal for the first time. It was pivotal for Su, who always struggled with how intense she became on stage as Su-metal, but seeing how she could separate her on stage persona from her personality, it propelled her forward. Big step in her maturation. Su offstage is an goofball. Been known to wear mismatched socks and forget to change out of her PJ bottoms on the way to rehearsal. Su-metal is a very different person, and it took a bit, and Metallica, for her to come to terms. So Metallica holds a special place in Babymetal's hearts, and they call them Metallica-san. And opened for them in Seoul this past year.

This is metal as hell! One of the most metal things i have seen. I am always getting chills watching this.

At this special show, they played this song as a closer. This show was meant to mark the transition from the former idol project BABYMETAL to the band BABYMETAL. It was also the last show, they used the BABYBONES fake band (the first half of the show). And yes... a really appropriate way to introduce yourself.... straight in your face! And yes... this statue was a clear reference to Metallica.

The special occasion in question was her 16th birthday. I guess it's pretty normal to be crucified for your 16 when you are the queen of metal isn't it ? xD

Before the 1st song (usually BMD) they also have kamishibai which is a narration (and used to introduce some song too). The Kamishibai itself is also part of Japanese culture. From Wiki : "Kamishibai (Japanese: 紙芝居, "paper play") is a form of Japanese street theatre and storytelling that was popular during the Depression of the 1930s and the post-war period in Japan until the advent of television during the twentieth century."

Yeah it was a special occasion, Su metal's 16 birthday ~ And this is legit the most Metal thing ever no contest. Sorry rammstrein,iron maiden and slayer(and I love all of them) there's nothing more metal than cute Japanese bois doing a crucifixion(looking happy about it)

I can only imagine how Christian parents must be running amok when they see their kids watching this (while everyone else is having fun, I'd like to add). :-) There are two things that I find particularly hilarious in this one: Yui and Moa fleeing in panic when Su reawakens, accompanied by a crazy guitar solo, and then the hooded figures jumping to the "death, death"-chants while holding the crosses over their heads. So great. BTW: You'll recognize the neck braces when you wach the official video to another one of their songs, Headbanger. Nevertheless, I'd once more vote for a happy one next called YAVA! I'm sure it will make you happy.

Who would have thought that watching a bunch of hooded figures with crosses chanting "Death! Death! Death!" could make one feel so happy?

Thank you for your reaction. When I comment on the various BabyMetal reaction videos that are posted, I normally recommend this version of BabyMetal Death. Generally it is played as an opening song, but does not have the crucifixion element. Misuta Kitsune have explained why Su was crucified on this occasion and why they have performed it only the once. It is not nonsense to me, what a fantastic way to celebrate being 16 and being re-born :-) Autohmae explains all about the word death and what they are actually singing.

It's a very unique song. It's hype live and a great opening song. Not one you'd really one that you'd want to play often on the CD, but great live. Very rare combination lol.

At shows this really opens up your primal metal spirit for 90 minutes pure moshing mayhem.

What they are saying is Babymetal desu, Su-Metal desu, Yui-Metal desu etc.. Desu is Japanese for I am or we are so yes they are just introducing themselves. Desu is pronounced "dess" which sounds a lot like death, especially considering the Japanese language doesn't have a "th" sound so they pronounce death as dess as well.

Believe it or not there are some people that don't really like this song, then they go and hear it live and that changes. Normaly it's played at the start of a show as thier intro song, after all the build up your just hit with Babymetal Death hard, loud and fast, you just get swept along with it.

"Death" is a play on words. "BabyMetal Desu" means (more or less) "We are BabyMetal," (as each "Su-Metal desu," "Yui-Metal desu," and "Moa-Metal desu" means "I am ___-Metal") but "desu" sounds so close to "death," that they capitalized upon that. ..Joe

💀 💀 💀 Believe that's the only time they used this song as a finale. It's usually their opening number. I had a lot of fun in Chula Vista watching Korn fans on either side of me who thought that BABYMETAL was going to be a mellow opening group. The look of shock when they kicked off with this song was really something to see. : )

All-right, that was metal! But they never repeated it, and I think I know why. I am a little bit older and a father, and to my mind the parents of these girls (16,14,14) must have made some angry phone calls about this to the management. Totally over the top for that age. You can actually see Moa and Yui-metal tremble, when they put the neck-brace on Su-metal. Well, everybody was learning, I guess.

This was a really heavy performance by them, and I like a lot.

I saw Metallica's tour in san diego. It was lady liberty from the album cover. Throughout the concert the stage would go black and another piece of the statue would appear until they destroyed the whole thing.

The opening song of that concert is sicker. Go search it on YT. You can find it as BABYMETAL ave maria and it's 10 minutes long. Got ecstasy the first time I watched it. Not kidding.

I've had enough of BABYMETAL already. Mr. DAVE is not special, everyone is the same! This is playing with words the japanese word desu is song without the u it dissapears when you speak it fast it is used as introduction randar1969 desu means 'i am randar1969' now des is prounounced as deas so it's realy playing with words international people think they say for example su metal death, but actually she says 'i am su metal' The resurrection part refers to her being done with sakura gakuin an idol group consisting of 10-15 members operating in an 'school' setting with different clubs where the girls are assigned to some operate even in more then one club the idol group operates under amuse inc (a record label) with the different subgroups performing in singing and dancing as idols. as experiment Koba another record label wanted to fuse metal with idol and they made an deal with amuse and they introduced 3 girls to the metal subgroup of that school called babymetal back in 2012 su was 14 at the time yui and moa 12. we are now 6 years further so make that 20-18-18 for the members. Other subgroups where/are for example Twinklestars , Science club, Mini pati (cooking club) normally the girls leave that school at age 16 and they graduate out... and an new girl comes in but babymetal was so succesfull that they decided not to replace the girls and to continue as group outside the 'idol school Sakura Gakuin. There are different views on this but that's the way i see it.

While this was wonderful theatrics in its day, I have to admit that I am kind of happy to see them get away from the "Christian" themed theatrics of that time. (Just my personal opinion). You are absolutely correct in this being an homage Metallica...good call!
