Great reaction. Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit (it had this narrative running all the way through and even started with a lip-synced dance remix of their song 'Headbanger') to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto, a J-Pop Idol, to be reborn as Su-metal, a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance. 'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (without the crucifixion) - it is the perfect introduction, but you know the lyrics (few as they are) and their meaning already. There were a couple of homages in this performance too. The opening drum beat is an homage to Metallica's 'One' and the statue crumbling at the end pays homage to Metallica's Justice For All tour of 1989 where they also had a statue (Lady Justice) crumble at the end of their shows. The neck brace is a tribute to X Japan drummer/pianist/songwriter/composer Yoshiki who damaged his neck so badly headbanging that he has to wear a neck brace most of the time, especially when performing. On special occasions 'BABYMETAL Death' was used later in the show and Legend 1997 was the title of the show celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday ... and they only crucify Su on special occasions. Hopefully you have found CrypticMisery's brand new guide to watch (it is a bit long, but worth it), he uploaded it yesterday or the day before?

FYI, most kitsunes would like to know more about the "real" girls, but there's very little info outside of basic biographies. They have no social media and the general public has hardly heard or seen anything from Yui for over three years, only second hand reports from other Sakura Gakuin grads like Aiko Yamaide and a pretty bland 10th year anniversary interview for Sakura Gakuin. You can see lots of the girls in Sakura Gakuin videos and some of them before that, but they are almost always performing. The concert DVDs have some behind the scenes stuff and there is an early video of a trip to Singapore where I think you get a sense of them just being kids, but even pictures of them in "street clothes" are not that common, especially after they went full time with Babymetal. Koba keeps a pretty tight lid on things and wants the lore to be in the front of the fans minds rather who someone is dating. Insulating the girls from fans is probably a good thing if it means they can have private lives, but Su, Moa and Yui and pretty much enigmas, Yui particularly as she's basically done nothing for 3 years, but is still under contract with Amuse. The Kamis do have social media accounts and do a lot of other projects, but they keep the code of silence when it comes to anything about Babymetal.

Well the lyrics won't take long... Fun fact, if you look closely, the "DNA" helix design in the intro to "Babymetal DEATH" is also on Su's stick mic that she uses in "Headbanger". There are a couple of Metallica homages in the statue and the music and they spell out B.A.B.Y.M.E.T.A.L. "Babymetal Death" here is the last song in the concert and is used as a big, insane, messianic, pun finale rather than the usual introduction. The manic excitement of Headbanger and the emotion of Akatsuki came before it and if you listen to all three songs together you'll get the context and the complete operatic scope of Su-metal leaving childhood behind, embracing sacrifice and finally being reborn as a metal goddess. Yes it's very silly, but just go with it. So on the day after her 16th birthday, as a present Su is transformed from a simple Sakura Gakuin school girl and reborn as a Metal Goddess to fulfill the plans of the Fox God, and that obviously requires crucifixion. The statue is Su in a "Mary likeness". It was also a transition in real life for Suzuku Nakamoto as a few months earlier she'd graduated from high school and the idol group "Sakura Gakuin (Moa and Yui were still members) and had started to work full time on Babymetal. The use of the Christian crucifixion iconography here juxtaposes death and rebirth. This is echoed in the chant at the beginning; "Death, Death, Death.. , Su-Metal desu"...etc. The "desu" sounds like "death" to Western ears (which is entirely on purpose), but in Japanese it means "to be" - so the words are " Death, Death, Death... I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are Babymetal". While this initially seems to be all about death it's also an affirmation of existence and being. Death and life/rebirth exist together just as in the crucifixion. The Japanese are far less precious about religion than most Westerners and take aspects of whatever religion works for them in a particular situation. The appropriation of the cross and the "Mary statue" here just serves the theatrical purpose to tell a story. Did I mention #notacult?

The song title and lyrics are a play on words in Japanese. In this context, "desu" can mean "I am" or "We are". It's pronounced "des", which can sound like "death", especially if you stick your tongue out a bit when you say it. : ) So when they say "Su-metal Death!, Yuimetal Death!, Moametal Death!, BABYMETAL Death!", it also means "I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are BABYMETAL". The rest of the lyrics are just spelling out "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L" one letter at a time. EDIT: I finished watching the rest of the video, and see that you looked up the lyrics. So, never mind. : )

So, they do not crucify Su-Metal every time they do this song, just on some of her birthdays lol “BABYMETAL Death” was a song they usually opened shows up with, since they’re just introducing themselves basically. On special occasions, like Legend 1997 and Legend S, they crucified Su-Metal to symbolize her moving onto the next phase of her life. In this show, it was her going from J-Pop idol to metal goddess. At Legend S it was for her coming of age (and additional other complex lore stuff). So here basically, “Headbanger” is about a 15 year old girl going to her first Metal show and it changes her life. “Akatsuki (Unfinished)” is essentially her getting ready to give up her life and sacrifice herself (which is why she starts crying in the performance, you can see her makeup running down her face), and “BABYMETAL Death” is the sacrifice itself, obviously. Oh, and when you do the guide, I have two versions. A 17 minute version and a 43 minute version. The shorter one basically teaches the basics, the longer one (which I just uploaded today) goes into a lot more detail. BABYMETAL fans are no strangers to long reaction videos, we are the ones who try to get everyone to do their full concerts after all. So, pick your poison. Lol Edit: I knew it was a helicopter right away lol. I live by a military base so I get that all the time.

Great reaction as always. This is a great opener for a Babymetal show to hype up the crowd... but they did play this as their last song from this particular show... From the guitar tone to the drums to the lore of Su being crucified, overall the energy and the performance was awesome..

I don't know if you are aware, but these were the 3 lasts songs from the Legend 1997 show 9also known in my home as 'the best damn sweet 16 party ever !): Headbanager, which ends with the girls on the ground after Su-metal hit the gong. Akatsuki Unfinished, which starts with Su-metal on the ground. After a introduction video with the cool artwork. She sings about how her love will prevail even if their was nothing left of her body. Babymetal Death, which starts off with a video explaining how little time is left until, euh.. a new beginning after the end. A rebirth. Also Babymetal Death clearly is also meant as an introduction, it's even the first song on the first album. And as others have mentioned: the first song of many older shows.

Woohoo! Been waiting for this one. Your deep dives into the lyrics and meaning of the songs saves us a lot of time typing out everything. My fingers for one...or ten, thank you. That being said, the reason for the performance was to mark Su's 16th birthday and her transformation from Idol to metal goddess. She had to be sacrificed for that transformation to be completed. This ritual was also performed at her 20th birthday where she was sacrificed to be come the messiah. It's a lot of lore related stuff, but is all just good fun. There are no religious overtones intended, it's just a very metal thing to do.

And, that's how Su abandoned her human life and was reborn as a metal goddess! Imagine going to this concert and then this happened! Going from a beautiful and emotional "Akatsuki (Unfinished)" to this is like an awesome punch to the face! This is a performance that you would remember for the rest of your life! Just mind blowing and face melting! Btw, the crumbling statue at the end that looks similar to the Virgin Mary, but actually has an Asian face, is a tribute to Metallica's "...And Justice For All". 🦊🤘

No further ... Oh oh! Just for your information, I witnessed newly arranged BABYMETAL DEATH 3 times at the venue of Budokan on Feb.19, Apr. 14 and 15. That was much harder than this and I saw Su, Moa and Momoko (one of Avengers) all crucified on the emblem of 2020.

Thank you for the BABYMETAL reaction again ! At first glance, BABYMETAL DEATH seems to dance easily, but according to an interview with YUI and MOA, they are physically tired more than they expected. They seem to be wondering if this is really the purpose of preparatory gymnastics lol. I personally also love BABYMETAL DEATH from LIVE AT WEMBLEY 2016. The scene in which three girls appeared at the very beginning with a classic gimmick surprised me. Among the live videos sold on Blu-ray, the LIVE AT WEMBLEY is one of the concerts that brings out the charm of BABYMETAL through the overall production. Once you hit this point, it's time for the guide. But yeah, got my aunt and dad into Babymetal and have the bluray of this concert but can't show it to them. But being a theatre graduate gives me some feels for the great performance art and dedication to concept here of the re-born goddess of metal, awesome! I think a comment from me got deleted? Probably because it included a reddit link I guess, smh it was a long one too. I was commenting about the genre of the song, and Death Metal at large and how it includes many sub-genres and micro-genres, and that it's hard to pinpoint exact genres for any song today given the amount of nuance, sub-genres and fusion going on. But that it'd comfortably be under the umbrella of Death Metal. I suggested melodic death-doom. Then I found this interesting reddit thread that categorized most early BM songs by genre, called "Genres of All BABYMETAL Songs" that I think you might be interested in. According to that thread, this song would be "Melodic Death Metal" with additional symphonic-electronic hybrid elements. Take care
