⚡ 💀 💕 / 🦊 ⛩ To quote the BABYMETAL members in the audio commentary they did for this song: [MOA] SU-METAL will slash you. Really. [YUI] Yeah. [SU] (laughs). 'Megitsune' is still my favorite BABYMETAL song, music video, and choreography. It consistently tops fan polls, and has been performed live more often than any other BABYMETAL song. According to interviews with Yuyoyuppe, the song arranger, BABYMETAL's producer Koba sent this back to him dozens of times before he was satisfied with the final mix. And he almost lost the final version when the project windows wouldn't open on his laptop. Backup your data everyone! The performers pretending to play the traditional Japanese instruments in this video are dancers with the Movement Design group. Chidori Yakumo is their director and choreographer. She is the woman performing the fan dance during the breakdown.

Great reaction, its been a while since you did BABYMETAL. Not bad with the pronunciation - you just missed pronouncing the e at the end (all the vowels are pronounced in Japanese, but a u in the middle of a word may be almost silent ... this is what I've learned by watching BABYMETAL anyway). Of course they have breakdowns, they do everything. 'Megitsune' regularly tops fan polls for their favourite song and has been played live more than any of their songs - this is another of their songs that really gets the crowd bouncing. It reflects a lot of the Japanese culture starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains why the fox masks were so prominent in this video) which in Japanese mythology are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive. They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong. Professor Andrew Hartley has made an excellent video which explains all the subtleties and meanings far better than I can if you care to watch that - it is really interesting. The breakdown with the pig squeals (yes that was pig squeal screams) uses the exact melody of an old and very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms). When Su pulled the short blade (tanto) from her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). This is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss. Much of the video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. This has become a place of pilgrimage for BABYMETAL fans visiting Tokyo. The guys at the back - yes they were dancers from the group run by the lady who did the fan dance during the breakdown.

I get the feeling Grington300 300 is President and CEO of the "I will comment on Babymetal Reactions" Club. Always look for his comments before posting any of my own now. I think Mat has a good eye, to catch the dancers weren't actually playing the music. And if I remember correctly the official Kami band hadn't formed before this debuted, so the music just gets better from here on out. Grington300 300 probably knows. He works for the Fox God.

The Kami Band first appeared in October 2012 but (apart from a series of shows in May 2013) they were still only playing festivals and encores in some shows until they became the full time live support from the shows at the Budokan in March 2014.

You should really go check out the KZfaq channel “Babymetal Reactor Resource”. They have all sorts of videos that won’t get blocked on KZfaq because there are watermarks over the video. However, in the description of every watermarks video, there is a link to an identical video that you watch without the watermark, then you just use the watermarked one in the reaction video you post, don’t actually watch the watermarked one unless you want too lol

Do they have other songs with breakdowns? Lol, just off the top of my head, YAVA!, Syncopation, GJ!, Iine!, Starlight, and Awadama Fever. My recommendation would be either YAVA! or Starlight, though if you do Starlight, you should know you're basically committing to doing Shine and Arkadia as well. ;) They form something of a triptych together as a musical (and choreographical) interpretation of loss, dealing with grief, and moving on, respectively. It doesn't have _a breakdown_ as such, but I think you'd also quite enjoy Rondo of Nightmare. I'll include links in a reply to this comment since YT sometimes decides to block comments with links.

Yes, the band in this video are all dancers and are miming with the instruments, however, the real backing band (the Kami Band) performs very dynamically in concerts and puts on a great shown. They also do some great solos and breakdowns, check out Rondo of Nightmare and Catch Me is You Can. Megitsune is one of Babymetal's female empowerment songs and when they sing it in front of all female audiences it's amazing. It questions many traditional Japanese attitudes towards women. It starts with Moa and Yui pulling and spinning Su out of a traditional kimono and they immediately go into a very energetic dance that is the opposite of traditional Mai or Buyo women's dance. Then the lyrics compare women to female foxes. In Japan foxes are known as shape shifters and the lyrics say that women often have to hide their true feelings and change the face they show to the world, not in a sly way, but for the benefit of others even if they are crying inside. The breakdown is a traditional Japanese tune "Sakura, Sakura" or "Cherry Blossom, Cherry Blossom", but Su sings "kitsune, kitsune" (fox, fox). This could be interpreted as a reference to Babymetal's divergence from their idol origins in Sakura Gakuin. Anyway, in the music, lyrics and also in the dance, Japanese traditions and traditional attitudes to women are subverted. The peak of this comes when Su shouts "Otome wa nametara ikan zeyo" or "Maidens should not be underestimated" and in the video threateningly draws a knife from her microphone or in concerts does a front kick. Foxes are also associated with Inari, the Japanese god of rice, abundance and now also material success in business. I think linking the "Fox God" to Babymetal is their producer Kobametal having a bit of a joke and what better mascot for a commercial venture.

Nice & welcome back & thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。 In a recent interview Su-Metal said (1) This song is mixture of various elements ; very fast but smooth, hard but beautiful etc. (2) The tune and choreo have Japanesque flavor which may attract overseas fans. (3) This is her tuning song because it includes necessary factors for singing in a well-balanced manner. So she always sings Megitsune in rehearsal to confirm her vocal condition. Su actually said "in a sense, it is a song of criterion for me". (source : Tokion Vol.7 2020-12-24)

The pig squeals were fun. The knife from the mic was accompanied with a famous Yakuza movie quote. In Japan the streets are safe for women more because of the Yakuza than the police; because they aren't restricted by brutality rules. Nightlife in cities is vital to the economy and Yakuza will not let creeps destroy it.
