Speaking of Buddhism, as you were, "Godfrey"-as you said, meaning literally "good peace"-has its literal counterpart in Japanese: 良安. This is a given name and has appeared as such in Japanese Buddhism. Though I doubt that's the reference. Presumably the lyrics' transcription was done by a Japanese person, whether the lyricists themselves or a staffer at Amuse or whoever, and how on earth would they/he/she come up with "Godfrey" by mistake? Difficult to imagine that it's a mistake. It's far more likely a Japanese person sitting at a keyboard would type "Go free" (what you suggest Su is singing) than mistype it as "Godfrey". (Speaking of "cultural context".) We don't hear Su (clearly) say the "d", but are you certain she doesn't say it? I think it's safer to assume the lyrics mean to say "Godfrey". But then, as you say, what does "Godfrey" mean here? I don't know. Anyhow, arguing that a set of lyrics must be mistranscribed because you can't make sense of part of them as they are is problematic. Yes, it's possible the lyrics were mistranscribed, but more likely they are as they're meant to be-whatever that is.

I have a bad habit of leaving a comment before I watch your videos sometimes but its because i get excited when I see new ones haha. This is top 3 for me from the new album..VERY excited to finallt figure out who Godfrey is but ... I imagine like a lot of Babymetal songs, there is no answer 😂

This might sound stupid but I always assumed it is referring to the Game Elden Ring in a way, specifically the boss Godfrey, the first Elden Lord. These might be coincidences, but facts: You face Godfrey in a huge maze like city ("amazing maze") and you die a lot ("game over") and start again from the same point, over and over again until you beat him. Even more so, later you face him AGAIN in the city. So it feels like this endless repeating task. "Confused time after time. Lost and lost, game is over" Godfrey is one of the fastest bosses in the whole game and he swings his huge axe like a merry-go-round and he attacks in circles and even more so he swings his axe in a moebius strip motion (!!!!) and he also sends out shock waves (time waves?), he is clearly the "god of motion". Also in the game you are "Running timelessly towards the new world" to become the new Elden Lord to start a new epoch in time. But I think it could also clearly be a confirmation bias, but the first time I heard the lyrics i made this instant connection. And everyone that played the game knows what I mean.

Until to pointed it out it was a mental block, I would've sworn she had pronounced the "D". That's what I was expecting because I watched it with the lyrics first, but listening to it, it's obvious she doesn't. Perhaps some interviewer will ask Su about that and we'll get the final answer. It would be even funnier if it was a spellcheck error because someone missed the space between the words.

Regarding Godfrey, when I first hear it, I did in fact think she said, "Go free" (I am Japanese), but immediately thought I had made a mistake when I read the lyrics, and once in print (being an old unsuspecting Japanese) thought none of it until you brought it up! I agree Go free makes more sense. Regarding this song, one thought comes to mind... if they were moving inside a normal (non-twisted) loop, they would also be going around and around with no beginning and no end... but since I am a huge BABYMETAL fan, which always give you hope of some kind... with a Mobis strip, at least you get to see both sides.

I fully accept that there was an error in the transcription. More than one actually. When I was first listening via Spotify I had to go back a few times. The Spotify lyrics do match the lyric sheet. But I clearly hear "[I] feel the *god* of emotion" and then "I feel *the* god of motion" the second time. I say this with some confidence because of how the words are laid on the melody. The leading "I" even comes a beat ahead for the first instance. And I hear the same in both the studio track and the live recording. I do not hear the line "There isn't an ending..." I hear "There's an ending..." And again I hear this clearly in both studio and live. So, Godfrey... Familiar to me as a surname because of Arthur Godfrey the mid-20th century entertainer. There is only the studio track since in the live this is on the backing track (stating the obvious). Unfortunately, my first listen was through a mono speaker instead of with IEMs. So I had to go back and check the lyrics because I did not clearly understand what was sung. After that I caught the earworm prion disease even though it made no sense. Now, I concur: "Go free!" Excellent commentary in the postscript.

Excellent analysis, thanks. I have the Japanese CD and had looked up the lyrics to Time Wave and was surprised by "Godfrey" in there. Additionally, since every line is half Japanese and half English, and my Japanese is minimal, it`s impossible to pick up the full meaning of the lines. So "Godfrey" was a puzzle in a puzzle. Presumably the song-writer(s) provide BABYMETAL, including SU-METAL of course, with written lyrics. I`m glad you agree the SU is 'probably' singing it right! We do not question The Queen. She does seem to be particularly meticulous in everything she does. So you might think then that the same piece of paper goes to the lyrics type-setters. I agree with you then that "Godfrey" is a mistake and wonder whether there is a guilty type-setter somewhere who thought they knew better. I did briefly wonder also whether it was "God-free", but that doesn`t really tie in with other God references in the song, let alone the Fox God himself, or herself. So thanks again for both the analysis to clear up "Godfrey", which I didn`t understand and is likely "Go free", and introducing me to the full English translation. "Go Free" makes sense. However, I wonder, given the following lines mention "god of motion", that it's "god free". The lyrics seem to point to a cycle that we're stuck in and repeats, but even so we must keep moving. Unlocking the "god of motion", or realizing it is within us, allows us to continue on, despite the uncertainty.

every time i watch your videos dissecting the lyrics, i come to a conclusion. many people think Babymetal is just fun but learning the lyrics it comes to me that whoever writes the lyrics and puts the song together is so deep. i love this song when it came out and love it even more understanding some of the meanings. Babymetal has always been positive with their messages in the song but it is so much deeper than i once thought. this latest cd is so good. to me it is so mature from what they had put out before. but even though it may or may not mean exactly what you say it means, it doesn't take away from the idea that this band is on another level with their songs. to me even though they created the genre kawaii metal, i feel that even Babymetal is on its own a genre. they can never be put in a box. they do their own thing no matter what. no other band can perform so many different styles of music and all are good. yes there are bands that make different sounding styles but no where near like what Babymetal does but that is just my opinion.

Transcription error (or typo) do make sense a lot. After watching your video, I hastened to check fan-cams that filmed "Time Wave" performed in UK. It seemed to me that Su was singing "Go Free" without "d" sound. (It was possibly recorded sound) Even if this issue was cleared, many mysterious words are strewn in the lyrics to lead or mislead us to somewhere as usual. Somewhere philosophic or spiritual as you suggested. (That is what creative artists or fantasists do - sigh -) * Mobius strip * 'come to the end' - 'it's time to start' - merry-go-round * game over * amazing maze ... Wait a minute. Is BABYMETAL leading us to nowhere ? I do not think so. The concept of "Time Wave" is explained as "Transition" in the TOO album. This song was performed on Day-1 at Pia Arena MM for the first time, the eve of the rebirth of BABYMETAL. Team BABYMETAL was alluding to forthcoming new era, I believe.

Time Wave is my favorite song on THE OTHER ONE. It's hard to put it into words that do it justice. There's just this sense of maturity and intrigue that I love about it. BABYMETAL has a really unique quality where they are able to make songs that are simultaneously uplifting and melancholic. Many of my favorite songs, movies, etc. fall into that category and I wish that I had a better way of describing it. It works so well for me because I find it hard to be 100% optimistic or 100% pessimistic in life. Happiness tinged with longing or depression with a glimmer of hope. It makes everything feel more sincere and impactful. BABYMETAL always seems to find a way to feel inspirational without feeling overly sentimental or disingenuous.

However, one point I would like to make, regarding your final comments of a song that is “difficult” to deduce the meaning by audience: While I mostly agree, I think there is a major exception. Case and point, your past video on From Dusk Till Dawn. You made a point regarding Su purposely keeping her mouth “covered” by mic, and enunciation of some of the words that is tough to make out. Nicely done. The Godfrey thing is funny to me. Since it was some time before I read the lyrics. I never heard Godfrey. I heard it as go free from the start and since translations of their lyrics have been messed up before. I just glossed over the stated line of it being Godfrey. Overall, I thought the song was about something many successful artist struggle with sometimes. They want to move on from something great they did. But their audience only thinks of them in the context of that one great thing they did. Child stars like the ones from Disney shows have had this problem. And have seemed to go a bit nuts as adults just to break away from that image from when they were kids. They also sometimes have trouble getting new acting jobs because casting directors want the kid. Not the adult actor who grew up. So they have to hear about how great they are but that is only in context to when they were a kid. It takes a lot to "go free" from this. Myle Cyris comes to mind. Who was Hannah Montana on the Disney show. But has had a successful singing career since then. But many folks only think of her as Hannah Montana. For other artist it can hit them even harder when they themselves can't get passed something they did. And start to think I can't do better so what's the point. I did my masterpiece. I can do no better. Some have even committed suicide over this. I can see how the lyrics relate to Babymetal in a lot of ways. They were child stars, Baby is in their name, many can't get passed the time with the 3 original members even though their 3rd album is awesome. Stuck in a mobious strip. Go free really was the only words I heard. Also for just the every day person who are emotionally stuck in place this song can have great meaning. Which is why I love the lyric writing of Babymetal songs. As the listener you can make such an emotional connection to their songs. Don't think, feel. Babymetal magic. Even when trapped in another amazing maze again as long as I got incredible music to get me through the day its ok. Babymetal because it makes me happy

It really sounds out of place and I never heard of Godfeey before (me as a German of course know author Gottfried Keller etc. but it really doesn't fit in this song). Typos in lyric sheets aren't that rare btw I've seen it a couple of times in some records.

Yes!!! I know I wasn't the only fan who wondered at the absolute randomness of "Godfrey" appearing in this song and why he needs to hold on! So bloody random!

Since I first heard the song (without lyrics printed) I clearly thought "go free" (I'm neither native Japanese nor Englisch/American). Now only seeing the title of your video I didn't think of any relation to the lyrics. As soon as you started to hint at "Godfrey" being part of the lyrics and even elaborated it "excessively" I thought "Oh, what have I missed the whole time?". But then I was relieved that you 'literally' brought me back down to earth 🙂 Another thought on the lyrics being "official": I am not really into the habits of music industry but couldn't it be plausible that the production company and the distribution company (for the CDs) are different companies and that the production company simply sells the rights for distribution to another company (along with some obligations regarding cover design etc.). Then the distribution company thought: "Oh, let's add some value for the customers. Hey, intern, go and retrieve the lyrics from this Internet thing so we can print them in the booklet."

Two comments: a wave also moves up and down (like a merry-go-round); it gives the appearance of moving forward yet the body of water does not move, the wave is a form of motion which _passes through_ the water. Like people in an audience doing the wave, they move up and down yet remain in place. So the time wave in the song could be like that: a type of change which appears to, and intuitively feels like, forward motion, yet what is affected by it remains in the same place. The other thing is that you didn't address the repeated use of "game" in the song. To me it doesn't fit easily in with the other themes you did cover. (As for Godfrey, from the first time I saw that word used I did think it was a mistake, however it may have come about, and the lyric as sung was go free. Probably like many did.)

I went along for the whole ride and dont feel disappointed. When do I ever get the chance to learn something about the origin and use of Godfrey (yes, l'm a total nerd). Loved this video! Literally my favorite song from the album. :) This may be a silly question, but have you considered doing a lyrical analysis video like this for a broader category of artists? In particular I'd find it interesting to hear this sort of careful approach applied to artists who have notoriously vague or difficult to interpret lyrics (at least in the view of the average audience member). Some examples that come to mind are Kurt Cobain (vague but incredibly popular) and Aesop Rock (moderately successful despite often requiring a broad knowledge of literature to get all the references). Not exactly the existing oeuvre of the channel, but might be fun.

Let's assume there was no misprint or mistranscription in the officially published lyrics in the form of attached prints to the album. Su saw the phrase "Godfrey." and thought how to utter it when singing the song. She got it was a two-syllable word and thought she had to put the word properly in the given measure. The former syllable ends with a consonant "d" and also the latter syllable starts with another consonant "f" so she had to be careful about not inserting an unnecessary vowel between them. So, she paid attention to ending the former syllable without letting her tongue apart from the upper palate of her mouth. That might feel listeners as if she uttered "go-" instead of "god-" there. On the contrary, in the phrase "god of motion", the first syllable ends with a consonant and the second syllable starts with a vowel so those two tend to be connected as if to sound "do". That is how I heard her sing those parts including "Godfrey.", as a Japanese speaker.

When I close my eyes, I hear SU sing “Go free,” I think she closes her throat after saying “Go,” which is unnatural in a native English speaker who would begin creating the “f” sound (a”fricative ”?) while they are still expelling air and voicing the “o” sound. That unexpected hard stop is easy to interpret as a consonant. But close you eyes and you might hear just a brief silence between “Go” and “free,” as when speaking in Katakana.

Clearly a random Dad’s Army reference. It’s the only possible explanation. (I always heard Go Free)…..Anyway. Always enjoy your videos, particularly on BABYMETAL, keep up the good work.

It was an obvious mistake from my understanding to. My first reaction when I saw it was "Who the heck garbled this!" . But I have to admit I never found the alternative "Go free" although Su clearly sings it.

On a slightly(?) unrelated note, I'm always impressed (which might not be the proper word either) that Su sings a line, partially in Japanese, and partially in English, and it works and flows. Not sure this came across how I wanted to express it, but I just wanted to express that.

On a close listen, armed with this interpretation, the 'd' appears to almost disappear.

One thought on this: BM claims lyrics in BxMxC include "Want some beat" and even put that on the video screens. Seems clear to me that this is *really* "wasabi". They claim the lyrics in Awadama Fever are "our hour Awadama Fever" but that's of course just "awa awa awadama". I think they treat these transcriptions playfully, and that might be what happened here, even if "Go free" is what was underlyingly intended, the "Godfrey" in the lyrics may still not be an actual mistake.

Thanks for your analysis. Makes totally sense to me. While I totally agree with your final statement on perception of art, it got me thinking about Babymetal and your walkthroughs. BM songs have pretty dense layers of meaning, so much so that hundreds and often thousands of people come to your lectures. Obviously, we can't do it alone. And it is not just about Japanese language and culture, as you are also using your literary training ans stage production expertise to get us on track. Does this make BM songs in some way elitist? I do not think so, but for a number of songs beeing thinking and open-minded listener is clearly not enough. By far. It's about different levels of accessability. This comes to a head with "From Dusk Til Dawn", where it is hardly possible to agree on the lyrics in the first place. As a consequence, I'm trying to listen to that song without paying too much attention to the lyrics, but taking it on as an instrumental and just enjoy the emotions and random associations that are triggered by the sounds. This could work with any song, but most of the time the loss of meaning would be far too severesevere.

Godfrey is obviously the character from "Dad's Army". Much as I love BM we have to guard against self indulgence in interpreting a song particularly those of BM who themselves indulge in lore. I end up agreeing with the interpretation of it being a mistake as on first listening I heard Su sing "Go free" and that fits the feeling of the song. Sometimes it's best just to experience the song and feel it. Also the word "Mobius" should never be used in a song. It maybe a wonderful and ancient topological space, but the word is not beautiful and it's syllables don't fit well into a melody. Just as a suggestion, but I'd be interested to hear your interpretation of AG's "Toryanse" video; how many symbols of success, good fortune and celebration can you see? Its a fun game.

If "God of emotion" can be transcribed as "God of motion", "go free" being transcribed as "Godfrey" is surely possible. Providing lyrics for their songs is something Babymetal have not done previously. How much effort was placed on quality control of the translation? Was someone from Team Babymetal even involved? I guess only the Fox Godfrey knows. Weaving English words into their songs is something common among many Japanese artists but I often wonder how that process occurs. Why choose this English word to be placed there? When foreign phrases are added into songs in English, generally it's obvious to us why they are there. Not so in Japanese music (at least to me). I had thought that at the tour finale, The Other One would be performed in its entirety and would be presented with lore between each connecting the ten songs to create a cohesive story. I also don't think she's really saying "Godfrey." However, every time I hear that (with the subtitles) I can't help but think of that clip from the early 80s movie version of Silas Marner, where Squire Cass is about to hold his New Year's party and he screams out "GODFREY!!" (...."your lady love's on the way") Other than Godfrey Cass, one of Richard the Lionheart's brothers was Godfrey I believe. I think instead of "Godfrey" it's probably something like, "Don't breathe, just focus." She just finished saying "feel it." And remember her other phrase, "don't think, feel." So I'm thinking it's something similar to that being said. Also, the idea that it's a "codified mistake" seems reasonable, considering the BM KZfaq channel refers to iine as "Line." If I got a chance to interview them, I'd definitely ask Su who Godfrey is. And I'd ask Moa what SHE thinks of Tina.

When the Babymetal's album, The Other One, first came out, Timewave was probably my least favourite track. Perhaps it was too poppy, when I was looking for a heavier sound from the album. However, after what feels like a thousand listens, this song has become one of my favourite songs on TOO. I have always been perplexed by the Godfrey lyric. I have always heard the words as Go Free, however, people have assured me that Godfrey is the correct lyric. That it is in the official lyrics released by Babymetal. But it just didn't make any sense. I always likened the word Godfrey here to the lyrics of From Dusk Til Dawn. There are some hashed up interpretations of the FDTD lyrics as well. Most closed captions are clearly not correct, but people run with them. I do understand the difference between lyrics being provided by the artist and the lyrics not being provided by the artist, as in FDTD's case. Until watching your video, I had seen no evidence that Godfrey was included in the official lyrics. This would, understandably, lead the listener to accept the written lyric and not what is clearly being vocalized. However, Godfrey never made any sense to me (even after the loose interpretation of it being God's Friend or similar interpretations being explained to me). It just didn't feel right. Thankyou Professor, for making me feel that I am not alone in thinking that Godfrey is a transcription error, or at the very least, a mondegreen. I feel better now.

With 'Godfrey' on screen, it's hard not to hear a consonant before 'frey'. I never bought 'Godfrey' as an actual lyric, but 'Got free'. That might be biased by having 'Godfrey' on screen. It's known that a subtitle can change what you hear. Or even someone telling you what's being said, e.g. Electronic voice phenomena on ghost hunter shows.

Do you think this could be a mistake, and it was left in intentionally? Wouldn't be the first time. Like the fox sign, they showed the girls Ronnie James Dio making the horns, and they made shadow puppet foxes, and no one corrected it. In some of the Nendo tests when Su made a mistake, she would just double down on it. Like DeLorean, Power Udon, or Harry the Witch. They have such a sense of humor which is largely unseen. They could just be messing with us, which is a Babymetal kind of thing if you think about it. Thing is, Su-metal has exceptional clarity when singing. She is a perfectionist. She didn't miss the "d". I don't care if it's English, her diction is always spot on. I can't think of another singer who forms her consonants with such precision. I do not believe she made a mistake.
