> "This is not one of the strongest songs of BABYMETAL." Yeah... Because it's no BABYMETAL song. It was a cover version only performed once on this special occasion. It's from Suzuka's birth year 1997. The show was "Legend 1997" (you may see the connection) and yes, it's the one with the iconic performance of "BABYMETAL DEATH". P.S.: To make it clear... The Kami-Band, to all our knowledge, never wore the bone suits on stage. And you can clearly see at several performances, that the BABYBONES do not really play the instruments. Not even to the extent that Yui and Moa played their guitars on the APMAs in 2016...

Hey David, as a patreon I'll be honest with you. As much as I like your reactions, I really didn't enjoy this one. Not because you didn't like the song, it's not their best and I appreciate being honest. I didn't enjoy this one because you explain yourself too much and saying same things over and over. Just say it straight, I promise BM fans won't crucify you, we really do appreciate honesty.

It’s probably because of fanboys who insist everything an artist does is great. I’ve had Beatle fans tell me I’m not a “true fan” because I don’t love EVERY SONG THEY DID. It’s made him defensive, I guess. Some people can be trolls.

Good honest reaction and I can't think anybody would have any objection to your score for this song, but you did labour the point a bit. You justified your opinions, we all understood (and the vast majority probably agreed). For clarification: - If you see the statue, yes that was the Legend 1997 concert for Su-metal's 16th birthday - they only had that stage set up for the one concert. - The guys in skeleton suits were NOT the Kami Band. The Babybones were actors, dancers or staff members, not musicians and the instrumentals when they were on stage were pre-recorded. At this concert the Kami Band played the 5 encore songs (which included that performance of 'BABYMETAL Death' that you saw). Legend 1997 was the last time the Babybones guys were on stage at a big concert (they did do a couple of shows in Singapore and Taiwan early in 2014), the Kami Band became the full time support from the Budokan shows at the start of March 2014. This was a one-time-only performance by Su-metal covering this song - it is not a BABYMETAL song. It was a huge number 1 hit in Japan in 1997, this was her version to celebrate her 16th birthday (that was also what all the preamble with 'Land Of Hope And Glory' playing over the top of the narration was about).

Thanks for coming back with more BM songs. Beautiful cover of a song especially for her 16th birthday on Legend 1997 (yep the same one you saw BMD, there's no other show with that imagery behind), sadly it wasn't performed again, it's exclusive for those who witnessed this moment, just like every legend they made. She own this song and the crowd there love it every second. I already told you something about this Legend 1997 on previous comment and its relationship with the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth, which fits perfectly with the theme and concept of the whole recital. Remember this was SuMetal 16th Birthday and the celebration and sacrifice of her j-pop idol form and reborn into a metal goddess queen. The title translates as "Soul's Refrain" and is a cover of Yoko Takahashi made in 1997 (Suzuka's birthyear) for NGE movie, is a Jpop ballad and basically deals with the request and longing for a desired love to return or rebirth. This is "kamishibai" (intro narration) traslation i found: _Second Impact, in the winter of 1997, it was the birth of the new warrior 'SU-METAL' who transcends the way of this world. She was charged with the mission of Metal Resistance and challenged to fight taking her own life on the legendary '15th Birthday Night.' In 2013, SU-METAL accomplished Metal Resistance and steadily made legends in many of the festivals. After that, she returned to the Holy Mother in preparation for the birth of the new goddess. The Holy Mother said "The souls repeat the cycle of birth and death. Return to me... retracing your memory..."_ The last sentence line is the first line of "Tamashii No Rufuran" lyrics. I saw a fancam vid from this song a certain time ago, not here in YT, and sound was really good as far as i remember, not the footage thou, thing is SuMetal can deliver anywhere, just look that stage pressence and dance movements i bet that was one of the moments when MikikoMetal (the choreographer) said to her "how did you do that?" and SuMetal not knowing what she was talking about lol During that year 2013 SuMetal (yes, she alone and as SuMetal) participated in a project called JAM Metal Project, along with other famous artists linked to the world of covers of anime songs turned into metal or just "metalized", in fact the male singer of that group did the opening of Dragon Ball in its original Japanese version, there was also another woman, (I don't remember the names, sorry). I know that previously they had another famous group called "Animetal" and their compilations and hooks of that type of songs are known, so SuMetal was surrounded by experts and I have no doubt that she had a great time on stage, unfortunately there is no film record of that moment, only a few photos here and there but if you are interested in listening to an audio you can find it here, under that name, is not very long, not even the entire recital, but it's something, I think haha But well that is already very deep down in the Foxhole so it would be for much later and you can listen to it in your own time, not that a reaction is necessary, but do as you wish. Oh the JAM Project band continued to play and they even have several anime songs made by them with millions of views on YT, iirc i saw the "One Punch Man" song played in Yokohama and the drummer they brought was Hideki Aoyama, yes , the Kami Band drummer, impressive show. About the band playing behind, it was the "baby-bones" mimicking air playing instruments, none of them are Kami Band members, the Kami Band show up later during the encore section for the final 5 songs on this concert. David, i like your reactions and breakdowns but there's no need to rant about the score and how about BM fans will rate or take this, we all very much agree that BM have no bad song, that doesn't mean we all like and rate as top tier every single song, it doesn't work like that, i myself have just a few couple of songs that i don't listen so much time, i don't skip it, but on my playlist i prefer others songs, that's all, and everyone got their favorites. This song is a one off performance and cover, it's special in the context i mentioned before and as a whole, is a blast if you compare this with the original, and is even more special if you watch this near SuMetal's birthday next December 20. Once again thank you for sharing your reaction to this special moment in the life and career of SuMetal. Kitsune up! 🦊🤘🔥

That JAM Project thing was a one-off guest appearance by Su-metal. Yui and Moa were doing a Sakura Gakuin engagement the same weekend. The male vocalist with JAM is an old music buddy of Su-'s father. So he is the real deal as fukei go.

Tamashi No Rufuran:- Fast drums but dramatic and powerful. As far as I know it's only available on the 1997 concert. I love this song so much. The way Su preforms leaves me speechless and can't take my eyes off of her. Soul's refrain Your naked skin wrapped in blue shadows Trembles quietly in this moment Your fingertip searches for me, As if asking for the whereabouts of life The you that was embraced by fate Blooms in season like an ephemeral flower Leaving behind the scent of hope on your chest Scattering hurriedly in splendid form Please come back to me, Before you are born To the earth you spent your days on Please come back into my arms, To meet again Miracles do happen, however many times Soul's refrain When eyes are closed as if in prayer The world simply disappears there into the darkness Even so, my heartbeat starts again Looking for a bounded eternity Please come back to me, Following memories To the source of gentleness and dreams. You, too, please come back, So we can love each other. Heart and body repeat Soul's refrain Please come back to me, Before you are born To the earth you spent your days on Please come back into my arms To meet again Miracles do happen, however many times Soul's refrain Song Notes: -Tamashi No Rufuran was released on October 29 of 2014 included in the "Live Legend 1999/1997 Apocalypse" DVD. -The song was recorded at Makuhari Messi at Legend 1997 Su-Meta Seitansai Show. -The song debuted live the same date was recorded. -Su-Metal solo at vocals, cover of the original song by Yoko akahashi released on 1997 and lead song of the anime movie "Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth" "Yoko Takahashi":- Yoko Takahashi (高橋 洋子, Takahashi Yōko, born August 28, 1966) is a Japanese singer, who is best known for her work throughout the 1990s, most particularly for her singles which were performed for and featured in anime, most notably the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. Objectively, I'd have to say that this is nowhere near the quality and utter epicness of some of their biggest showpieces but neither is it up there with any of their 'lesser' songs or even, IMHO, any of Babymetal's songs. It's not theirs and was playing more to the Japanese crowd who knew it from a popular anime of the time than anything else. Maybe the ultimate arbiter of its value is shown by the fact that Amuse let it through! 🦊🤘🤘🦊 Anyway, putting this behind us...Babymetal have released 2 MV's from their upcoming (March 2023) album, The Other One. They are both superb and Su's voice has noticeably matured to a silky smooth vibrato with even more power and depth. The 1st song, Divine Attack, is the kind of Metal song that makes you say "I want the album now!" The 2nd song, Monochrome, makes you pre-order it today! And Amuse seem to be allowing reactors to react to them!

Yes, this is from the same show as Babymetal Death, the version that you reacted to on your channel. This song only makes sense in the context or the 1997 Apocalypse concert. The concert traced Babymetal's growth and more particularly Su's journey from being Suzuka Nakmoto, a JPop Idol to becoming a goddess of metal in Babymetal Death. (This concert followed a theme and could even be considered a concept concert, where the songs laid out Babymetal's journey. There was a beginning, a middle and an end to this concert, which was really rewarding). However, this song had to be included in the journey. It was an important part of Babymetal's early work. Not their own song (a cover), which explains many things. I like to look at this song as a reference point, a touchstone if you like. When people say that Su doesn't sing live, I can point them to this song. In this concert the only missed notes or pitch problems were in this song. Why? Simply because it wasn't their song, so the hours and hours of work that goes into every other Babymetal song simply wasn't there. This showed here in Su's vocals, the sound levels and mixing and the choreography. Personally, I don't like this song. However, I respect the courage to put an underworked cover into this show, just to retain continuity of their journey. Certainly not Babymetal's best work, but important in their development, nonetheless.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。 As a BM fan I check and subscribe to your channel because I am interested in your honest opinion. (I am even a Patreon member). Your score as a connoisseur is quite reasonable. In my opinion, the reason why this performance in 2013 impresses BM fans is that we strongly feel Su's passionate efforts to make this concert dramatically successful. As other viewers commented, this song is not BM's original but a cover one. The original singer is a veteran with very matured voice. Su tried to cover this hard song to add some adulty contrast to BM's average setlist at that time. The 16-year old girl did it with full capacity she had. That posture moves me even if the low tone makes her immature voice unstable. I, as an eyewitness of BM's latest shows at Budokan, believe she can do it perfectly now.

It would have been fairer for you to have known beforehand that it was a cover :) In early Babymetal shows, they used to do quite some covers, since they didn't have enough originals. You have to consider that they hadn't released their first album yet :D The Babybones in skeleton suit are not real musicians, the Kami Band was never in them. They were just actors paid to pretend. Your comment about actually being the Kami Band it surprised me, since i never saw anyone say that the Kami Band was inside those suits. Yes, this was the same show where "Babymetal Death", "Gimme Chocolate" and "Headbanger" you reacted to came from :D

Hello David and no I will never come for head when speaking politely and openly. I appreciate this song for many reasons. First; if everything were top notch, the meaning would be worthless! In other words there is no light without darkness. Secondly; if there is no room for growth Su would not have achieved her current level of talent. Still I have fallen so far into the Fox Hole, I’ve come to enjoy it for what it is. A great performance for the time and a good song. Take Care and don’t be a stranger, we still welcome your reactions.

Good reaction and appreciate your honesty. Being this a cover song, I will take no offense. 😁 But I still consider this one of Su-metal's best performances overall. Despite her vocals are so low in the mix. And specially because of her work on stage and being just 16 back then. And yes, "Akatsuki" is still my favorite song of all times and very few songs are at the same level in my opinion. The guys in skeleton costumes are there miming to play the instruments. 100% sure. The Kami Band appeared later that night for the encore. They wear white robes (now dark) and face paint (now masks). Keep in mind that this is a really early live performance (December 2013) and their biggest concert at the time (9.000 people). Koba probably hired better sound technicians after this. 😁 Until next time!

You should listen to the original for comparison lol. I really like the cover and what Babymetal did to make it their own. Jake already gave you all the details, so no need to dive into all of it again. 😂 And yes, that is the same show Legend 1997 that you did the reaction to “Babymetal Death” to. Btw no need to apologize in any shape for your scoring, being honest is what I always liked about your reactions. PS: Babymetal fans are usually very open and friendly and don’t rip anyone apart because they have a different opinion. Not sure where your statement is based on that BM fans will rip you apart because of your honest opinion.

Well, at this point you are getting memed again by your patreons. Gimme Chocolate and Doki Doki Morning all over again. Tamashii No Rufuran is a good one-time performance for hardcore BM fans but in no way representative. There are so many core songs like Yava, Syncopation, Star Light which deserve a deeper analysis. But I'm afraid that you will react to the Legend 1999 solos in the near future. Well, you had a good run; I hope you watch the Tokyo Dome concerts in your free time and discover songs more to your liking.

Hi David, if you are reading this hope your are having a good day. First of all I belive this song is a cover. In the early years Babymetal did some covers of I believe of famous songs in Japan and maybe other countries but don't know. This song cover done by Sumetal I would give an 7.8 to 8 out of 10. I think this song is nice for a more calming effect and not needing to be too high energy. I think they could of raised the vocals some how in the low parts since like you said the instruments drowned out her low singing parts. Many other songs better than this song, but I will deffently listen to this cover now and then since it is not bad at all. I enjoyed the difference in style in singing lower and melodic feel. I hope you are still interested in the other covers since they are also iconic to the time periods even though not all being amazing. Only 1 cover I would say is an amazing cover by Babymetal and that is Kimi To Anime Ga Mitai at the Budokan and it is also probably one of the most Kawaii Metal songs done by them very well. This cover was the most done out of all of them and I believe only time thay did it with live instrumentals when at the Budokan and was also the last time since they finally had enough songs to play live. I also believe they changed the lyrics to respond to the original lyrics of that original song, I am not the best knowing these cover translations so I can't say much on lyrics. The other covers I believe don't have live instrumentals since they took place during the Bones band time when they hadn't gotten the funds to pay for a real band. However, there is one other cover concert I believe during this time that was when Sumetal sang with Jam Metal to sing three covers. This was doen twice, however only audio has existed and a few photos of those concerts. Pretty interesting fact. There other covers later on done with other artists for some songs just for fun and not too serious singing. Hope you keep enjoying these Babymetal songs and covers if you keep wanting to do more. Have a better day anyone reading this and stay safe.

Haha, I could see that sigh of relieve coming from the beginning. I also expected the song not be your cup of tea. But I'm OK with that, especially since it's not an original BABYMETAL song. The show is indeed the same one that you saw BABYMETAL DEATH from, the special show for Su's 16th birthday (hence the little picture show at the beginning). And that's why they featured this cover version of a song from Su's birth year. The original is much more ballad-like. Personally, I think it's their best cover version by far, and I really like the song. But I agree that it doesn't compare to their original songs. I would say the chorus suits Su, the verses not so much. The skeletons band is NOT the Kami band, and they are not playing the instruments. At that specific show, the Kami band only appeared in the encore. I don't know why anyone would tell you otherwise.

A BabyMetal that didn't get block!? Cool. 7.7? Wow, for a cover song and a song that might have been slightly out of her range at that time. That's a great score. Great video and can't wait for the other ones coming up this month. Bring on the Su-Metal Month.

As a Babymetal fan, I completely agree. I don't know why some fans love this song so much, I just... I don't get it. It's a cover. The song was big in Japan the year Sue was born and was done for a 16th birthday tribute. I personally love the anime Neon Geneses Evangelion and was surprised to see it. I guess Koba Metal is a fan too, 'cause another song from the show closes out the Legend 1999 concert. I'm not upset with the review, but this song held a place in my heart during the late 1990's. Be honest always, which you are; which is why I'm a patreon. Now relax.

Hi, David. I have to agree with laughing buddha: Relax, bro! I mostly agree with all of your points. Using your scoring system I gave this a 7.8 ahead of hearing your score. Nevertheless, as one of those Su-metal fan boys, I *love* this performance! And I love the roar from the audience when they recognize the song. While I agree there is an issue with the mix during the lower pitches in the verses, Su- sang this in the original key and it really should have been brought up a step or two. Failing that, they should have done some EQ to help out. The song is almost too big for just turned 16 Su-metal. (I think current Su-metal could blow the vocals out of the park without a key change. So was probably the best choice to not change the key in case of revisiting later.) I really like this metal arrangement of the song. I came out of the 70's leaving early metal and hard rock behind to follow contemporary jazz, fusion and adjacent genres. So one might think I would prefer the original arrangement. It is really good, but nope, give me that amped up metal rhythm section and that full metal jacket backing. 🤘🦊🔥 Subjectively, the song/performance fits more like an 8.9 on my play lists despite its objective shortcomings.

Very cool reaction! This song is a cover, theme from an anime movie. I think Su chose this song to sing solo in this concert. This is the first part of the concert, still with the scenographic band. The Kamis come for a mega encore, playing with yiu and moa in "onedari daisakusen", then "catch me if you can", still without the intro with band solos, the girls interact for a long time with the fans before starting singing, then a headbanger with the gong at the end, another stop, narrated excerpt from the legend, acoustic akatsuki (only Su and piano) and then an epic version of "Death!" which has great reaction here on the DH channel! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/frmkY9qE1Nqzm6c.html If you can and are curious, try to see the end of legend D(December/2012), first "crucifixion" of su...

It is a testament to Baby Metal's legacy that scoring a good score of 7.7 is considered disappointing. Giving this song a 9 would diminish that legacy. Every hit can't be a homerun, and hitting doubles is pretty good.

I agree with you, D, on the subject of being objective. I was a biggest King Diamond fan in 80-s. I have collected all 5 his solo albums (86-87-88-89-90) and all MercyFul Fate albums. But when I heard what KD and MF have recorded after 1990 (The Eye) even though i was a biggest fan - I just couldnt say "it matches the level of previous albums". And I stopped listen to new KD works because I saw he began to repeat himself. No offense to KD. Most of bands can not say they have even 1 great album while KD had a whole gallery of masterpieces. Bur being objective - means an ability to admit when your favorite artist doesnt do impressive job.

first. it can not be compared to the others since it is not a Babymetal song. this is Babymetal covering a song from 1997, the year Su was born. and you cant compare since the baby bones were acting as a band. to me I only appreciate Su in this song. her vocal range is what gets me. just my opinion. for your info. if you dont want to do a slow song from Babymetal. dont do Akatsuki, the unfinished version. it is the version that it is only Su and a piano. we are ok with what you said because we know it is not a true Babymetal song so we let it slide.

With so many amazing BABYMETAL songs, I don't know why a one time cover is requested. But it was requested, so here we are. I do love all things BABYMETAL but I don't think this is a good way to keep someone else's interest in a band especially when it's a one time cover and a very little known song. Definitely will never come for your head. I think requesting this was a waste of your time. Su did well, but I would stick to actual BABYMETAL songs. 🤘🦊🤘

The song is a cover version BABYMETAL performed only once. I know perfectly well that it is not very good. You may keep your head. One might argue that this metallized version is better than the original. BABYMETAL performed in front of the statue only once: The Legend 1997 concert on December 21, 2013. That was one day after Su's 16th birthday. You reacted to at least 3 songs from the same day already: Gimme Chocolate, Headbanger and BABYMETAL DEATH. The people in skeleton suits are not the Kami band. They are called babybones. From the BABYMETAL wiki: "Babybones is a mime band dressed in skeleton costumes, that BABYMETAL used as backing band before Kami band. They do not play the instruments."

Yeah I knew exactly how this reaction was going to go as soon as I saw which song you were reacting to. You really don't need to hedge your bets like this, man. Any fan who only wants to hear glowing reviews shouldn't be watching reactions to B-Tier songs. This barely belongs in the same conversation as Akatsuki. For the early years, it's a pretty rare case of Su tackling a lower register, which I think makes it special for many fans. I'm not going to tell you how to do reactions, but let me tell you how this felt from the viewer side. What's coming across is your negative reaction to the expected fan response, not your reaction to the song itself, which is actually positive. It really undermines the idea that there's nothing wrong with getting (barely) less than an 8 if you keep making apologies for it. The tone of this reaction made it feel like you were giving it a 4. The number kind of didn't matter anymore by the time you got to it.

Not Infuriated at all Mate! To me this song was Not the best fit for Su's vocal range at that time. From what I can sketchily recall this is a Cover of a famous singer's Anime song decades old (not sure how old, hopefully The One will have the exact info, & the name of the original female singer). Apparently, most of the Japanese audience are/were familiar with the song to justify Koba having Su sing it. That said the song's lower vocal register didn't impress me at all. A very rare miss for Koba though!

Nice honest reaction. For me this song is like or equivalent to just about anytime a rock band takes a popular sing and rocks it out. As a musician when doing this it becomes hard to move past the source material. Meaning your version can only be as good as the music will let it be. When bands first start as you mat well know they just about all have to do covers to fill out a whole concert. Making this just a filler song. It's cool because they're doing it. But what makes it great for me is that it shows how much better actual Babymetal songs are. It's just a good song that's it. Her performance is better than the song. As in her showmanship of presenting it. They did 5 covers back then. One of them was from the jpop group Su was with before Babymetal. Few groups really make covers great. 7.7 for me turns out really good. It's not like the kamiband was playing behind her. That might have changed the score a bit. Ok alot. The skeleton guys are NOT THE KAMIBAND MEMEBRS. They do a decent job faking it. But hey if that was the kamiband guys why bother with that. Which is why that idea gets thrown out for me. All in all it's just time to go back to actual Babymetal songs.

Knowledge is a wonderful thing. As many others have pointed out, this is not an original BabyMetal song. To the best of my knowledge, the song has not been been performed live for years as BabyMetal have two more albums of material, since this was sung here. Not sure why this was even requested as it is not a BabyMetal song plus it is with the mime artists. I am mystified on this 60/40 about the band? It is so bloody obvious that the skeleton band (AKA Mr Bones) is miming, that even total non musical people can see the guitars and drums are not playing what we hear. A very fair score from you and please don't concern yourself in future about upsetting BabyMetal fans. No matter what you say or explain there will always be a vociferous minority who will be out with the pitch forks. 😀

Honestly, I don't think this performance is good to show other person .. not their original, not meaningfully related with the group, and to be hoenst, not perfectly executed... In 2013, they had only 4 singles, not regular album, so they didn't have enough number of songs for their own concert. That is the reason why it was performed. For me, it is just "Su-metal sang a very famous anime song." that's all. + this show is Legend "1997". The Kami band played only parts of whole setlists in 2013.

Wont disagree it's not the best BabyMetal song 😁 it's not a BabyMetal song. Sometimes, looking at the description helps . you really should have looked at how well Su covered a popular song at 16 years old . You might have given it an 8 . The band is not playing the guiters, and they look like they are cardboard seen close-up or even rubber . The necks of the guiters were wobbly in one show . Think the one's who said they are playing might have said their real, meaning, the masks the band now wear . If they meant the skeleton costumes, they were too busy looking at the pŕetty girls to notice the wobbly guiters 🤣 Don't worry. The pitchfork and burning torches are still in the garden shed . Dead right here bud. Babymetal has basically reinvented this whole genre of performative metal music, but as much as I love them, arguably as my favorite metal band in the last 20 years, they have some terrible songs. Gimme Chocolate, ii ne, etc. just cringe when I hear it. But then you contrast that with RoR or many others just really highlights such a dramatic shift from meh to holy shit that was the best thing ever. The band is a rollercoaster. I am almost wondering if thats part of the charm. Luckily their shit songs aren't as much as their kickass songs. Just careful about weeb recommendations. the 10/10 for all their songs crowd who will force you to watch hours of SG footage to confirm their weird fetishes.
