I find this performance beautiful. It takes the original to whole new level and it's executed so well by Su and the musicians. This is one of my many favorites by BABYMETAL. It's for sure the best cover I've heard by any band because they didn't just perform it better, they completely revamped it into something powerful.

Original song was an ending theme for the first anime Evangelion film, “Death and Rebirth” (1997). Evangelion was a TV series and manga earlier. Lyrics of the song are about rebirth, and the title 魂のルフラン "Soul’s Refrain" is refrained in the lyrics. Some Eva. fans have linked the lyrics to the Buddhist concept of rebirth 輪廻 (Rinne). Song's been covered by many artists in Japan including rock bands Mary’s Blood (saw that cover live) and Soramimi (Nemophila Tamu’s old band).

Fantastic as always. I have not heard this song too many times. I've really only heard it while watching the whole show the few times I did.

THIS song/performance from Su holds the number 1 spot of my favourite Babymetal song.... Yeah, its a cover, but Su makes it her own. 🤘🦊🤘

The original makes me feel more like it belongs in a sci-fi anime/movie. With Su-s version I don't have the feeling. (much better for me) And by imagining which movie it could go with, there was a nostalgia trip back to childhood. In this anime, the rule was that only girls 14 years old could board the giant robot. However, the main character was a boy chosen as a singularity. SU METAL was boarding BABYMETAL at the same age as the character in this anime. The song contains the lyrics "Go back to before you were born in me," suggesting the relationship between the girl in the story and the protagonist boy, as well as explaining the permanence of life.

I wish Babymetal still did these 1 off songs every now and again. Obviously now they have a lot more songs of their own to fit into a show but 1 off surprises would still be nice.

excellent content Glass Moon-Metal, Su could sing the menu at KFC and I am all in...lol so yeah this song was a number one hit in Japan in 1997. It is my favorite cover that they do, along with "Animation with You" and "Painkiller/Breaking the Law" btw, it is the only time they ever played this song.

When Babymetal 'metalize' a song it becomes something else. Because this was never released on an album or anything we don't know who worked on it, but my believe after first time hearing songs like this: team Babymetal really know how to do arrangements, Master crafters. It's almost sad they don't do that anymore. And kind of amazing they did it just for one show (which also applies to everything else: the whole set and lighting, etc. production is out of this world, almost on purpose because a Babymetal show experience is meant to be a sort of 'other world' experience, not related to the real world outside of the venue). If they did it more often it more easily shows to people what they can do. But what they do now isn't that much different. They take tropes from a music (sub)genre as inspiration and create their own original songs. Like some extremely advanced cover band. 🙂I'm 100% certain they could do it the other way around as well: create a ballad from a metal song or some J-pop/techno version of a metal song. In this performance you can see Su just stays in one place and even with a cover she owns this crowd. The original is good but this takes it to another level.

It's sad, because this is the only performance of this song by Su which is a shame because YES, a KAMI BAND version of this would be EPIC! Not an actual BABYMETAL song but one of my favorite Su solos. This is honestly her song now.

Beautiful cover of a song especially for her 16th birthday on Legend 1997, sadly it wasn't performed again, it's exclusive for those who witnessed this moment, just like every legend they made. I totally agree she own this song and the crowd there love it every second. I already told you something about this Legend 1997 on previous comment and its relationship with the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth, which fits perfectly with the theme and concept of the whole recital. You got it right, is about SuMetal 16th Birthday and the celebration and sacrifice of her j-pop idol form and reborn into a metal goddess queen. The title translates as "Soul's Refrain" and is a cover of Yoko Takahashi made in 1997 (Suzuka's birthyear) for NGE movie, is a Jpop ballad and basically deals with the request and longing for a desired love to return or rebirth. This is "kamishibai" (intro narration) traslation i found: _Second Impact, in the winter of 1997, it was the birth of the new warrior 'SU-METAL' who transcends the way of this world. She was charged with the mission of Metal Resistance and challenged to fight taking her own life on the legendary '15th Birthday Night.' In 2013, SU-METAL accomplished Metal Resistance and steadily made legends in many of the festivals. After that, she returned to the Holy Mother in preparation for the birth of the new goddess. The Holy Mother said "The souls repeat the cycle of birth and death. Return to me... retracing your memory..."_ The last sentence line is the first line of "Tamashii No Rufuran" lyrics. I saw a fancam vid from this song a certain time ago, not here in YT, and sound was really good as far as i remember, not the footage thou, thing is SuMetal can deliver anywhere, just look that stage pressence and dance movements i bet that was one of the moments when MikikoMetal (the choreographer) said to her "how did you do that?" and SuMetal not knowing what she was talking about lol During that year 2013 SuMetal (yes, she alone and as SuMetal) participated in a project called JAM Metal Project, along with other famous artists linked to the world of covers of anime songs turned into metal or just "metalized", in fact the male singer of that group did the opening of Dragon Ball in its original Japanese version, there was also another woman, (I don't remember the names, sorry). I know that previously they had another famous group called "Animetal" and their compilations and hooks of that type of songs are known, so SuMetal was surrounded by experts and I have no doubt that she had a great time on stage, unfortunately there is no film record of that moment, only a few photos here and there but if you are interested in listening to an audio you can find it here, under that name, is not very long, not even the entire recital, but it's something, I think haha But well that is already very deep down in the Foxhole so it would be for much later and you can listen to it in your own time, not that a reaction is necessary, but do as you wish. Great reaction. This was a one time only performance of this song by Su-metal. The only covers I can think of that they have played more than once are 'Kimi To Anime Ga Mitai' (about 25 times) and their mash up of Judas Priest's 'Painkiller' and 'Breaking the Law' (just twice I think - first time with Rob Halford than again with Chad Smith from RHCP on drums). In my opinion BABYMETAL have improved on any song they have covered - maybe I'm not entirely objective, but for me it is true. The original for this one was sung beautifully without question, but Su just added so much more emotion and feeling and she didn't just sing it, she performed it ... and she was just 16 of course. Du-metal has translations for all the introductions/kamishibai from before shows, before songs, at the end of concerts etc from the early concerts on his blog site.

Su bringing that charisma! I believe this was the fourth song in their setlist at Legend 1997. Musically it reminds me of Moa's solo cover version of Morning Musume's "Love Machine" that she performed at Legend 1999.

I can’t agree more with you and as others have said, Babymetal took the song, ramped it up by 1000 and totally made it their own. In my (totally not biased opinion) this version is so much better than the original. Unfortunately, as Grington said, this was the only time Su performed the song but damn did she slay it with such confidence. The opening still gives me chills to this day and I have listened to the song probably 500 times by now.

Great reaction, thanks! There is a moment when a cover becomes a version and team BABYMETAL just did it. And when you have an incredibly versatile vocalist as Su-metal leading, things are easier. In my opinion (and i might be a bit biased), the BABYMETAL version arrangements and Su's performance destroy the original. Actually, this is one of my favorite solo live performances by Su. Tamashi No Rufuran:- Fast drums but dramatic and powerful. As far as I know it's only available on the 1997 concert. I love this song so much. The way Su preforms leaves me speechless and can't take my eyes off of her. ⚡ 🎶 🎂 Since 'Tamashii no Rufuran' (Soul's Refrain) was the theme song for the first film in the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, most people in that audience would have recognized it immediately. The film and Yoko Takahashi's performance of the song were both released in Su-metal's birth year, 1997. This song fits the theme of sacrifice they had for the December 2013 'Legend 1997' concert. Can we assume that Su's solo cover of 'White Love' from 'LEGEND D' is on your radar? And of course Yui and Moa each had a solo cover at 'LEGEND 1999', their birthday show. 'Chokotto Love' for Yui, and 'Love Machine' for Moa.

This song was prepared for this show. I believe that Su's choice is the legend 1997, referring to his year of birth. In legend 1999, yui and moa tbem sing solo, each singing a song prepared for that performance. Yui sings Chokotto Love(Petit Moni cover), Moa sings Love Machine(Morning Musume cover).

I won't even claim to be anywhere near objective in this matter, but it's one of the few instances where I prefer the cover version. The original is not a bad song, but I don't get that usual feeling of "oh, this really sounds like it's the way the song was intended to sound". And from all of BABYMETAL's cover versions this takes the top spot by far, in my opinion. It's the only one that makes me think "this could really be an original BABYMETAL song".

Comparison is the mother of all fuck ups. At least when you bring Su-Metal in the equation. Seeing her, listening to her sing this song takes my breath away, and nothing or nobody can disturb that.
