An exhausted mom asked me for help with night weaning her 7 month old, who wakes frequently throughtout the night and has to be rocked to sleep each time.
When your baby is younger, feeding or rocking your baby to sleep works and helps them sleep well. But your baby is developing. Her sleep patterns change as she grows to become more like an adult’s sleep patterns. It’s a great sign, but waking throughout the night and not being able to self-settle is often a sign that your baby needs to learn to fall asleep, and stay asleep, on their own.
Signs that your baby’s sleep pattern is changing:
• Restlessness
• Difficulties falling & staying asleep
Step 1: Set a healthy sleep foundation
The best way to fix baby sleep is by setting a healthy sleep foundation, before we fix the night wakings.
Biologically appropriate bedtime:
• If your 7 month old has 3 naps/day, bedtime should be between 7: 30- 8: 30 pm.
• If your 7 month old has 2 naps/day, bedtime should be between 7-8pm
Tip: Keep track of nap times to find an ideal and appropriate bedtime.
When babies get overtired, it causes them to fight bedtime, wake more often and wake earlier in the morning.
Peaceful Bedtime Routine:
This is a routine of consistent activities that take place at a specific time, in a specific order every night to help your baby settle down for the night.
Your baby gets consistent behavioural cues, to cue her body and her mind to relax and get ready to sleep.
Start a bedtime routine through my Exhausted Mom's Starter Kit:
www.babysleepmadesimple.com/h...
Watch Awake Times
Babies and toddlers have a biological need to sleep often during the day. Your 7 month old needs to sleep every 2-3 hours consistently throughout the day, every day. Babies are wired differently, so the better a baby sleeps in the day, the better they will sleep at night.
If the last awake time is too long, it could really affect her night sleep and make her wake more often.
Step 2: Night Weaning
A sleep association is the condition or the prop that a baby associates and so needs to fall asleep.
There are independent sleep associations like white noise, or her sleepsack. Dependent sleep associations require your assistance, like rocking or feeding to sleep, or replacing a pacifier.
Now she’s getting older, we want to slowly wean off you helping her get back to sleep. If a baby has only ever been rocked or fed to sleep, they won’t know how to fall asleep alone.
Night Feedings
Most 7 month olds can be weaned down to 1 night feed - check with your pediatrician first. Many can fully wean off night feeds.
I have a guide on my website called ‘Weaning Night Feedings’. It will help you determine when your baby is ready to wean off night feedings, and also how to do it.
How to Stop Rocking Your Baby to Sleep
A Gentle Method: Good for sensitive/affectionate children
1. Do your bedtime routine
2. Rock her until she’s drowsy, but don’t let her fall asleep
3. Slowly and quietly put her in her bed as she starts to relax and doze off
4. She will probably complain, so you will give her lots of hands-on support while keeping her in her bed. Pat her, rock her side to side, touch her head.
5. If she gets really inconsolable, pick her up, calm her down and then put her back in her bed.
6. She will start to get used to it. Wean off hands-on support and give verbal reassurance instead.
7. Wean off the verbal support and gradually remove yourself from the room
You'll get less crying with this method, but it does take 2-3 weeks.
A Quicker Method:
Similar to the Ferber method or Controlled Crying.
1. Do your bedtime routine
2. Put baby in her bed
3. Leave the room for about 3 minutes
4. Come back and give some quick comfort to your baby
5. Leave room again for 5 minutes this time (increase each time if possible)

Thanks for your videos! I just knew your channel. And it’s very helpful. I have 7 month old and sleep is disastrous. To start, we have bedtime routine but it’s always a disaster because he starts to cry in bath, then to putting on clothes, still fussy and crying. Then i feed him to sleep but needs pacifier afterwards. Then he wakes up at 10pm, 11pm, 1am, 3am, 5am, 6am. I feed him every time he wakes up because this is the only way he knows how to sleep. I’m very very tired already. 😢

Yes teething can often disrupt sleep. Soak a washcloth in chamomile tea, then freeze it. Allow baby to suck on the washcloth at bedtime. The cold numbs the pain and the chamomile reduces inflammation. Or, of course, a cold teething toy works well too. Good luck!

When I fist started sleep training last week I would go in and pat my son on the back. He was comforted by this and would relax and go back to sleep. But after a week his response changed. Now he gets so mad if I didn't pick him up. So I stopped going in. I seems to upset him more. So not I'm not going in at all. He cries but seems to go back to bed. I hope he's ok and the crying gets less and less. Thanks for your videos. Love them!

It’s a great video with great advice. I’m just wondering if I can use these techniques with baby with severe reflux? As I have to keep him upright for at least half an hour and can never put him to bed drowsy
@Babysleepmadesimple
@Babysleepmadesimple 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, You can definitely still apply these techniques to your LO with reflux. You just have to modify a bit! Alyssa, BSMS Support Team
@alexandrialynn723
@alexandrialynn723 3 жыл бұрын
I did this with my reflux baby but I modified it to what he needed. He is a very assertive baby and does not cry unless he is upset rather than hungry, scared, etc so I had to do the cry it out method. I waited until his vomiting turned into spit ups at 4 months and I especially made sure he ate enough during the day. As a reflux baby it’s important to make sure they are eating enough calories for their weight in order to sleep at night. My baby is very tall and heavy for his age. 18lbs and 26.4 inches at 4 months old so he needs the calories of a 6 month old during the day (with the exception of maybe 1-2 feedings at night) in order to feel fully satiated so that he can sleep through the night. I hope this helps.

This is hard on parents that both work and have opposite schedules. If i put my baby to bed by 8 pm....he will be awake around 6 am.. when my husband has just gone to sleep and when I am getting ready for work.
@Babysleepmadesimple
@Babysleepmadesimple 5 жыл бұрын
Yes having parents on opposite schedules takes some customizing. Most parents want a bedtime that will help their baby sleep as well as possible overnight, and typically earlier bedtimes do this. But you can certainly try a later bedtime if that works better for your schedules. I hope it does! All the best, Jilly

I feel that’s really hard once babies are older (around 1 year) and they stand up in the crib. Might even be dangerous leaving them crying there alone as they might try to climb out…
@Babysleepmadesimple
@Babysleepmadesimple Жыл бұрын
Hi Alessandra, It is definitely an added challenge when our babies start to get taller! However, sleep sacks can be VERY helpful. Not only does it keep babies warm all night long (in a safe way), but it can be a deterrent for climbing out of the crib. We have helped train hundreds of babies over 1 year of age and the majority don't try to climb out! Best, Alyssa, BSMS Team

Hi! First of all thank you for this video, it came in a time of great need for us. My baby is 6 months old and currently co sleeping with me in the bed. He has short feedings during the night almost every hour and, even though I'm exhausted, I don't mind it that much, but I'm concerned about the fact that he seems to be tired all the time now. My husband insisted on trying the Ferber method - I'm kind of against it - but it failed on our fist try. Our baby never sleeps on his tummy and, even though he mastered rolling over from back to tummy very early on, he seems to get stuck when he's on his tummy and, as a result, cries uncontrollably. I'm not comfortable with doing the Ferber method knowing he can't chose a sleeping position to his liking. What do you advise us to do? I want to give the gentle method described in the video a try, but when I pick my baby up and he's crying, he starts searching for my breast and gets even more upset if I don't offer it to him. - I'd like to wean him from night feedings because I'm pretty sure nursing is a sleep association for him, as he's eating well during the day and is quite chunky. Thank you!!
@Babysleepmadesimple
@Babysleepmadesimple 5 жыл бұрын
At 6 months your baby can learn the skill of settling himself to sleep. When he can fall asleep on his own at bedtime, he'll be able to resettle himself any time he stirs during the night (without needing to nurse.) Sleeping longer stretches will help him and you not be so tired during the day. (Plus it helps babies eat better during the day too. ) You don't have to do Ferber. There are MANY ways to teach babies to self-settle. I recommend starting with my Exhausted Mom's Survival Kit. This is where I walk you through exactly what to do to help your baby settle easier and sleep longer. You can sign up for it here: www.babysleepmadesimple.com/exhausted-moms-survival-kit After you've gone through the kit and are doing the steps, we work on getting baby falling asleep on his own. After the age of 5 months, babies DO have this ability. We just have to guide them. I help parents do this everyday in my program, 21 Days to Peace & Quiet: www.babysleepmadesimple.com/21-days-to-peace-quiet-program It's definitely possible to get your little guy sleeping better. Check out the above links and let me know if you have any questions. All the best, Jilly

Hi! Babies rolling onto their tummy in the night can be so scary! You don’t need to reposition your baby, unless they're upset. Once a baby is freely rolling back to front, and vice versa, it’s fine to leave them. This means they have the muscle strength to move themselves into comfortable positions and ensures that they can move their head and neck at will. Here’s some info from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Rolling over is an important and natural part of your baby’s growth. Most babies start rolling over on their own around 4-6 months of age. If your baby rolls over on her own during sleep, you do not need to turn her back over onto her back. The important thing is that your baby starts every sleep time on her back to reduce the risk of SIDS. And also that there are no soft objects, toys, crib bumpers, or loose bedding under baby, over baby, or anywhere in baby’s sleep area. (source: www.nichd.nih.gov/sts/about/Pages/faq.aspx) * AND NO WEDGES OR POSITIONERS IN BABY’S BED! If baby rolls onto her tummy and gets frustrated because she can’t roll into a more comfortable position, you may need to help her onto her back temporarily. This is normally a very short phase (less than one week.) Give baby lots of open floor time during the day to practice rolling and build strength. Good luck! / Leena, BSMS Support Team

My 8 month old baby who is used to co-sleeping and breastfeeding. We are trying to get him to fall asleep on his own in his own bed, but the problem is that he always sits up on his own immediately when i lay him down. How best to tackle it?

Hello Maria! Thanks so much for reaching out to us. Teaching your LO to fall asleep on his own is definitely the best way to help ensure he learns to sleep throughout the night independently. This is a wonderful and vital skill! I would give your LO lots of sitting practice time during the day. Sometimes though, it can be helpful to just give your LO space to lay himself down in the middle of the night. In our 21 Days to Peace and Quiet program, we help parents conquer sleep training step by step. We would love to support your family too! He eats and zonks right back out 🤷🏻‍♀️ so I feed him so I can sleep He goes to bed at 7:30 and I put him in the crib and he puts himself to sleep! He wakes up around 7am happy as a clam But at 11pm and 4am it’s hysterics -

I’m trying to get my 10 month old into her crib from co-sleeping, one of our biggest problems is she wants to nurse back to sleep every time she wakes (often). However, I work overnights 3 to 5 nights a week depending on rotation and she stays with my sister while I work. Not only does she sleep up to 4 hours in the play pen at my sisters, MUCH longer than I’ve ever managed in the crib, but she also will take her pacifier and just go back to sleep. Do you think if I move her crib to her own room this could help? It’s currently in my room at the end of my bed. The gentle method has not been working for us very well but I refuse to just let her scream it out… please help! 😭 Thanks for the tips!

Hi Carrera! Are you currently trying one of our programs? Or, is it another gentle method? At this age many children thrive in their own sleep space and do really well in their own cribs. In our 21 Days to Peace & Quiet program, we go over how to transition out of co-sleeping in lots of detail. I would highly recommend checking it out; here is the link: www.babysleepmadesimple.com/baby-sleep-consultant. Please let us know if you have any additional questions, we would be happy to help! Hello Courtney, Thanks so much for your message! Is your LO falling asleep at the breast? If so, that could be the reason your LO is waking up so often. Nursing to sleep is a sleep association and we really want our LO's to fall asleep independently so that they can STTN. I would highly recommend checking out our sleep program. We teach you step by step how to get your LO to night wean and fall asleep independently. We’re currently having a Spring Sale. This gives you 30 days of personal support with our sleep training program, 21 Days to Peace & Quiet. Jilly walks you through each step and shows you exactly what to do every night. There are several factors in how to get your baby to sleep. One resource I discovered which succeeds in merging these is the Calmer Fixer Blueprint (check it out on google) it's the most useful resource i've heard of. look at the great information .

These methods didn’t work for my baby either. He simply had to cry it out. BUT that doesn’t mean it won’t work for someone else. What helped me the most was making sure my baby ate enough calories during the day for his weight to properly sleep during the night, blackout curtains, white noise, setting a strict nighttime routine (jolly jumper 5-6pm, bath 6-6:30pm, down at 7 when he was rubbing his eyes but still awake) and then sticking to that while I trained him. Hope this helps ❤️

My baby is 7 months. We are co sleeping and she still has small night feeds. The pediatrician gave us the okay to cut off night feeds at 6 months. I want to start sleep training now! She's teething now, badly..so should I wait? ..also her crib is in my room, should I move it out and begin sleep training, or start with it in my room then once she gets better sleeping through, move her out? Not sure if creating a whole new environment will make it better or worse 🤔
@Babysleepmadesimple
@Babysleepmadesimple 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jamesha, If your baby is teething badly (crying, fussy, not eating well, chewing on everything and restless) then I wouldn't start sleep training. Waiting just 2-3 days can make the process go easier. I recommend you sleep train baby where you want her sleeping long-term, so move her crib into her bedroom when or before you begin. Have her hang out in her bedroom during the day so she can get used to it. I find that babies adapt to switching bedrooms pretty easily. It's more of a big deal for us moms! Having a video monitor can really ease your worries. It sounds like you're ready to begin! I recommend you begin at bedtime. The way that your baby falls asleep at bedtime sets her up to sleep well at night. My free Exhausted Mom's Survival Kit walks you through what to do. You can sign up for it here: www.babysleepmadesimple.com/exhausted-mom-survival-kit Good luck! Jilly

My 8 mo old has been sleep trained since 2 mo old we were co sleeping up until 7mo he went back to his bed. He has no problem going to bed at his normal bedtime which is 8:30pm and he would wake up every morning around 7am. He has a good dinner at 7pm followed by a 6oz bottle with cereal. Normally that would get him through the night and he would sleep straight through until 7am. But since he turned 8mo old on Aug 13 he is waking up every 4 hours wanting a bottle of formula. I tried replacing it with water but that doesn't work he has a fit. What can I do?
@BMmeryem
@BMmeryem 5 жыл бұрын
Hello! Why would you replace the formula with water? I think your baby is having a growth spurt and needs to eat more to get through the night, don't worry too much about it. I would give him the first bottle around midnight and then give him his pacifier until 7 or 8 am.

He doesn't take a pacifie he's not. a pacifier baby he hates pacifiers and if I give him a bottle at 12am he wakes up wanting another one at 3am and then another bottle when he wakes up at 7am his normal time He just started this when he turned 8mo on Aug 13. I understand he may be going thru a growth spurt but there has to be other options right?

@@tammytherealistdtb1070 hi, no worries there is no such a thing as an overweight baby so I would advise you feed on demand because they go through growhh spurt and you want to make sure he gets all the nutrients he needs. Feed him when he's hungry and don't worry about his weight. If it's once or twice a night I think its reasonable. I know many people try to make baby stop feeding early for convenience sake but I personally don't think its good for them to be hungry. Good luck xx
