In the 'Brandenburg' Concerto No. 4 in G major, performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, Bach is continually misleading us. Which instruments are the real soloists? Initially, the lead is taken by the two recorders, but later it appears that the violin is the soloist. After the next refrain, the two recorders take over again, but they are soon trumped by the violin, which steals the show in a whirlwind of dizzying notes. And so it continues.

For those who don't know about the story behind Bach's Brandenburg concertos. In 1721, Bach composed six “concertos for various instruments”. He dedicated them to a German nobleman and sent the manuscript as a gift, hoping to land a job as the court composer in Brandenburg. The nobleman never replied. Bach eventually took another job in Leipzig, where he lived for the rest of his life. Bach had send his original and there were no copies. The 6 concertos were lost for 130 years. They were never performed. The manuscript was eventually sold for about $20 and shelved in a library. The Brandenburg Concertos sat there until 1849, when they were discovered and published for the first time. Thank god.

It’s odd to think that the Brandenburg Concertos went from essentially being forgotten and stuffed into a junk drawer for over a century to being fired into deep space as an example of the best that humanity has to offer.

@2:45 I find that episode one of the most intriguing in the whole repertoire of Baroque music... it is the most sublime duet exchange between two solo instruments when suddenly we get a suspended note from the other soloist and suddenly the explosion of energy from the violin like we've never heard before. Then those dissonant intervals between the recordings! Truly an exceptional composition.

Clipping, no, but it sounds 'washed' to me, and it is produced well enough I could toss that up to the room instead of a tech. The lead violinist is incredible, but he's conducting, and that steals something from the acoustic delivery.

@Elisha Maam This quote from a letter written by Bach's son Carl Philipp Emanuel to Johann Nikolaus Forkel (Bach's first biographer) might interest you: "He [J. S. Bach] heard the slightest wrong note even in the largest combinations. As the greatest expert and judge of harmony, he liked best to play the viola, with appropriate loudness and softness. In his youth and until the approach of old age, he played the violin cleanly and penetratingly, and thus kept the orchestra in better order than he could have done with the harpsichord. He understood to perfection the possibilities of all stringed instruments."

Well, he was trained to become a town musician which in the era meant that he must have been able to play almost all instruments (string and wind) to some extent and to master some of them. He clearly was a master of the violin, the cello and of course the organ and the harpsichord. He was a decent flute player. He also must've been a good singer (how else he would have been able to train the Thomanerchor for 20 years... )

Danke an Netherlands Bach Society! Sie zeigen uns immer wieder das Wunder, wenn Menschen im Gleichklang und Harmonie gemeinsam Wunder erschaffen.

Great performance! As a recorder player myself, I had to laugh when I saw Sato make that smirk 2:45 going like: "Sweet little solo guys!" and then he goes mental on his part haha. That being said the recorder part is played beautifully and is pretty challenging at a speed like this.

It remembers me on my youth when I played the violin at an small chamber orchestra and my sister played the 1st recorder and a young woman the 2nd. The solo violin played a musician from the well-known Gewandhaus orchestra and I had violin lessons with him later. The woman with the 2nd recorder became his wife later. Ma sister became an organist and choir conductor later, and she also has a recorder group . She played a concerto with this work at a village at the south of Berlin shortly, they made a taking-on but I cannot find the music at the Internet if I go on the website. But this is also very good, probably even better.
