BWV 1000 for Lute (G minor) BWV 1001 for Violin (G minor) BWV 539 for Organ (D minor) They are all pretty much the same. Guitarists usually study a Lute version transposed to A minor.

Concertista MUY GRANDE!!

This is my favourite piece to perform because it is breathtakingly beautiful. It was Julian Breams rendition of this piece that informed my playing it more that any other. I remember spending weeks learning about the performance practices of this period and of Bach's fugues in particular. I wanted to be able to explain the reason or reasons for every single interpretative choice that I made. It took a full six months of learning and living with this fugue before I felt ready to perform it. Why so long? Well, I was influenced by David Russell, who spends a full year learning and playing a piece at half tempo, before he finally spends a week (and only one week) playing it at tempo, after which he is ready to perform. There is no piece that is as rewarding to play as this one. Probably the most serious mistake people make when learning a piece of music is practicing at too quick a tempo. The tempo should always come naturally and never be forced. I loved this fugue so much that I wanted to learn all of it immediately, but I understood that I would learn it much more solidly if I limited myself to learning one section per week. I divided this piece into about twelve sections. After the twelve weeks, I had this fugue performance ready, which is pretty quick for a piece of such complexity. This fugue changed my whole approach to practicing, and I've saved a lot of time as a result.

There's a new classical guitarists named Stephanie Jones. She's as good if not better. I've listened to Bream for years and listened closely. She's a new treasure
@CanadianDivergent2 ай бұрын
@@andrew3979 no she isn't as good. she has good technique but Parkening and Bream have an unmatched Timbre and tone. Jones doesn't use apoyando the way masters of this generation do. granted she is a great player but Millennials lack in interpretation and colouring that the post Segovia Russel/Bream, Williams/Parkening School has inmho.
@andrew3979Ай бұрын
@@CanadianDivergent she's extraordinary. I don't like the idea of someone new taking the place of the founding fathers of classical guitar but I know without a shadow of a doubt bream would be deeply moved and impressed by her playing. I've heard her live and I've listened to EVERYTHING classical guitar on KZfaq. She's up there. Especially at her age.
@CanadianDivergentАй бұрын
@@andrew3979 Oh absolutely there is no question she is a great player. I agree that the masters of the last generation would have loved the next level players, such as Jones, My observations are that the younger generation have more technical facility, but as mentioned they use far more free stroke,...and maybe that IS a better way to play, IDK? I just think the golden era was when we had Bream, Parkening, Williams, and then Russell is kinda the last one of that era, and it was a golden era of playing. I personally don't think Jones is anywhere close to Russell when it comes to technique. he is the pinnacle of that. his Bach is practically Flawless. the new generation is just different, no less of great players, just the approach is much different.

In art, When it comes to masters, I believe its not wise to compare them. Some comment williams is better than Bream, Yepes is the best, Romero is better etc. The fact is that every virtuoso has his/her unique quality and essence which nobody else could performe and this is what made them masters! For me, when I want to listen to bach I go for sollscher but, for this special fugue I definitly listen to Bream's version. If you play guitar and want to play this, I recommend you to watch his master class carefully which I believe is one of the best master classes recorded ever!

I'm no guitar player but I remember that a friend who was a very good pianist and also a sax player explained to me that great classical players always made mistakes in a concert but it was not bum notes !! They just made the mistakes sound as if they were right, just not the notes from the original score. I've got a whole double CD of Lute and violin music by JS Bach adapted for guitar, by guitarist Eduardo Fernandes. This one is also a really beautiful version.
@maltfusion67439 жыл бұрын
There are modern robot players that can probably play that piece cleaner but good luck trying to fill the hall with that Breamsound that just oozes from the instrument. He's a throwback to the golden era of performing like Cortot, Ysaye and Rubinstein who didn't give a fuck about notes.
