The words of the opening chorus of this cantata - recorded here for All of Bach with Hans-Christoph Rademann - are imbued with Old Testament strictness. God has decreed what he demands of you: keeping to his word, being humble and practising love. To Bach's music, this enumeration takes on a cheerful and light-hearted character.

@@jensnitsche4994, do you have a source for this statement? I thought that contemporary accounts of reactions to Bach's music were very rare, so would love to know more. In any event, I am willing to bet that, with just one or two days to learn all the music, one or two rehearsals, and an early morning performance in an unheated church while the congregation engaged in social interactions, NBS's superlative performances are the stuff that Bach could only have dreamt of.

@@tvanbast Nun, hier in Deutschland gibt es noch viele erhaltene Dokumente bezüglich Bach. Ein erhaltenes ist eine Ermahnung an ihn von seinen Vorgesetzten in der Kirche: Er verwende zu viele Töne und die Gemeinde sei verwirrt. Er möchte das unterlassen! Gott sei Dank für die Nachwelt, es war ihm egal. Und richtig, Bach hatte wohl nie die Gelegenheit, seine Kompositionen in dieser Qualität zu hören. Er hatte immer Probleme ausreichend Musiker zu finden und diese waren meistens von schlechter Qualität. Wir, heute in der Gegenwart haben das Privileg, diese Musik in der ganzen Pracht erst erfahren zu dürfen!

Eine der für mich schönsten Kantaten Bachs wird hier wunderbar eindringlich und absolut überzeugend musiziert. Sänger und Instumentalisten meistern ihre Aufgabe herrlich unaufgeregt und mit viel innerer Anteilnahme, dabei sind Tempi, Prasierung und Klangbalance aus Sicht der historischen Aufführungspraxis schlicht überzeugend, wirken aber nie dogmatisch. Für mich besteht kein Zweifel: Bach wird zur Zeit nirgendwo gültiger präsentiert wie hier. Und das gilt für alle bisher erarbeiteten Werke. Unendlicher Dank dafür an die NBS!

The NBS performances always leave me wanting more..the singing and playing is fresh, flowing, rhythmical and full of energy. The best around probably. I love the looks on all their faces, thoroughly immersed in the music and enjoying it. Restrained and non distracting conducting always a bonus too!

Lebhafte und wunderschöne Aufführung dieser fein komponierten Kirchenkantate mit gut harmonisierten Stimmen des ausgezeichneten Chors und herrlichen Stimmen dreier genialen Solisten sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Originalinstrumente. Der intelligente und ebenso geniale Dirigent leitet das ebenso ausgezeichnete Barockensemble im rhythmischen Tempo und mit künstlerisch konteollierter Dynamik. Wunderbar vom Anfang bis zum Ende!

Over 90% of Bach's works make me think of the following quote from John Maxwell Coetzee: "The best proof we have that life is good, and therefore that there may perhaps be a God after all, who has our welfare at heart, is that to each of us, on the day we are born, comes the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. It comes as a gift, unearned, unmerited, for free." A life without Bach is possible but meaningless.

The BWV numbers are not chronological. This piece dates from 1726 - well into his career. (Although it is also true that some of his earliest works are also some of his best).

Micah is hardly 'Old Testament strictness' - to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God -- what an invitation -- hardly known in today's extremes of politics. The music is lovely. And your performances are fabulous. Thank you. In fact the Bass solo is clearly New Testament strictness! Interesting to compare Bach with the cantillation.

Redeman has a way to produce fluency of expression along with very saturated sonorities from NBS which he demonstrated in earlier recordings. His Bach is first rate. I only wish he used a female alto, my pet pevee.

This recording was without audience, which gives more options in terms of lighting and camera work. The choice not to play in black is deliberate, to make it more accessible.
