Voices of Music FAQ
Q. How can I support Voices of Music?
A. Donate here: voicesofmusic.org/donate.html and we will make more
videos like this one :) These videos cost thousands of dollars to make, and the money comes from individual donors.
Q. Where can I learn more about this music?
A. You can visit our website, www.voicesofmusic.org/ Also, subscribe to our video channel! Just click on the logo on our videos.
Q. Where can we hear you play in concert?
A. We perform in the San Francisco Bay Area. For a concert schedule, visit our website or join our mailing list www.voicesofmusic.org/
Q. Where can I buy CDs?
A. Our CDs are available on iTunes, Google, Amazon, CD Baby and just about everywhere; you can also buy a CD in a jewel case from Kunaki: www.voicesofmusic.org/cds.html
Q. What is Early Music performance, or historical performance?
A. We play on instruments from the time of the composers, and we use the original music and playing techniques: it’s a special sound.
Q. Why are there no conductors?
A. Conductors weren’t invented until the 19th century; since we seek to recreate a historical performance, the music is led from the keyboard or violin, or the music is played as chamber music~or both :)
Q. What are period instruments or original instruments; how are they different from modern instruments?
A. As instruments became modernized in the 19th century, builders and players tended to focus on the volume of sound and the stability of tuning. Modern steel strings replaced the older materials, and instruments were often machine made. Historical instruments, built individually by hand and with overall lighter construction, have extremely complex overtones-which we find delightful. Modern instruments are of course perfectly suited to more modern music.
Q. Why is the pitch lower, or higher?
A. Early Music performance uses many different pitches, and these pitches create different tone colors on the instruments. See goo.gl/pVBNAC
The concerto is surely one of the most complex, entrancing and beautiful of all of the concertos from the baroque period. We invite you to enjoy this timeless moment from the live performance at St. Mark's, San Francisco, performed on original instruments by Voices of Music. Featuring Carla Moore and Cynthia Miller Freivogel, solo baroque violins; Katherine Kyme and Lisa Grodin, baroque violins; David Daniel Bowes, baroque viola; Tanya Tomkins, continuo cello; Farley Pearce, violone, Katherine Heater, baroque organ; David Tayler, archlute.

This movement has had my heart since I was 12. I am now 71. I know it backwards. I have had tears running down my face listening to this beautiful duo. I know of no other piece of music that has captured me for 60 years. My brother's friend played first violin and - of course - I fell in love with him :) But the music from Bach is so entrancing and mindfully destroying and uplifting that I am still in tears and I love this piece of music like no other, Such is its power.

Finally... the perfect, flowing tempo. And such beautiful, organic dynamics plus slight accelerandos here and there... like waves, like leaves in the wind. When you hear Bachs music and you see God´s grace and images of nature in front of your inner eye, then the interpretation is good. When it makes you cry from joy... then it is Bach.

Never heard this concerto on period instruments. Plus I always thought this piece is the most "romantic" work of Bach and would sound funny on the period instruments. However, as soon as I heard the first note of this rendition, my heart stopped beating. The ultimate beauty of pure sound captured me within a second. Bravi tutti!

I don't think they are period instruments, except for the strange lute with the long neck. They are just playing without vibrato. And very skillfully! It's a charming 'style' of the period, though.

In this piece, the theme and the countersubject have equal weight. In baroque style, we try not to use forte at the beginnings of phrases, because the medial suspensions, which occur in harmonic sequences of sevenths and ninths, need to have a shape that fits the harmonic and contrapuntal structure. If you begin the phrase forte, the dissonances either have to be at the same volume as the consonances, or played as a diminuendo, which then reduces the overall harmonic clarity.

The Messa di Voce was the standard training technique for singers and instrumentalists of the baroque. In the messa di voce, the sound builds up and falls away, to create layers. You may think if Bach did not write it in the score, you can't play it, but if you look at different manuscripts you will see different "instructions" and of course, what is left out is what everyone knew. Take away what everyone knew, and you remove the music; take away baroque training, and it in no longer baroque.

I first heard this piece played as a processional many years ago. Although I've always enjoyed hearing it played in various "incarnations" and venues, this rendering by VOM captured my undivided attention from the very start. Rather than listening from a place of familiarity, I listened as if it were something new. This little 'ole concerto just kept unfolding as something very special and new while remaining anchored in its first principles. CONCLUSION: There is just something about this group of musicians that makes the establishment of new truth an beauty a reality....without any divorcement from the past. Thank you VOM for who you are and what you do.

Brief words if I may on music, Bach, and these musicians. As to music in and of itself, music gives expressions to the heart, spirit and soul that simply cannot be expressed otherwise. Indeed, there is substantial and growing neurological data so suggesting. As to Bach, while it is conspicuously true that the human experience has immeasurably benefited by quantums for composers and musicians across all of human experience, across all of human time, there comes from rare time to time someone of incomprehensible improbability of genius, of consequence before then unthinkable - a Black Swan, if I may say. Such is Bach. As to these musicians now at hand throughout the performances of VoM, they each are sublime and faithful channels of the music of the Baroque. Just wildly extraordinary. Such a joy.

@1banders When we prepared the edition for this piece, we did a reconstruction of the violone part based on the holograph Brandenburg Concertos. The bass part must be at 16' pitch owing to the presence of several passages that cross with the viola part, creating an inverted harmony--or an 8' violone was used that sometimes played an octave lower. 16' pitch was of course common on Bach's organs.

Basically, without getting into an essay on the interpretation of baroque music, the best answer is to make a video yourself, showing how you think it should be done. I suggest you read some of the books on baroque performance practice, at the very least read Boyden, Stowell, Muffat & Geminiani, but if you have a strong feeling about the right way to perform something, the video is the way to go, then people can see, hear, and decide for themselves. That's the great thing about KZfaq.
