My son just played this song. He played when he was 9 year old. As I remembered, he cried when he couldn't play it. However, he practiced again and again many times many months. Then, now he can play this.

This piece is quite a lot of fun to play, and does a good job of forcing me to practice with both hands fairly equally. This piece I can play, but still not play perfectly - I hope to have it "mastered" fairly soon. Other than this, Bach's other inventions are quite useful in improving my ability to play piano, and I hope that after another few months practicing them I'll be confident enough to move on to more difficult things. I had originally taught myself two of Scott Joplin's ragtime pieces, but while those are also fun to play - I feel that they aren't as "educational" at these pieces. It always helps to have an audio reference when attempting to learn how to play something, even from sheet music, so I appreciate this piece being here. It also is often difficult to find pieces at a reasonable rhythm either - while I know that pieces like this can be played at almost any speed and still be "correct," it is not very useful to a beginner like myself to have examples of songs being played twice as fast as normal by experts who effectively are showing off their speed. Subjectively speaking, I prefer "not too fast, not too slow" for pieces like this, anyway, as trying to play pieces more quickly than is needed isn't all that pleasant on my ears. This piece is fairly "quick" by beginner standards, but has a very predictable rhythm to it that I think makes it easier to get through.

Practise first one hand each. Then try to slowly put them together. Start slow and gradually build up the speed.

Repeatedly practice the transition passages, especially the one many people mention--measures 19&20. The real work is done using the proper fingering and mastering it. Some of the fingering is not intuitive or consistent, so it falls apart when you get going at around 112 beats per minute for the quarternote. Except for geniuses like Glenn Gould, this piece is typically played "vivace"--quick-- and having your elbows and arms positioned properly to accommodate the wide spans up and down the keyboard is extremely important to maintain hand and finger positions at speed. Feel free to move your upper body left and right to keep the arm doing the most complicated work in the right position so you're not bending your wrists (too) unnaturally. Work on these and you'll fly!

I don't know if it's still difficult for you, I'm still learning it, but at least I've already solved the first part, what I did was study it with a metronome, I hope that helps you. ^.^

It happened exactly the same with me, after not touching the piano for 6 years or more. But what I did was everyday sitting in front of the piano for about 15 minutes and trying to play what I rebembered. Each day, as I was playing, I was "magically" remembering a little part that I had forget, just like recovering pieces from a puzzle. After this first week, I went back to the music sheet to figure out the parts that were totally wiped out from my memory. And just by looking at it a couple of times I managed to get them back. Of course that I could just ignore all that and go straight to the sheet right from the beggining, but it was a very fun and interesting "memory recover" experiment. Give it a try and tell me if it worked. :-)
