This Concerto for Oboe in F major, performed by Emma Black and the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, is a reconstruction of an oboe concerto, based on the keyboard concerto in E major, BWV 1053. Oboists did fairly well out of Bach, as his oeuvre contains more than two hundred oboe solos. They often concern one or two oboes in opening choruses and arias in the cantatas. But the true solo repertoire is sparse. For example, no solo concertos for oboe have survived. There are indications that Bach did indeed compose oboe concertos, whose manuscripts and parts have been lost over the years. For a complete oboe concerto, however, we have to rely on reconstructions, such as this Oboe Concerto in F major BWV 1053r.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on December 6th 2019 at Stadsgehoorzaal, Leiden. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB and consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.
This recording was made with support of L.C.M. Gieles, The Netherlands.

The curious observation is that I can't hear the nuances, nor peer closely at the artists' faces and instruments. Not from the audience can I hear the nuances as I can with these recorded performances. I'm also distracted by the uncomfortable seating, the cold of the building, the loud perfume of the lady in front of me, or the unbelievable coughing from behind me.

She does a very nice job holding it down. This is not an easy piece to play. She balances out ornamentation very well. Not too flashy, not too "style rustico". I noted that she had that quiet moment after ending her solo in the Siciliano that some of us get when we play Bach music. The man had the uncanny ability to reach into your head. Doing so while playing is more profound. The whole group plays well, in a balanced and mature way.

The NBS is one of my favorite groups. Bach, and amazing musicians. I recently started listening to the Baroque Oboe. It has such a richer sound than a typical oboe. This remake of a keyboard piece is so beautiful words can't give it justice. Anazing work!

A few notes about this concert BWV 1053 All three movements of this concerto exist in parallel versions in two cantatas, BWV 169 (in D major and B minor) and BWV 49 (in E major), which were first performed within two weeks of each other ir 1726.In the cantatas, the solo instrument was the organ, with a range of f#°-c#3 But if two low passages are excepted that were not probably part of the original concerto, the range becomes, bo-c#3. This is exactly a semitone lower than the standard range of the hautboy. The solo line also allows places to breathe. Several writers have therefore suggested that this concerto was originally conceived for hautboy a semitone higher, in E flat major. Rifkin reconstructed the piece for hautboy in E flat and recorded it in May 1983 with Stephen Hammer playing the solo. On the basis of copying mistakes in the original parts, Rifkin's argument for E flat is convincing. Still, if an hautboy was the original solo instrument, it seems unlikely that the piece was originally conceived in this key because (with the exception of the second movement, which fits the hautboy well in C minor) it is so awkward and difficult. E flat is a semitone removed from the hautboy's primary scale of D major, with all that that entails in the way of cross-fingerings, etc. It is a particularly challenging key on a technical revel, notably because of the presence of Ab, produced by half-closing hole 3. It was no doubt because of its technical problems that E flat major was rarely used for hautboy solos in the eighteenth century. Bach used it in less than 3 per cent of his hautboy solos, and-when he did, as in BWV 187/5, he exploited the key's unusual characteristics. In this concerto, however, E flat acts merely to create obstacles. It is difficult to see why Bach would have chosen this key when he originally conceived the piece. On the other hand, there is a key that works well: F major, a step higher. In F, with two more natural fingerings per octave, the piece is freer in sound, and the difficulties caused by the presence of Ebs and Abs are eliminated. But there is a further twist. The solo line sounds as good or better on an hautbois d'amour as on the treble hautboy. And when the hautbois d'amour plays in fingered F/D minor/F, it sounds in D/B minor/D, which are the keys of two of the three movements in the cantata versions. It is probably not a coincidence that the two fast movements in the cantata versions have prominent parts for hautbois d'amour. From the beginning of the piece, the first violin's arpeggiated introductory figure sounds better (of course) in D than E flat. In both extant versions (the concerto and the cantata), the last movement is in E. If it is transposed down a step to D, there is a passage in the violin parts that extends below the bottom note of the violin. But this passage succeeds equally well an octave higher; Bach had to keep it low in the organ version because an hautbois d'amour doubled the first violin, and would otherwise have ascended to fingered f3, beyond the instrument's range. In the harpsichord concerto, without the con- straint of the doubling wind part, Bach rewrote this section in a lighter, airier manner, but understandably kept the strings in the lower octave in order not to cover the harpsichord (a consideration that was not necessary for an hautbois d'amour soloist). In fingered F, there is one note in the organ version that exceeds the hautbois d'amour's normal upper range. The analogous measure in the harpsichord concerto takes this note down an octave, along with the first notes of the first and second beats. This is a curious anomaly; on a harpsichord, there is no physical or musical reason to have gone down an octave at this point. The answer is probably that the part was copied from an original for hautbois d'amour, where the octave break was necessary. Bars 13-14, 23-4, and 66-7 in the first movement contain some independent (though unimportant) writing for winds that Bach probably added when arranging the movement for the cantata.

Wonderful contribution, thank you! In one of his essays, GB Shaw commented favorably on the Oboe d’Amor, and suggested it should replace the oboe on a general basis. Having heard each, I like each but certainly understand why Shaw liked the Oboe D’Amor so much.

Oboists however did very well out of Bach's Concerto for Oboe and Violin, one of the most beautiful of all concertos in the classical repertory, with an adagio second movement that can just about break one's heart.
