As Albert Schweitzer once put it, the preludes and fugues of the Well Tempered Clavichord serve as windows onto a superior reality. What they express is not really related to the world we inhabit or even the human condition itself. They represent eternal soul-states or the kinds of emotions a god would feel. Such was the capacity for expression in the art of the absolute rendered possible by Bach's meticulous compositional technique. It's so wonderful that Netherlands Bach Society can draw on a pool of such fantastic musicians who are masters of their instruments and able to interpret the master's intentions so poignantly. This lady is one among them.

Wer mag jetzt noch behaupten, Bachs Musik sei "kostruiert" im Sinne von fehlender Emotionalität? Wundervoll gespielt. Danke!

She brings out every emotional nuance in the Prelude. Melancholy but hopeful both at once!

What a magnificent fugue - Bach was certainly the master of counterpoint, and Christine Schornsheim does an excellent job at capturing the piece. Cheers!

I just wanted to thank NBS for the amazing work they are doing and specially for creating one of the most smooth and peaceful places on YT where people with taste for Bach's music can unite and learn together. I can say for myself that I have learned a lot being here for the last months.

it's wonderfully majestic and what a talent with more the acoustics of a gymnasium which is not common so there is a lot of space to showcase this work very good instrument very good sound also congratulations Madam you bring back a lot of memories but it was at the very top at the high perched rood screen and not at the harpsichord Johann Sebastian Bach to this architecture and its own apogiaturee and it is precisely this construction in the fugue that I particularly like I wonder if the instrument would not date from the 17th century by chance again my congratulations to all these magnificent songs that we hear

The harpsichord is a Bruce Kennedy from 1989, after Michael Mietke - a 17th century harpsichord and harp maker on which instruments Bach used to play.

This prelude is so difficult to execute properly. The ornamentation requires real skill. Beautifully played.

And it the polyphony is so incredibly apparent in her playing... you can close your eyes and imagine that two people are playing on separate instruments. Bravo

This touched me at first listen. It's a great sight reading testament and not just that it gives you the emotion and respect to both the prelude and fugue which hope is coming through at the very end

The A-natural dissonance at 00:28 forms a minor-ninth with the bass, which in equal temperament is the harshest interval. But in well-tempered it sounds poignant. Chopin's favorite composer was Bach, and here in the prelude Bach sounds like Chopin.

Wonderful music, wonderful rendition! An unrelated question: why do some harpsichords have two keyboards?
@mensah-j
@mensah-j Жыл бұрын
On those instruments there are two sets of strings, one for each keyboard. They typically differ in timbre and can the two manuals may be coupled together or uncoupled for a change in volume. Historically, in the 16th century, the second manual was also used for transposition.
